Message to Members Atlonglast,worktoputtheCourtyardneighborhooddirectoryonourwebsitehasbeencompleted.Whatbeganasaprojecttosimplyupdateandrepublishthehardcopydirectory,changedinresponseto considerations about theusefulness ofhaving adirectory thatcouldeasilybekeptcurrentwithnopublishingcostsorneedtosellads.Thismonth,youshouldbeabletoaccessthelatestdirectoryinformationthroughthepasswordprotected“Directory”pageonourwebsite:www.courtyardhoa.org.Formoreinformationaboutthenewdirectory,pleasereadthearticleinthismonth’snewsletter. Takenote -- itwas reported thatduringaoneweekperiod inApril, twenty-five(25)burglarieswere reported in the78731zipcode. Thankfully, none of those took place in the Courtyard.However,again,weurgeyoutopleasekeepaneyeoutforanythingoranyonewholookssuspicious. Whenaneighborisawayfromhome,helpeachotheroutbypickingupnewspapers,mail,ortrashcontainerssittingoutbythemselvesthatindicatenooneishomeatthatresidence.Ifyouleavevehiclesparkedoutsideyourgarage,donotleaveanythingofvalueinplainsight. Althougheveyoneprobablyknowsthis,withrareexception,FridayisthedaythatgarbageiscollectedintheCourtyardneighborhood.Thereisoneminor“wrinkle”inthisscheduleforrecycledmaterials.Trashinthegrey,tanordarkgreencontainersispickedupeveryFriday, but the blue recycling containers are emptied EVERYOTHERFriday.Whenitpassedoutthebluecontainerslastfall,theCityofAustinincludedacalendarofscheduledcollectiondaysforrecycledtrash.TheCourtyardCallerandourwebsitealsonotewhenthosedaysareeachmonth.Saveyourselfthetroubleofhaulingyourunemptiedbluecontaineroutandtheninfromthecurbbytakingamomenttoconsiderwhether it isoneofthealternatingFridaysforbluecontainercollection. EffectiveFebruary23,2009,theCityofAustin(City)adoptedanordinancerelatedtotheintentionalfeedingofdeer.Thenewordinance amends the City Code to addChapter10-8to:

• ProhibittheintentionalfeedingofdeerwithinCitylimits;

• InstructstheCityManagertocreateacommunityeducationprogram;and

• Establishesafineofnotlessthan$75ormorethan$125forviolations.

TheOrdinancedoesnot:• Prevent deer from entering developed

suburbanareas;• Reduce the deer population in areas

currentlyexperiencingproblems;or• Preventdeerfromforagingonlandscape

amenities,e.g.,trees,grasses,shrubs.

Texascavesareconsidered“wild” and are exploredmainly by expert cavers,geologists and biologists,seven of these caves areconsidered “show” caves,or caves that have been

developedenoughtobeenjoyedbythegeneralpublic.NaturalBridgeCaverns,locatednorthofSanAntonio,isthelargestcommercial cave inTexas, and full of draperies, curtains,stalagmites, and stalactites. Cascade Caverns in Boerne,otherwiseknownas the“Peep in theDeep”,hasa90-footwaterfallwhenconditionsarewet.WonderWorldCaveinSanMarcosistheoldestcommercialcaveinTexas,whereyoucanfindceilingsfulloffossilsanddirectlyviewthewatersoftheEdwardsaquiferaswellastheundersideoftheBalconesfaultline.LonghornCavernsinBurnetwasusedforshelterbytheComancheIndiansandforworshipbyalocalchurch,andhaslargecalcitecrystalsfillingitswalls.InnerSpaceCavernsinGeorgetownfeaturessodastrawceilingsandanundergroundtheaterforeducationalprograms.TheCavernsofSonora,ashortdrivefromSonora,wasdesignatedaNationalNaturalLandmarkin1966,andisoneofthemostactivecavesintheworld,withover95%of its formationsstillgrowing. intothecaveatmosphere,causingthewatertobecomelessacidic,andthecalciumcarbonatedissolvedinitbeginstoformtinycrystalsorprecipitate.Individualcrystalsbuildupononeanother,andasteadydripfromacaveceilingcancreateawidevarietyofcaveformations.Therearedownward-buildingstalactites,upward-growingstalagmites,andifthetwogrowtogethertheycanformacolumn.Ribbonsofstonecandevelopintoshapesresemblingdraperies,curtains,sodastraws,coral,pearls,andevenstripsofbacon!Theunusualandever-changingenvironmentofacavewithits

constantdarkness,temperature,andrelativehumiditycreatesuniqueandinterestinginhabitants.Scientistsbelievethatmanyarerelicspecies, isolatedpopulationsthatwerelefttofollowtheirownevolutionarypath.Thosespeciestrulyadaptedtocaveshavereducedeyes&pigment,slenderbodies,andextralonglegs,whichallowstheanimaltospreaditselfoveralargersurfaceareainsuchafood-poorenvironment.TheseextremeadaptationscanbeseeninmanyofcentralTexas’threatenedandendangeredspeciessuchascavesalamanders,beetles,
