The art of beautiful aluminium roofs and façades

There are many ways of expressing the aesthetics of finishes and colours in architecture. The visual perception changes with the incidence of light – as the time of day, the play between light and shade and the seasons change. Moisture, rain, frost and light set the structure in scene and make shapes and moods experienceable.

Therefore finishes and colours rank among the strongest means of expression in architecture. They convey the

identity and individuality of their users; they create distinc-tiveness. In combination with aluminium they shape the appearance of modern buildings in an impressive manner and create corporate architecture and design.

Kalzip roof and façade systems are a special instrument with which classic and refined styles of architecture can be materialised. They are able to give form to modern architecture like no other building material can.

Kalzip AluPlusZinc is a traditionally refined, technically sophisticated pro-duct with a matt, zinc-patinated finish. An active surface typical of zinc reveals itself to the viewer. Kalzip AluPlusZinc was developed for planners and archi-tects who are looking for something special and demand the best, in order to realise unique roofs and façades.

In accordance with strict quality stan-dards, a sophisticated product with a matt, zinc-patinated surface is manu-factured using a patented process. The timeless, aesthetic radiance of the pre-weathered zinc patina opens up a broad field of applications. Kalzip AluPlusZinc convinces uncompromisingly, in particu-lar in prestigious buildings, where inte-gration, high-quality aesthetics and harmonious design are the basis of the

overall concept. As if it were “alive”, the patination continues to develop due to external influences and always remains impressive.

The characteristics of Kalzip AluPlusZinc:• Zinc patina applied using the PEGAL

process • The salt water-resistant aluminium

core retains its outstanding properties even after the synthesis with zinc

• The weather-related rate of corrosion is significantly lower than conventional zinc

• Discreet appearance and uniformity of colour over the entire surface

• UV-resistant

Kalzip profiled sheets are available in a classic stucco-embossed natural alu-minium finish with a protective plating and non-colour coating, as well as in an AluPlusPatina version. This natural metallic finish is achieved by means of treatment with additional embossing rollers.

They have extraordinary characteristics – the extremely robust surface struc-ture is resistant to the slight mechanical damage that can occur, for example, during the installation of the profiled sheets. The diffuse reflection of the sur -face reduces glare. Thanks to its discreet metallic look, the material is very well suited for the design of larger roof and façade surfaces. In the case of natural aluminium it has an even surface

greying, while the AluPlusPatina, depen -ding upon the colouring, exhibits a con -sistent weathering behaviour and is resistant to salt water and weathering as well as aggressive environmental influences.

The characteristics of a stucco-embossed Kalzip finish:• Extremely weather-resistant and

robust surface • Ideal for building envelopes that

merge into the façade• Available alternatively in natural

aluminium or in pre-weathered AluPlusPatina in various colourings

• Reduced glare due to diffuse light reflections

Matt and refined – the special Kalzip AluPlusPatina finish

In a further development of the existing AluPlusPatina finish for roof and façade systems, Kalzip now offers the planner and architect new, subtly refined colourings in gold and bronze. The new metallic AluPlusPatina finishes are available in four colourings, from light gold (champagne) to dark bronze.

A special surface treatment significantly reduces the diffuse light reflection and corresponds in its characteristic to a sur-face that has been exposed to the weather for many years. The colourings are produced in a layer of thickness 5 µm by means of electrolytic passivation and are offered for both stucco-embossed and smooth rolled aluminium strips. The thickness of the passivated coating remains unchanged over the course of the years in relation to the original thickness and thus ensures a long service life.

The new AluPlusPatina finishes are available as standard for all Kalzip overall widths as well as for the new Kalzip FC façade system. This up-to-date interpretation option creates space for more individuality in a sophisticated, refined look.

