The IT Ops Strategy: Lean IT Lean IT is the extension of Lean Production's concepts to IT services. The main areas of intervention are organization, processes and infrastructure. Regarding organization and processes, IT Service Management (ITSM) methodology through ITIL best practices and/or ISO/IEC 20000 helps to achieve the objectives. The aim is to “model” a new IT organization better aligned with the business and able to provide the services needed at the highest required quality, with a flexible approach to really become a strategic partner for the business. In the IT infrastructure management area virtualization and cloud computing allow energy costs' optimization (including those related to physical space and computer room's air conditioning) and management costs. Adopting Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions can also help reducing licensing and maintenance costs while decreasing complexity and risk for future upgrades, minimizing the impact on end users.

In a nutshell, a Lean IT approach can lead to a more effective and efficient IT organization able to speak business language with no technical jargon, becoming a real strategic partner for the business with measurable value-add, through provision of high quality and flexible IT services based on real and changing business needs, leading to a reduction of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to maintain competitiveness.
