ANAPHYLACTIC ALERT
There are several children in our school with severe
life-threatening food allergies (called anaphylaxis).
This is a medical condition that causes a severe
reaction to specific foods or other materials and can
result in death within minutes. Although peanuts
and peanut products are
the most common foods to
c a u s e a n a p h y l a x i s ,
shellfish, fish, eggs,
sulphites, milk, sesame
seeds, tea tree oil, soy or
any other food can cause
this dangerous condition.
This year, we also have a child with a serious
allergy to tea tree oil.
Although this may or may not affect your child’s
class directly, we want to inform you so that you
may choose to send foods to school with your child
that are free from nuts and nut products.
If your child has health problems of any kind, please
inform your child’s teacher or office staff
immediately so that the necessary health protection
steps may be taken. Thank you for your
understanding and co-operation in ensuring the
safest environment for our students!

to provide good care for your child(ren). Please call
or visit the school office if you have any new
information to share.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS...
FOREST MANOR ECO-CLASSROOM AUDIT For the last two weeks, we have been going into each
classroom around the school. We have been
inside each classroom to check how class-
rooms have been contributing to help the
earth. We have been checking to see if stu-
dents have used garbage bins and recycling
bins correctly, and also if lights are turned
off when not in use. We will give classes results with feed-
back from the audit. Then we will do another audit in the
New Year to see if we have improved.

“EMPATHY” ASSEMBLY On Friday, November 28th, Forest Manor students,
staff, and parents enjoyed our monthly Character
Education assembly about the character trait
“Empathy”.
Many parents were on hand to see their child
receive a Character Education certificate for
demonstrating positive behaviour at school. Grade
6 classes presented a poem about “Empathy”, then
Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Kaell led the school in
singing our School Song.
With this assembly, we reinforced our commitment
to providing a safe, nurturing and inclusive
environment.
BLOGGING ABOUT EMPATHY… - from Mr. Kanellos’s class
Shruthi—November 24, 2014 at 8:02 AM
When I got badly hurt my friend helped me up and
took me to my mom and dad. I realised empathy is
not about just showing kindness, but it is about
understanding how the other person is feeling in his
his or her heart.
Sachit — November 24, 2014 at 5:01 PM
Three people in our class, Aeden, Apoorva, and
Wesley, showed empathy recently. When I was
playing soccer, I got tackled and my leg was hurt—
but Apoorva, Wesley and Aeden came to help me.
They asked me how I was doing.
Ayesha—November 24, 2014 at 6:18 PM
When I feel sad or I am alone my friends came and
talk with me, and they also tell jokes
to make me laugh and to make me feel better.
Apoorva—December 2, 2014 at 10:06 PM
Empathy means to me, putting yourself in other
people’s shoes. For example, when my ball went
onto the roof, Sachit, Hussain and Eaden
empathised and helped me solve my problem.

WELL DONE, FOREST MANOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KINDERGARTEN... “Our new Light Table in Room 154”
Inspired by our time spent playing with flashlights dur-
ing the power outage at the end of November, the Kin-
dergarten students of Room 154 created our very own
light table. We used materials we had in our classroom
part of an old lamp, a large Rubbermaid container, some
plasticine and some parchment paper.
It has been really fun using it in both Math and Lan-
guage activities and during “free choice” time. The sand
is great for writing and drawing in, and the plasticine
helps keep it on the table so we don’t make too much of
a mess.
GRADE 1’S...
GRADE 4-6 SCIENCE STUDIES… Pictured below is an engaging, hands-on activity to help
students understand soil erosion and threshold friction
velocity. What will Mrs. Wichert come up with next??!!
ROAMING THE ROOMS...CLASSROOM UPDATES
GRADE 2’S... Recently, we went to
Ryerson Theatre to see
plays based on Robert
Munsch’s books. The
plays were very funny
and we laughed a lot.
There was singing and
dancing. My favourite
play was Lighthouse.
We also walked along
the Distillery District
and saw a big Christmas
tree decorated with
many ornaments and a
snowman. Mrs. McConnell took a picture of us standing
in front of it. Everything was decorated.