The characteristics of Kalzip AluPlusPatina:• Extremely weather-resistant and robust surface • Ideal for building envelopes that merge into the façade• Available alternatively in natural aluminium or in

pre-weathered AluPlusPatina in various colourings• Reduced glare due to diffuse light reflections• Fingerprint resistant• Available in stucco-embossed or smooth finish• UV-resistant• No need for additional paint coating

Kalzip colours – limitless varietyModern building technology makes the highest demands on the resistance of the materials employed to weathering and corrosion. Coloured Kalzip aluminium profiled sheets are the result of state-of-the-art surface refinement technologies.

Consistent colour qualityThe aluminium strips, which are coated using the coil-coating process, undergo a large number of elaborate work steps. Depending on the type of coating, they undergo different pre-treatment processes and are finished in the colour requested or sealed with a clear varnish. Aluminium strips with a single-sided coating are provided with a protective coat of varnish on the rear side. Only high-quality stove enamels which have a polyester, PVDF or CFTE base are used in order to achieve a weather-resistant and colourfast coating.

The coil coating process is monitored in accordance with the standards of the ECCA (European Coil Coating Association). Important criteria here are: colour tone, degree of shine, thick-ness of varnish, hardness of varnish, adhesion of varnish and malleability. Long-duration tests such as acid salt spray tests, QUV B tests, condensation tests in an SO

2-saturated atmo-

sphere and outdoor exposure tests in aggressive environ-ments are also carried out.

Kalzip profiled sheets with polyester coatingThe coating is robust and resistant to scratches; it has very good forming characteristics and good resistance to weathe-ring and UV light. Kalzip profiled sheets in a polyester execu-tion are mainly used in locations with normal environmental influences.

Kalzip profiled sheets with PVDF coatingThis coating is particularly good for aggressive environments and extreme climatic conditions, e.g. near to salt water. Pro-filed sheets in PVDF quality are characterised by outstanding UV-resistance, have very good forming characteristics and are used primarily for façade design.

Kalzip ProTect coatingFor the protection of the surfaces, Kalzip additionally offers a high-quality and extraordinarily weather-resistant high-end special coating on the basis of a polymer technology using fluorocarbon (FLP). It is characterised by extremely high resistance to scratching, optimum stability of colour tone and shine and a considerably higher surface hardness and temperature resistance.

Characteristics of the ProTect coating:• Available for RAL, NCS and metallic colours• Outstanding long-term characteristics with very low

chalking tendency• Very good resistance to dirt due to a Teflon-like behaviour,

resulting in a lower cleaning requirement• Resistant to chemicals, even to aggressive emissions such

as aircraft exhaust gases• Due to the FLP technology and an additional coat of

clear varnish, an “AntiGraffiti effect” is achieved that offers effective protection against vandalism

• Also available in high gloss finishes • Conforms to the examination conditions of the Florida test (Outdoor exposure for over 20 years)

Due to the limitations of printing technology, all of the finishes and colours shown are intended only to give an indication of the actual appearance. Differences in colour in AluPlusZinc are typical of zinc and, as with all me -tallic surfaces, are desirable. Kalzip AluPlusPatina strips are inspected for uniformity of colour and finish in accordance with our company standard and our stringent quality assurance processes. Nevertheless, discoloura-tions may occur near to the edges due to the primary hot-rolling production process; these discolourations may be visible through the translucent passi-vation layer. These discolourations are to be tolerated in accordance with DIN/BS EN 485-1 and do not represent defects. All colour tones shown are based on a polyester coating. Due to the production process, slight devia-

tions from the RAL colour code may occur. Minor production-related diffe-rences in colour may also occur within a single delivery. The differences in colour should be tolerated and do not represent a defect. The effect of metallic colours/RAL 9006/9007 cannot be represented due to limitations of printing technology. In the case of international orders, material quantities must be determined precisely in order to avoid increased costs incurred as a result of materials with an excessive or inadequate coating. The flat sheets required for flashings are cut to length from the coils. The thickness and strength of the material are thus identical to those of the Kalzip pro-ducts ordered. Standard colours are available at short notice – for availabi-lity, please refer to the overview of delivery times for finishes and colours.
