and they su ered institutional discrimination. They channeled their grievances into educating their children, hard work, and building their Jewish institutions - and oh how they built!

In 1922 they built the Jewish Center on E. 105th Street in Cleveland in the heart of the Russian Jewish community. After World War II and the slaughter of European Jewry, they built Park Synagogue in the late 40s in Cleveland Heights. In the 80s they acquired a synagogue in Pepper Pike to house the Hebrew and Sunday schools for our eastward migrating Jewish community. We built again in Pepper Pike in the early 2000s to expand the educational and ritual needs of our synagogue.

Today we are building again as our congregation has determined that the time has come to recognize our Pepper Pike campus as our main facility to accommodate our Jewish community. The challenges our immigrant grandparents faced in their journey to America were so much greater than anything we can imagine. It is not hyperbole to suggest that most of us are alive today because of their courage to immigrate. And yet the challenges of anti-Semitism that brought them to America are still with us as hate crimes against Jews are increasing. We are inextricably linked to our ancestors and our antidote and statement against anti-Semitism is to build.

Our synagogues are not just places of worship, education, and community activities. They are the institutions that build Jews and sustain Judaism. This is the collective responsibility of every Jewish generation who cares about sustaining the next one. This moment is so much bigger than any edi ce we can construct. We are paying forward a debt to grandparents and parents by honoring their memories and acknowledging that their sacri ce to create a better world for us will never be taken for granted.

L'dor V'dor is not a punchline, but our connecting tissue to our past, present, and future. Once giants walked amongst us. They immigrated to America. They fought and defeated the Nazis. They educated and provided us opportunities beyond anything they could ever have imagined for themselves. They presided over the greatest miracle of our lifetime, the establishment of the State of Israel. And they built synagogues to nurture Jews and sustain our Jewish communities. Honor them with your commitment to sustain our next generation of Jews.

Let our shofar this year ring out Hineini – Here I am! Hineini – I am ready and available to do my part! Hineini – because this moment is bigger than Park Synagogue and us! Hineini – because if not now, when? And you thought this campaign was just about another building?

High Holidays on ZoomWe have remained vigilant in following the public health recommendations as we made plans for the High Holidays and knew that the data might change, compelling us to alter our plans to protect the health and lives of the most vulnerable in our community. Park Synagogue has decided, along with other Synagogues, to cancel in-person indoor High Holiday Services to protect the health of the entire congregation during a period of higher risk than we all had hoped.

High Holiday Services will all be on Zoom.

We will be sending out more information via email in regards to all Zoom Services and any changes in the Service times.

The Cleveland community is honored to welcome Rev. Derrick Harkins, Director, of HUD’s new O" ce of Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships, formed by President Biden in February, 2021.

Rev. Harkins past work as a change agent in communities has led him to the helm of this new o" ce. We know that Cleveland has a shortage of a# ordable housing. Our goals in meeting with Rev. Harkins are to gain information about what plans HUD has to increase housing in the Cleveland area for low-income residents, and how we, as faith-based organizations, can help with this e# ort and directly address the housing needs of our communities. We look forward to having members of the community join us for this important program.

Family Education and Wolf Religious School

When we look up at the sky on Monday evening, September 6th, we will notice a sliver of the moon. This signi es not only Rosh Hashanah but also Rosh Chodesh Tishrei. The Rabbis have designated Tishrei as the beginning of the religious calendar. Many have asked, why does Rosh Hashanah come early this year and later in other years. It has even been argued that Rosh Hashanah never comes on time –it is always too early or too late!

The earliest recorded secular calendar date for Rosh Hashanah was in 1899 and then again in 2013 when the holiday occurred on September 5th. This year, in 2021, Rosh Hashanah begins almost as early on September 6th! Why does our religious calendar vary from year to year? How does one determine when the holidays occur or even when to commemorate a Yahrzeit date?

The answer can be found in a prayer we recite called Tiku, ‘The sound of the shofar at the New Moon.’ The Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar, 12 months of 29 or 30 days. This causes us to lose eleven days per year when we balance the lunar with our solar-based calendar of 365 days. For this adjustment, we add an entire month seven times in nineteen years. We call that additional month Adar ll.

This incredible calendar was instituted around the fourth century and explains why some years Rosh Hashanah is early and other years it is later! So although we may be celebrating Rosh Hashanah along with Labor Day this year, you can expect it to be ‘late’ in 2022!

Most importantly though, is to always remember that the number of our years may be beyond our control, but their quality depends on us. Wherever you may be this holiday season know that Jews around the world, on Rosh Chodesh Tishrei, are dipping apples in honey and being blessed for a sweet new year. On behalf of the Hochberg, Rube and King family, we wish you a year of blessings for a sweet new year of health, happiness and cherished experiences.

Shanah Tovah Tikatavu,

Rosh HaShanah 5782 – We could say that Rosh Hashanah comes right on time!

Listen!Judaism begins with the commandment:

Hear, O Israel! But what does it really mean to "Hear"?

The person who attends a concertWhile thinking of other mattersHears-but does not really hear.

The Person who listens to the words of a friend, Or child,

And does not catch the tone of urgency:"Notice me, help me, care about me,"

Hears-but does not really hear.

The person who hears the shofar soundAnd does not sense its call to change

Hears-but does not sense its call to change,Hears-but does not really hear.

As the new year begins, O Lord,Strengthen, our ability to hear.

May we hear the music of the world, And the infant's cry.

