“Engagement refers to the extent to which employees believe in what they do, feel commitment toward the organization, and are willing to expend their best efforts to make the organization successful. Engagement is different than employee satisfaction because it has a behavioral component. Engagement means that employees are not just happy or satisfied, but are actively striving to make the organization more successful.” - Eric Vanetti, Ph.D.

Engagement Challenges
• Engagement levels decline as employees get older
• Minority ethnic respondents have higher engagement levels than their white colleagues
• Managers and professionals tend to have higher engagement levels than their colleagues in supporting roles
• Engagement levels decline as length of service increases
• Having an accident or injury at work, or experiencing harassment (particularly if the manager is the source of the harassment) both have a big negative impact on engagement
• Employees who have a personal development plan, and who have received a formal performance within the past year, have significantly higher engagement levels than those who have not

“As the Director of Food Services I have been amazed at the shift in attitude and pride that has taken place. Our kitchen managers feel valued as professionals. They feel empowered and prepared to handle the challenges and opportunities of our ever changing school meals environment. In my 28 years as a Food Service Director I have never been more proud than I am today of the opportunities these sessions have provided for leadership and personal growth to all of our Food Service Professionals.” Beth Glitt Food Service Supervisor South-Western City Schools