GRADE 5’S… A number of classes are getting ready for The Hour of
Code. For more info: http://canadalearnscoding.com/
and http://Code.org/
What is the Hour of Code? It is a one-hour activity. Stu-
dents of all ages can choose from a variety of self-guided
tutorials, from kindergarten and up. Tutorials work on
any modern browser, tablet, smartphone, or even with no
computer at all. Code.org’s own tutorial features Angry
Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and video lectures from Mark
Zuckerberg and Bill Gates.
The Grade 1’s continue to make connections with texts to
form art works involving various lines. As well, the story-
book, “Where the wild things are”, provided an opportunity
for writing.
ROAMING THE CLASSROOMS...
GRADE 3’S... The students in Ms. Weiner's Lan-
guage group decided that they
"mustache" (must ask) staff important
ques t ions . Come and see
the mustached Grade 3's and their
questions on the bulletin board outside room 121.
Feel free to ask them a question too!
GRADE 4’S... In Ms. Shulman's Grade 4 class we learned how to
describe the weather in French. To demonstrate our
understanding we made iMovie videos. We drew
posters of all the different weather statements we
learned. Then, we took pictures of our posters using
the iPad. We uploaded our photos onto iMovie and
recorded our voices over the pictures. We will be
sharing our videos on the Smarboard soon!

In Social Studies, we learned about the different
physical regions of Canada. We researched all their
different physical features. For example, we learned
about vegetation, hills, mountains, water bodies, and
much more. We chose one region we studied and
created a landscape drawing of the region using Kid-
Pix on the computer.

GRADE 3’S... "Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think!"(Dr. Seuss) The grade 3's in Mrs. Surgenor's class have been exploring
inquiry based learning with the support of the website,
"Wonderopolis.com." Students have been generating
AMAZING questions based on their own unique interests
about the world around them. With the creation of a
"Wonder Wall" in the classroom, students embarked on an
exciting journey towards discovering answers to their ques-
tions using research based inquiry. Many skills have been
explored, such as how to effectively navigate the TDSB
virtual library, how to identify useful sources of informa-
tion, and how to record research responsibly, just to name a
few! Amazing learning, sharing and questioning about the
world around us has taken place. An environment that pro-
motes and inspires discovery and inquiry has evolved in
our classroom. We will continue this exciting journey as
we explore further questions and share our new learning
and discoveries with others. Check out Wonderopolis.com
at home to begin your own journey into inquiry based
learning!

PARENT COUNCIL UPDATE This year, the he Parent Council has organized pizza
lunches and movie nights, and the proceeds have been used
for Scientist in Classroom programs, extra-curricular clubs
and teams, trips, Arts performances, literacy kits and pro-
grams. But, we still need to add important digital tools to
help your child learn, such as laptops, tablets and Interac-
tive White Boards (IWB’s) - these items are very important
to engage your child in learning. We are in the 21st Cen-
tury, after all! Many thanks to efforts of the Parent Council
and to the Forest Manor community for your support.
Of course, without more parent involvement, the Parent
Council will not function, and Forest Manor needs your
help—even if it’s for an hour a week or one hour per
month! There are various committees to become involved
with, depending on your availability and interest.
For more information about the School/Parent Council,
please contact Ellahe Tamaddon, key School Council Ex-
ecutive representative @ [email protected]
The new Chairperson for the Spring Fair Committee is
Margaret Yeung. Chairpersons for the Movie Night Com-
mittee are Alifia and Lubna, but we’re still looking for a
Chairperson for the Pizza Lunch Committee.
Our next School/Parent Council meeting scheduled is:
Wednesday, January @ 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Child minding
and light refreshments are available. Please join us!
Topics include: Parking Lot Safety, Spring Fair, School
Dress Code/Uniforms, and Committee Updates.
Pictured above: The hard working and dedicated Movie Night
Committee poses before the recent showing of the Pirate Fairy
Tale. Another well-organized, and fun event for Forest Manor!
REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLIES On November 11th, Forest Manor school
hosted 2 assemblies to recognize Remem-
brance Day, and to promote peace within and
outside the school. Parents watched various
classes sing songs, perform dramatizations,
and recite poems as part of the assemblies. The assemblies
were organized by Mrs. Lauretti-Martin and Mrs. Damiano.
Pictured to the right is one of many pieces of art work on dis-
play and a poem by Niki about “peace”.
