Every year the College offers tuition inEnglish to all overseas students, undergraduate and postgraduate, who considerthat their studies would benefit from abeller command of the English language.Classes are held on all three campusesand the tuition is free to students ofKing's College.
The course includes tuition in both wrillenand spoken aspects of the language andlays particular emphasis on academicEnglish, eg study skills, note-taking andwrillen essays and reports.
Initial meetings for all interested studentswill be held on each of the main campuseson the following dates:

Thereafter classes will be held onWednesday afternoons and weekdayevenings at times to be mutually agreedby the Course Director, Ms SusanneEllioll, and the participating students.

The Computing Centre provides a fullrange of computing and data communication facilities, and a comprehensiveadvisory and support service, to all
members of the College. For those whoneed access to computing power greaterthan that which can be provided locally,the Centre's computers may be used toprepare jobs for submission for processing at the national computing centres,including the University of LondonComputing Centre (ULCC), with theirresults returned to King's for furtherprocessing, printing or plolling.
Registered users of our multi-accescomputer are able to communicate byelectronic mail, not only with otherKing's computer user, but also withcolleagues in all Briti h universities andpolytechnics, and in universities andresearch centre throughout the world.
Multi-Access Computers
At the Strand a VAXClu ter of one VAX8800, two VAX 8700s and a VAXScrver3602, which share a common file tore,provides a batch and multi-access computing service, capable of upporting upto 290 simultancous inremctive users. Itsperipherals include magnetic tape drives,line printers, graph plollers, a high peedPostscript laser-primer, and full colour
electro tatic and ink-jet ploller . TheVAX 8350 at Ken ington al 0 offer abatch ervi e while imultancou lysupporting up to 40 interactive user, andhas peripheral which include a magnetitape drive, a graph ploller, a line print rand la er printers (one with Po lSCriptcapabilitie ). All the VAX computers run under version5.3 of the VAX/yMS operating sy tem.On tho e at the Strand and Kensington,most of the major computing languageare available and there are spcciali edpackages for statistics, database management, numerical computation, graphic ,computer algebra, gene scquencing etc.Full details are given in the Centre'svariou publications or may be obtainedfrom the advi ory office (cc below). AtKCSMD there is a maller range ofsoftware, including SPSSX, of particularrelevance to the work of users there.
Microcomputers and Works tat ion
At the Strand, on the mezzanine floor offA-corridor, there are networks of 9 IBMPS/2s (in room 24AA) and 8 MacintoshlIs (24AF), and rooms dedicated tohumanities computing (24AD) andcomputer gmphics (24AB). The IBM andMacinto h network support spread hcctand database applications and they maybe used for document production, rangingfrom simple word processing to full-scaledesk-top publishing, including theproduction of charts and diagrams.
The humanities computing room containsboth IBM and Macinto h mi rocomput requipped with software of particularimportance to staff and postgraduates inthe humanities departments; and textscanners are available for convertingprinted texts into electronic form forsubsequent computer processing. In thegraphic computing laboratory a clu ter ofVAX workstations provides facilities forrunning highly interactive graphicalprograms such as CAD/CAM packages.At Ken ington, there is a network of 12
imbus PC-186s ; it may be used forword processing, spreadshccts and theproduction of charts and diagrams.

The season begin with 'Introduction tothe VAX'; this i designed as a basicintroduction for new users and the onlyprerequisite for attendance is to beregistered to use one of the VAXes. Thecour e lasts for a half-day (14.00 - 17.(0)and is repeated several times during theyear. The fir t course to be given at theStrand will be on Tuesday 9th October;the first at Kensington is on Tuesday 16thOctober.
During the Autumn term there will beVAX based courses at the Strand onelectronic mail, Fortran 77, interactivegraphics u ing UNIGRAPH and SPSSx;and at Kensington on electronic mail,statistics and the use of Minitab.
At both the Strand and Kensington therewill be microcomputer based courses onword processing with Microsoft Word;and at the Strand there will be introductory and advanced courses on DOS on theIBM PS/2, and courses on the databasepackage Ingres, the desk-top publishingprogram Pagemaker and the spreadshcctExcel.
Later in the year courses will be given onthe UNIRAS graphics subroutine , the
AG numerical subroutine library,advanced Fortran, and Pascal.

