Corus was formed by the merger,
in 1999, of British Steel and
Koninklijke Hoogovens. One of the
world's largest multi-metals
companies with a group turnover
of 15 billion Euros of which more
than 30% derives from the supply
of metal products, design and
fabrication services to the
construction industry.
Corus Building Systems
Corus Building Systems is a key
player in the construction sector
of Corus. Contained within the 25
Corus Building Systems companies
is the Systems Division where you
will find Kalzip - the worlds leading
standing seam system and more.
Kalzip is offered through a number
of host centres throughout Europe
and Asia to support the global
market.
Kalzip
Kalzip is widely recognised
as a roofing and cladding system
of the very highest quality offering
outstanding design potential,
performance and durability.
Transport facilities - airports,
train/coach stations, ferry terminals
- have specific and extremely
demanding requirements when
it comes to construction materials
and systems. No wonder then that
Kalzip is so frequently the preferred
specification for passenger
transport terminals right around
the world.

During the past 30 years over 60
million square metres of Kalzip has
been installed around the world - an
unbeatable track record of proven
high performance often in the most
demanding environments. Indeed
there are now a substantial numberof roofs that are entering their
fourth decade of maintenance-free,
leak-free life and, still looking good!
Kalzips famous longevity is due to:
Material
Aluminium is a chemically inert corrosion resistant
metal. Kalzip is roll-formed from a unique aluminium
alloy combination which has great strength and
outstanding durability. The sheet is protected on both
sides by a special alloy plating which provides the
surface with effective anodic protection. Tests
conducted over 25 years in extreme conditions of acid
rain, industrial emissions, and coastal aggression show
the layer to be still protecting the aluminium core.
Technology
The zip technology which closes and secures the
standing seams is totally non-penetrative - no holes
means no leaks. At the same time the seam allows the
roof to 'breathe' so that any moisture occurring withinthe roof evaporates away. This means that the entire
configuration of the roof remains in good condition
throughout its life.
Installation
The company has always invested heavily in training.
Only fully trained and recommended contractors are
allowed to install Kalzip. Thus, poor standards of
installation can never compromise the long-term
integrity of the system.

Outstanding durability however is not the sole reason
for Kalzips global success. A culture of continuoussystem development and innovation has given Kalzip
a unique design flexibility allowing it to push at the
boundaries of form and function. This capacity has
resulted in some of the most amazing roofscapes in
modern architecture. Working with the architect and
project team from the earliest design stages, a technical
team with a level of experience and expertise that is
second to none, tests and proves the buildability of any
challenging design before it leaves the drawing board.
Where necessary, a scale model or even a full size
prototype roof section or design detail will be
constructed and later used for installer project
induction/training.
So, no wonder that architects the world over have come
to know Kalzip as their flexible friend with boundlessand exciting design potential underpinned by proven
performance and durability.

Passenger transport facilities,
whether for air, rail, road or sea,
have much in common
architecturally. An easily accessible,
conveniently located large building
is required to accommodate the
reception, processing and
embarkation of passengers and theirbaggage. The building must be
designed for efficient throughput
yet, still offer a pleasant and relaxed
environment for (often stressed)
travellers. They must have the time
and inclination to shop - the
profitability of the entire operation
often hinges on retail sales within
the terminal.
Terminals are designed to insulate
passengers from the noise and
pollution associated with busy
transport facilities and it follows that
the chosen construction materials
often have to contend with
extremely aggressive external
environments. City centre trainstations - exposed and wind swept
airports - coastal ferry ports -
congested coach/rail interchanges.
It is in locations such as these that
Kalzips durability is invaluable and,
furthermore, continuous system
development has led to the
introduction of a variant that will not
merely resist but also significantly
improve the surrounding
environment: the Kalzip Nature
Roof, a low maintenance, self
sustaining green roofing system.
No wonder then that Kalzip is the
preferred choice for major
passenger facilities right around
the world.
With Kalzip, its amazing how far transportarchitecture can travel.

Covered
All developed countries are now actively working
towards the creation of fully integrated transport
infrastructures in a bid to improve travel times, contain
road traffic congestion and pollution problems. The
preferred approach is to set up a carefully integrated
system at the outset - all new airports are designed
to incorporate train/tube and road transport facilities.
These multiple interchanges lead naturally to ever more
complex architectural concepts and this is where
Kalzips legendary flexibility comes to the fore!

New life
Throughout Europe central city stations are by and
large the original nineteenth century structures - the
original passenger terminals. Many are beautiful
structures, acclaimed in the heyday of steam railway as
the cathedrals of travel. But, after well over a century
of intensive use, often the exterior fabric is in need of
repair. Kalzip is used extensively for refurbishment
where its unique combination of lightness and strength
has proved ideal for re-roofing, in combination with
glass. The further significant benefit of Kalzip in such
applications is its minimal maintenance requirements.
And, of course, being aluminium, Kalzip is resistant
to the corrosive environment which can develop with
high concentrations of airborne dirt, brake dust and
exhaust fumes.

Costing in excess of 3.2 billion, Londons
new Jubilee Line was described as the UKs
last great public project of the twentieth
century. Without exception its stations are
visually exciting and have been acclaimed
as architectural triumphs - North Greenwich,
in particular has received numerous accolades
and awards.
Once more, Kalzip featured prominently - at
Canada Water, Stratford Station and at North
Greenwich where the aerofoil shaped roof
provides an effective canopy for tube and
bus passengers.

Durable
Kalzip. Equally at home by the sea.
Few environments have a more aggressive effect on
building materials than the marine environment - theeffects of sea spray, sand scouring and intensive UV
light combine to reduce the performance life of all but
the most durable of materials and their coatings.
Conditions around coastlines can be particularly severe
with strong prevailing winds and exposure.
Ferry connections for passengers and freight all require
terminal buildings and with the constant upgrading offerry services these are now offering the facilities that
travellers have become accustomed to in other modes
of transport. For many of these new structures, Kalzip,
with its well proven resistance to the rigours of the
marine environment, has been the obvious choice.
