people, you have the hard science people, you have the people off in fantasy, and you have the painters and sculptors.

”It’s strange and interest-ing, but worth coming.”

The convention is “fan-run,” and for many years was the only convention of its type in the region. Now there are a number of oth-ers, ranging from general interest “cons” to specific sub-genres.

“It’s good and bad,” said convention co-chair Alan DeVaughan. “It’s great for the industry as a whole

because there’s more inter-est in what we do, so there are more people involved. It may be a challenge because there are more options for people, so they may not necessarily come to our convention because they’re going to another convention.”

For some it was a fam-ily affair. Lisa Prescott, of Belleville, came as Elsa from “Frozen,” while her daughter, Aria, 2, came as Olaf. However, Aria spent much of her time asleep in a stroller.

Some other friends also dressed in a “Frozen” theme.

“It’s fun,” Prescott said. “Dressing up, meeting really nice people and buy-ing fun things.”

ARCHON started as a literary convention, but has become a general “con” with programming rang-ing from costuming and cosplay to literature and social issues.

Panels ranging from costuming to Godzilla were held throughout the week-end.

associated with the Literary Underworld, a local writer’s co-op, talked about using mythology in fiction.

Her talk covered a num-ber of topics including how creation myths can shape characters, and the impact of tragic love stories.

Other panels explored writing techniques, hard science, and speculating what might happen on the final season of “Game of Thrones.”

Another Literary Under-world author, Jim Gillen-tine, also participated on several panels, ranging from a talk about the direction of D.C. comics to Kaiju (large monsters like Godzilla).

“It’s just really fun to con-nect with people who have the same interest as you – whether they are writers,

sci-fi geeks, Kaiju geeks,” he said. “It’s just really fun to discuss things with fans of the same thing you love, because it feels like part of a big family.”

He noted that what had been “geek” or “nerd” culture has become more mainstream.

“For a long time if you were into anything like Godzilla, or comics, or hor-ror or anything like that, it was considered very niche,” he said. “A lot of people looked down on you like you’re a nerd, or you’re a geek. Now the geeks rule, we’re in the forefront. It’s finally become cool to be a geek.”