The Language and CommunicationCentre offers a range of language coursesto undergraduates of all di ciplines.
Half-Course nits
A one-year course, repre enting a twohour weekly lesson and up to 4 or 5 hoursof individual work, leads to a half-courseunit towards a degree.
Students can enrol by completing a formavailable in the Language Centre (Room2B 11), depending on their timetablerestrictions, and on condition that theirmain department agrees to the selectedlanguage element in their degree. Allcourses begin week of 13 October andstudents can enrol at any time.
Languages For Fun
General service teaching is available tostudents wishing to learn a language forfun. Lessons are usually held in thelunch-hour for one hour twice a week.Enrolment costs £10.00 for the year andtuition is free of charge, available on a'fIfSt come first served' basis.
The Language Centre can also be u ed byall students on an open-acce s basis anytime between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.Facilities include CALL (ComputerAssisted Language Learning) and SatelliteTV in French, German, Spani h andItalian.

College Archives
The College Archives house the recordsof King's College London which are ofhistorical interest and/or continuingadministrative value. The recordschronicle the sometimes stonny history ofthe College from its foundations to thepresent day and together with the archivesof Chelsea and Queen Elizabeth Collegesand their predecessor bodies, King'sCollege of Household and Social Scienceand the South Western and ChelseaPolytechnics, constitute an invaluablesource for educational, scientific andsocial historians.
Among the most significant records heldare the minute books of the governingbodies and major committees of all threeColleges; an unbroken series of lettersreceived by the Principal and Secretary ofKing's College during the 19th century;20th century policy files and a substantialseries of financial records. The membership of the College, past and present, isreflected in a regularly updated set ofstudent records for the three Collegesfrom their respective foundations and auseful series of modem personnel files.These are supplemented by the archivesof a number of faculties and departmentsand collections of private and researchpapers presented or left to the College bymembers of staff or fonner students.Much useful printed material is also held,including calendars, prospectuses andCollege magazines, and an ever growingcollection of prints, engravings andphotographs provides a useful pictorialrecord. Significant material relating toKing's College Hospital, BelgraveChildren's Hospital, King's CollegeSchool and the Strand School is alsoincluded. A very important collection, isthe archive for The League for Democracy in Greece and its successor organisation, The Friends of Democracy in Greecewhich fonns an invaluable source for thehistory of Greece after World War n.

Liddell Hart Centre for MilitaryArchives
The Centre holds the private papers ofover 350 senior defence personnel whoheld office in this century and newcollections are accruing at the raLe of 3040 a year. Individual collections range insize from a single file to the 1,000 boxesof Sir Basil Liddell Hart's papers and mayinclude diaries, personal correspondence,copies of official papers, unpublishedmemoirs, photographs and press cULtings.Also available is a growing collection ofmicrofilms of primarily American officialdocuments relating to defence.
The scope of the holdings is vasL, fromhigh level defence policy and strategicplanning as, for example, in the papers ofFM Viscount Alanbrooke and GeneralLord Ismay down to the command ofindividual units in the field. The BoerWar is strongly represenLed and thereafteralmost every major campaign in whichBritish troops were involved falls withinthe collection's parameters, up to andincluding the Cyprus crisis in the 1960s.
Many significant collections reflccl therevolution in weapon technology thiscentury and the re-evaluation of tacticsand strategy which necessarily followedon from the invention of the tank and thedevelopmenL of air power. In the postwar world debate is centred on the nuclearissue and in the papers of AVM SWBMenaul the clash of conflicting theories
and up urge of public altention can beexplored.
The full holding of the Centre aredescribed in a Consolidated List ofAccessions. 1986, and a Supplement, 19(a ailable from the Centre at £3.50 and£1.50 respectively). A leaflet, Informationfor Readers. outline conditions ofaccess.
Work in preparation in the Centre includes a major guide to the locations andcoment of the papers of senior defencepersonnel who served this century and thecompilation of a nuclear history database.
Library Manuscripts Collection
Staff of the Centre also administer theLibrary Manuscripts Collection comprising research material gathered by scholarsconnected with the College and embracing such disparate subjects as Portugueseliterature and Gennan jurisprudence. Thecollection is of literary, historical andscientific interest and is de cribed inManuscripts and Private Papers: A SelectGuide, 1982, available from the Cenlre.
Two valuable subsequent additions arethe archives of Adam InternationalReview and Modern Poetry in Translationwhich together fonn an important sourcefor the study of European literature andcultural history.

