The Jeff Harwin Volunteer Award
This year, CBI presented a
new award for volunteerism
at Camp Daisy and Harry
Stein – The Jeff Harwin
Volunteer Award. Jeff’s love,
dedication, time and
devotion to the betterment
of camp made it a natural
choice to offer an annual
award in his honor. Needless
to say, it was an obvious
choice to present Jeff himself as the first recipient of
this prestigious award as Jeff exemplifies all of this
and more since the beginning of his involvement in
1975.

A Message from our President, CBI Board of Directors, Gail Baer
Presented Rosh Hashanah, September 14, 2015
Shana Tovah to you all.
October 28, 2005. That was the first time I walked into Congregation Beth Israel. I remember that day because it marked a major life transition. Our family was moving to the Valley in a few short months, and I made an advance trip looking for a synagogue. This was not an easy move for us. We were leaving a wonderful community and family in Washington, DC, where we had many deep roots, and decades of long-standing friendships. On October 28, 2005, I knew two people in Arizona. One was my cousin in Tucson. The other was a realtor. And while I was putting on my good game face for my family, I was struggling. I had already done one round of shul shopping a few weeks prior, but nothing clicked. As the U2 song goes, I thought, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”
On Shabbat evening October 28, 2005, I walked into our Sanctuary, grabbed a siddur, and sat down by myself, alone. And I felt by myself, alone… but not for very long. A couple a few seats away from me said “hello, Shabbat Shalom.” That “hello” changed my life forever. Harriet Kriegsfeld and her husband Steve, of blessed memory, asked me to sit with them. We chatted and I felt like these two wonderful people gave me the emotional hug I so desperately needed. I stayed and met more folks after services, and my outlook on our transition to Arizona turned around. I enjoyed that night so immensely; I decided to come back the next day for Shabbat morning. While the morning service and bar mitzvah was beyond beautiful, what I realized was that it was the people, all of you that make our community so very special.
That’s when I learned that every hello matters. I don’t think we were here even two weeks, and our son was invited to a Bar Mitzvah – not just him, our whole family. Your children reached out to our children. And we all became involved in each other’s lives.
Turns out, what I thought I was looking for and what I found were completely different. I came looking for a synagogue. What I found was a home, and a family that strengthened our family. Our holy community, our kehilah kedosha, gave us friends. We’ve laughed together, and we’ve cried together. The essence of these beautiful relationships helped me to understand Torah, and how to use its teachings to enhance my everyday life. These relationships deepened my relationship with the State of Israel, and propelled our family to make four visits to Israel over the last ten years, including, of course, the Camp Stein Big Trip. The greatest thing I found was that for the first time in my adult life, I started to build a relationship with God like I never had before. This all began from my relationships with many of you. That’s because of the neshama, the Jewish soul of our congregational family.
I share this with very personal story because for 10 years, I struggled with how to appropriately thank Harriet and Steve for saying hello to me that one Shabbat evening. A thank-you note did not seem nearly enough. I finally concluded that the best way to thank them is to share this publically with all of you because I know (because I’ve been there) that there are many among us that need a hello. Some are here with us today. Many are not with us today. It’s so easy. We need to say hello more - a lot more. It’s our obligation.
People that visit Congregation Beth Israel often say they feel a sense of warmth, something that they can’t put into words when they walk into our place. The answer is actually very simple, and I felt it the first time I walked into our Sanctuary with that hello I so desperately needed. What I felt (from all of you) was God. I found God in an authentic way like I had never before – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The Jewish philosopher Martin Buber said it best, “God is found in relationships.”
Now, a decade has passed, and we are facing another life transition. Two weeks ago, we dropped off our youngest child, Amy, at college. And although it marked our third time through this exercise, it does not get easier; especially this time.
This year marks the first Rosh Hashanah ever that we are not together with my parents, my in-laws or any of our children. We are scattered. It’s hard. Pieces of my heart are spread across our great country. As Michael and I transition to our empty nest, our house is strangely quiet. But unlike my trepidation and uneasiness 10 years ago, I do know that this life change it is going to be just fine.
It gives me great comfort that a bit of all of you is with all of our kids. Right above her dorm room bed, Amy hung a small scroll she received from CBI’s Ma’ayan graduation this past spring. The words on that scroll are appropriate for her transition to college, but for all of us as we transition to a New Year, “Baruch ata b’voecha u’varech ata b’tzetecha.” Blessed are you in your comings, and blessed are you in your goings.
My family, Michael, David, Rachel and Amy and the entire Board of Directors all join me in wishing all of you a sweet year; a year of health, happiness, peace and security for Israel, our Jewish homeland. May you all be blessed in your comings, and may you all be blessed in your goings.
As we shift to new chapters in all of our lives, as we celebrate Rosh Hashanah and transition to a New Year, remember to make all of your hellos count: your hellos to your family, your hellos to your community, and your hellos to God.
Shana Tovah,

Sukkotfest The annual Temple celebration featured the Sukkot blessings while waving the lulav and sniffing the fragrant etrog, the beautiful voices of Zimriyah, our Junior Choir, and fun for the kids with arts and crafts under the stars in our sukkah!
As we begin the year 5776, we extend our deepest gratitude to the members of Congregation Beth Israel’s Maimonides Society.
With these exceptional gifts of Tzedakah from those “whose hearts so moves them” we are able to bring the Jewish children and adults closer to
God, Torah and the sacred work of building a holy Jewish community.

High Holy Day Parallel Youth Services - What a success!
Led by our team Stacy Rosenthal, Religious School Director,
Taylor Poslosky, Youth Engagement Director, Brian Mitchell,
Camp Stein Director and Assistant Camp Stein Director, Maryn
Gordon we had over 70 children at each service ranging in age
from four to eight years old at this year’s Parallel Youth
Services!
Needless to say, while parents were attending our adult
services, our pre-kindergarten through third graders had fun in
meaningful and interactive worship, participated in holiday
activities and crafts to under understand the holidays and why
we observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This full Torah
service was led this year by our Beth Israel Temple Youth (BITY)
high school students who volunteered and worked hard
preparing and leading all our students in song and prayer.
BITY & HIGH HOLY DAYS 2015 | 5776 Our BITY – Beth Israel Temple Youth group took part in High Holy Day services. Whether it was
leading the Kindergarten thru 3rd
Grade Service or loading up donated items from our generous
congregants for the Interfaith Cooperative Ministries food/hygiene drive…we kept them busy!
ICM Food & Clothing Bank meets the basic needs of up to 150 families every day, six days a week. This year, with your support CBI collected 9200 pounds of items - a significant increase over last year! ICM relies on CBI for 60% of its annual food donations. Thank you for making such a difference!
At this time, ICM is looking for donations of bedding and linens. Even one blanket will make a difference! Donation bins at CBI.
