BJ’sWholesaleClubistheleadingmembershipwarehouseretailerintheeasternUnitedStates,generatingoverninebillioninretailsalesannually.Runningatightmarginbusinessiscriticaltothecompany’ssuccess.Asearlyas2000,thecompanyidentifiedthepowerpurchaseagreement(PPA)asanidealfitfortheirbusinessmodel,bringingtheenergysavingsofsolarwithouttheattendantcostsandcomplexities.

BJ’swaslookingtoexpandtheiruseofsolartootherstoresintheirfleet.TheyrequiredanexperiencedPPApartnerwhocouldadvisewhenandwherebesttobuildandhadthecapabilitytoworkwithminimumimpacttocoreoperations.TheyturnedtoTiogaEnergy.

Fromaportfolioofnearly200BJ’sfacilitiesinmultiplestates,Tiogaquicklyidentifiedfoursites–twoinMassachusettsandtwoinNewJersey–thatofferedthemosteconomicalPPAoptions.WorkingcloselywithitsEPCpartnerSpireSolarSystems,TiogathensecuredfavorablegovernmentincentivesandcontractsforthesaleofSolarRenewableEnergyCredits(SRECs)fortheseprojects,drivingdownthecostofelectricityinthePPAs.

Tioga’sunderstandingoftheSRECmarketprovedespeciallyvaluableforBJ’sstoreinLedgewood,NJ.Actingquicklytotakeadvantageofthethen-newSRECauctionatthelocalutility–JerseyCentralPowerandLight(JCP&L)–Tiogascaleddownthesizeoftheoriginallyplannedsystem.Whilethesmallersystemproducedlessenergy,itqualifiedfortheauctionanddeliveredBJ’sevenbettersavings.