PARKING
STRAND CAMPUSParking at the Strand campus is extremelylimited. Some places are reserved forthose members of the College staff whosefull time duties require them to be on sitethroughout the working year and/or tohave their vehicles available for use in theperformance of their duties. A furtherlimited number are available for visitors,College vehicles and disabled drivers.
Other staff parking is on the basis of oncea week, Monday to Friday for member ofthe full time academic staff based at theStrand. Written applications for a permit,issued to eligible members of staff,should be made to Mr R C Redmond,General Services Manager, giving yourname, make and registration number ofyour vehicle. All vehicles should be
removed by 2100 unless arrangementshave been made to the contrary witheither the Services Manager or the MainGate portering taff. In very exceptionalcircumstances a parking space may bereserved by arrangement with the GeneralService Manager.
KE SINGTO CAMPUSParking is by permit only. Anyonewishing to obtain a permit should apply tothe Campus Services Manager (ExtS4499). In addition there are six visitor'sspaces in the Main Building and fourvisitor's spaces in the Alkins Building carpark. Reservations for these spaces arenot essential, but are advised. STRAND CAMPUSLetters are collected from the officialboxes at 1100, 1500 and 1600. If broughtpersonally to the Post Room (19BB MainBuilding) they should arrive 0 LATERTHAN 1700 in term time and 1645 invacations. If at all possible they shouldbe brought earlier so that Post Room staffarc not faced with a last minute rush.
Parcels are de patched once a week and

REPORTING OF ACCIDE 'TS A DINJ RIES
Members of the College are required toreport accidents which result in per onalinjury and which occur on Collegepremises or in connection with Collegeactivities. Other incidents such as fLfes,spillages of harmful substances, etc,where injuries could have resulted shouldalso be reported. Report forms areavailable from departmental offices or theSafety Office; forms must be completedas soon as possible after the incident andforwarded to the College Safety Office.
The CoUege is legaUy obliged to reportcertain accidents and incidents and afailure to do so i not only a criminaloffence but it may have repercu ion if acompensation claim i ubsequentlylodged against the College, or any otherperson or organisation.

The Upper and Lower Senior CommonRooms may be booked by members forprivate functions outside normal hours ofuse, and the Blackwell Room may bebooked at any time, except between 12.30and 2.00, by previous arrangement. Allsuch bookings should be made in advancethrough the Hon Secretary.
Social events are arranged from time totime. These include Senior CommonRoom Dinners, Joint Buffet Supperparties with the King's College Ladies'Club, Wine Tasting evenings and WineAuctions. For the 1990/91 Session, SCRfunctions have been provisionally arranged as follows:

SOCIAL CLUBS
Kensington campusThe Social Club is situated on the groundfloor of the SJA Building and is approached via the South Entrance. Membership is open to all employees of theCollege as well as postgraduates and theannual subscription is, at present, £1. Thebar is open between 1.00 pm and 2.00 pmand in the evenings from 5.30 pm to 8.00pm as a minimum. Longer eveningopenings are available at the discretion ofthe person on bar duty. During bothlunchtime and evening sessions the bar isstaffed by volunteer club members,working on a rota, which usually means alunchtime duty once a month and/or anevening duty once every four weeks.
Membership of the Strand Campus SeniorCommon Room is open to all members ofstaff (including those based on theKensington or Chelsea campuses) in thefollowing categories:
