Mexico City. Member of the National System of Researchers of Mexico and member of the
Mexican Academy of Sciences. She teaches Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine,
UNAM, and teaches in a workshop of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM and
professor of the postgraduate programs of Biomedical Sciences and Biological Sciences at
UNAM.
Field of expertise and research lines: a) Physiology and Biophysics; line of research:
Regulation of insulin and catecolamine secretion mediated by intercellular channels, b)
Science and Gender studies: Studies on policies in sciences with a gender perspective. In
both lines of research, she has been a pioneer.
Grades: Medical Surgeon degree by the Faculty of Medicine at UNAM, Master in Science
in Neuroscience and Ph.D in Biophysics and Physiology degrees by the Center for
Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN).
International experience: She participates in a foreign exchange program of the
Department of Biophysics at the University of Norwick, England, 1994. She also works at
the Institute of Diabetes, Intestinal and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health
of the United States of America (USA) (1996-1997) and the Department of Neuroscience
at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, NY, USA as a
postdoctoral (1997-1999). In the latter she has also been also professor (2000-2003).
Presently she is also a guest lecturer at New York Medical College, NY, NY-USA.
Publications: 53 publications, including research papers in international JCR refereed
journals (22) and in Latindex refeered journals (2) and chapters in international (5) and
national books (7), articles in proceedings (3), edited books (3) and outreach articles (11).
Titles of books co-edited: Women in exact and life Sciences in Latin American, 2009,
published by the Faculty of Medicine, UNAM and a book in printing process: Actions to
encourage and recognize the studies of science and Gender in Mexico, edited by the
Scientific and Technological Consultative Forum, 2016.
Directed theses and teaching experience: 15 theses directed: 3 of doctoral degree and 12
bachelor theses. Some of her students are already independent researchers. She has also
directed 88 undergraduate students´ research.
Grants obtained as principal investigator: 15, international (3) (NIDDK, NIH, NSF &
AAASc, USA; IBRO- Europe, DGAPA -MEXICO (7), CONACyT-MEXICO (5).
Courses: she has taught in 71 courses: undergraduate (36) and graduate (35) and a

Meetings and congress organized. She has organized 35 academic activities, including:
International congress (2), international symposiums (5), national symposia (19) a National
Forum (1) and international conferences (8) in the diabetes and in gender and science
fields.
Lectures dictated: Invited lectures (81) and papers presented at national and international
meetings and congresses (72).
Awards: Among them, a First Independent Research Award from the NIDDK, NIH, and an
International cooperation Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the
American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, AAASc, USA, an Award of basic
research, Pfizer Scientific Institute of Mexico, as well as an International Brain Research
organization teaching award, for organizing a scientific symposium. Member of the
Scientific Committee of the International Gap Junction Conference, 2015.
Generation of public policies: She has generated proposals that have resulted in legislative
changes, both in the prevention of diabetes as well as in the recognition of the gender
studies as a national science field. In the latter she is well known, for raising the first
proposal to incorporate the gender perspective in the Law of Science, Technology and
Innovation of Mexico, as well as for being the mainstream supporting leader of policies to
stimulate and recognize the research studies in gender and science by the local and
federal evaluation systems.