May we hear the call for help of the lonely soul,And the sound of the breaking heart.May we hear the words of our friends,

And also their unspoken pleas and dreams.

May we hear you, O God. For only if we hear YouDo we have the right to hope that You will hear us,

Hear the prayers we o# er to You this day, O God,And help us to hear them too.

Strange is the bracha on Rosh Hashanah that commands to listen to the sounds of the shofar. Why shouldn’t the bracha say, “ who is commanded to blow the shofar”? It seems that one of the central themes of Rosh Hashanah is to focus attention on the importance of listening.

We are happy to share that we have partnered with Cleveland Israel Bonds to support Israel and Park Synagogue's Capital Campaign.

Israel Bonds support every aspect of Israel's economy, and Park Synagogue has a long history of partnering with Israel Bonds. With a single investment, your gift can have a double impact.

Instead of donating to Park directly with a check, simply purchase a 2, 3 or 5 year Israel Bond and have it registered to "The Park Synagogue." The Synagogue will own the bond and earn interest until maturity.

Please contact Michael Holub (a proud Park member) or Tom Lockshin at the Cleveland Israel Bonds o! ce at (216) 454-0180 or email [email protected].

with Rabbi Josh BennettMonday, October 11 • 1:00 pm • Zoom

Park Synagogue welcomes Rabbi Josh Bennett of Temple Israel in the Detroit area as he shares the amazing story of the Hidden Jews of Ethiopia. We will explore the history of the Ethiopian Jewish community and discover the roots of an African Jewish presence in the ancient Aksumite

Kingdom. Following a trail of clues and historical narratives, we will investigate the possibility that the Ark of the Covenant resides today in modern Ethiopia. Join Rabbi Bennett as he shares stories, images, and videos from his recent trip to Africa to support these wonderful people.

Thanks to the many generous contributions made to Park’s Hunger/Mitzvah Fund this past year, our

congregation was able to donate $6400 to local and national organizations that help feed the hungry, house the homeless, and give general aid to people in need. Park gave generous donations this summer to the Anti-Defamation

League (ADL), Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, Children’s Hunger Alliance, Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank, Cory Food Pantry, Hebrew Cultural Garden, Hebrew Free Loan Association, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), Hebrew Shelter Home, Heights Emergency Food Center, Journey Center for Safety & Healing, JFSA Food Pantry, MAZON, Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates (NOVA), and University Settlement.

Earlier in the year, Park also made generous donations to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Cleveland Kosher Food Pantry, Cleveland Chesed Center, Family Promise of Greater Cleveland, US Together, and Fostering Hope. When making donations to Park Synagogue, please consider designating the Hunger/Mitzvah Fund to help these and other organizations continue their important work to assist people in need in our community.

Because of HIPAA laws, we no longer are noti! ed by hospitals or other facilities who is a patient. Park Clergy and Sta# are always available to give our congregants the support they need.

We would appreciate if you could please notify Eva Simpson at [email protected] or (216) 371-2244, ext. 127 if you or another Park Synagogue family member is in the hospital or scheduled for surgery, becomes a temporary or permanent resident of a rehab or senior facility, or has moved, changed their email address or phone number.

Phyllis Wachs was the recipient of the Valued Volunteer Award for Park Synagogue Sisterhood at the Women's League for Conservative Judaism convention.

Phyllis Wachs, a past president of The Park Synagogue Sisterhood, has served and supported Park Synagogue Sisterhood in many ways. Most notably, she founded the School Mitzvah Project for needy children in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school system over 15 years ago. Beginning with one school, this project has grown to include seven elementary schools. Over the past ten years this project, funded entirely by donations, has provided school supplies such as backpacks, crayons, pencils, scissors, notebooks etc., to 300 children as well as knit hats, scarves, and gloves. Thank you, Phyllis, for your dedication & service to the Park Synagogue Sisterhood.

Dear Sisterhood Members and Women of Park Synagogue,

I want to thank you for your past support of The Park Synagogue Sisterhood. Membership in Park Synagogue includes membership to the Women's League for Conservative Judaism (www.wlcj.org).

Are your kids getting ready to leave for college in-person this year? Be sure to send a little reminder of Park with them! Enroll your student(s) in Park's College Outreach Program so that they receive 4 holiday care packages, monthly bulletins, and other communications from the clergy at their school addresses. Packages can only be sent to students attending colleges in the continental U.S. Please ll out the form below or online on the Park website to enroll your student(s) and send an $18.00 donation per student to help cover the cost of lling and mailing the care packages.

We welcome Cheryl Isaacson and Jodi Zawatsky as the new College Outreach co-chairs.

IMPORTANT: All students registered in the Park College Outreach Program also must be enrolled as a Park Young Adult Member. This membership serves the important purpose of keeping our young adults connected to Park and Judaism at a time when they may not be living in Cleveland. This membership is for young adult children (ages 18-25) of Park members, and provides the young adult his/her own membership when no longer covered under your family membership. There is a one-time fee of $72.00 to enroll your young adult as a Park Young Adult Member, that covers the young adult until age 25 or marriage, whichever comes rst. Young Adult Members receive all membership bene ts, including a High Holiday ticket, which gives the opportunity to get a reciprocal ticket in another synagogue out-of-town. If you are not sure whether your student is already a Park Young Adult Member, please check with Allison Solomon, Park Membership Director, at [email protected]

Please direct any questions about the College Outreach Program to Ellen Petler at

[email protected] or 216-371-2244 ext. 122.
