EffectiveFebruary23,2009,theCityofAustin(City)adoptedanordinancerelatedtotheintentionalfeedingofdeer.Thenewordinance amends the City Code to addChapter10-8to:

• ProhibittheintentionalfeedingofdeerwithinCitylimits;

• InstructstheCityManagertocreateacommunityeducationprogram;and

• Establishesafineofnotlessthan$75ormorethan$125forviolations.

TheOrdinancedoesnot:• Prevent deer from entering developed

suburbanareas;• Reduce the deer population in areas

currentlyexperiencingproblems;or• Preventdeerfromforagingonlandscape

amenities,e.g.,trees,grasses,shrubs.

Caverns & CavesMillionsofyearsago,the

great seas that stoodoverTexasdepositedthemakingsofthicklayersoflimestone.Asthelandroseandtheseasfell,eonsofrainfallleachedouthollows,deeppits,andundergroundstreambeds,andovertime,thesedeeplyhiddenworldsbuiltasilentbeauty. Today, Texas isriddled with over threethousandknowncavesandsinkholes,mostofthemintheEdwardsPlateauregionofcentralTexas.The most important

factorincaveformationisthepresenceofcarbondioxideinwater,themainsourceofwhichisfoundinthesoil.Rainsformaweakcarbonicacidthatdrivestheprogressiveprocessofdissolution,aprocessthatismorecommoninlimestonethaninanyothertypeofrock.Fracturesinthelimestoneallowthisweakacidicwater tofillvoids in the rock,andasthewaterfloweventuallydecreasesandthewatertablerecedes,cavesmaybecomedryorpartiallydry.Someofthecarbondioxidethatwasinthewaterisreleased

intothecaveatmosphere,causingthewatertobecomelessacidic,andthecalciumcarbonatedissolvedinitbeginstoformtinycrystalsorprecipitate.Individualcrystalsbuildupononeanother,andasteadydripfromacaveceilingcancreateawidevarietyofcaveformations.Therearedownward-buildingstalactites,upward-growingstalagmites,andifthetwogrowtogethertheycanformacolumn.Ribbonsofstonecandevelopintoshapesresemblingdraperies,curtains,sodastraws,coral,pearls,andevenstripsofbacon!Theunusualandever-changingenvironmentofacavewithits

constantdarkness,temperature,andrelativehumiditycreatesuniqueandinterestinginhabitants.Scientistsbelievethatmanyarerelicspecies, isolatedpopulationsthatwerelefttofollowtheirownevolutionarypath.Thosespeciestrulyadaptedtocaveshavereducedeyes&pigment,slenderbodies,andextralonglegs,whichallowstheanimaltospreaditselfoveralargersurfaceareainsuchafood-poorenvironment.TheseextremeadaptationscanbeseeninmanyofcentralTexas’threatenedandendangeredspeciessuchascavesalamanders,beetles,
