ANNE ALEXANDERAncient Life
June 17 - July 11, 2009
Anne Alexander’s new work is based on her observations of and fasci-
nation with fossils, the ancient life forms through which she reflects upon the
nature of life and death. “Fossils connect us to our earth’s history – they have
been here for eons and will remain long after we are gone.” The artist has carved
these pieces in marble, in fired clay, and in various woods such as cedar, poplar,
and mahogany. The pieces are installed in the gallery space in such a way that
the viewer has an opportunity to be surrounded by the many shapes, inviting in-
teraction with the work so that the exhibit can be experienced through all of the
senses. During her year’s sabbatical from her teaching position at the Waynflete
School in Portland, Alexander made this work while at two residencies, one at
the Vermont Studio Center and the other at The Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts. She has shown widely throughout New England and has received a Ful-
bright Senior/Scholar Fellowship, a Pollack/Krasner Foundation Grant, and two
Good Idea Grants from the Maine Arts Commission. Her work has been shown
at the Caldbeck since 1995 in 7 solo exhibits.
