CHALLENGEWhilst being acknowledged as one of the greatest football clubs in the world, JuventusF.C. is also a billion dollar business with all the complexity of managing any commercialorganisation of this size. It retains vast amounts of sensitive data relating to itsprofessional players, collecting, synthesizing and analysing a huge range and volume ofdata around training, nutrition, performance and tactics to gain a competitive sportingadvantage.

It also holds significant volumes of corporate information relating to players contracts,sponsorships, partnerships, supporters information, credit card data etc.. Off the field ithas diversified interests including hotels, healthcare, merchandising, ticketing, etc., thatalso generate large volumes of sensitive data, which can be leveraged and monetized bycyber criminals.

A breach due to Inadequate security measures would have huge implications for Juventus,their customers, partners and employees. The rapid increase in cyber-attacks is evidenton a daily basis with traditional IT security products that focus on network perimeterdefences being bypassed at an alarming rate.

CYBER & SPORTS ORGANISATIONSA July 2020 report by the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, "The Cyber Threat to SportsOrganisations" found that the cyber threat to the UK sports sector was significant.

At least 70% of the sports organisations it surveyed had experienced at least one cyberincident or harmful cyber activity. This compares to 32% across general UK business,according to the DCMS annual breaches survey.

Around 30% of incidents resulted in direct financial damage to the victims, with costsvarying considerably from under £500 through to over £100,000 per incident. The averagecost was more than £10,000 per incident.

Beyond direct financial costs, 41% of breaches or attacks resulted in new measures beingput in place to prevent further incidents.

THREATSThe UK's National Cyber SecurityCentre's report has identifiedkey threats to sportsorganisations:

Business EmailCompromise (BEC) is the biggestcyber threat. Attackers seek togain access to official businessemail addresses, which theythen use to engineer such thingsas fraudulent payments or datatheft.

Cyber-enabled fraud includesmandate fraud, CEO fraud,conveyancing fraud and invoicefraud. Across UK business, £2.3billion was reportedly lost topayment diversion fraud alone,in 2018/19. 75% of sportsorganisations have receivedfraudulent emails, textmessages or phone calls.

Ransomware is a type ofmalware that prevents you fromaccessing your computer (ordata that is stored on yourcomputer). Whilst ransomwareis less common than BEC andcyber-enabled fraud, thebusiness impact of ransomwareattacks can be disastrous.Approximately 40% of attackson sports organisations involvedmalware. A quarter of theseinvolved ransomware.
