CITATIONS (both in-text and bibliographic references)

The basic form of any bibliographic entry in the CSE format isauthor(s). year. Title of the work. Source of the work.

The basic form of any in-text citation is (author[s] year).

Literature citations in the text

< One author- Jones (1990) or (Jones 1990)< Two authors- Jones and Jackson (1990) or (Jones and Jackson 1990)< Three or more authors- Jones et al. (1990) or (Jones et al. 1990); BUT INCLUDE ALL

AUTHOR NAMES IN LITERATURE CITED SECTION.

NOTE: the author’s name and the date/year are together – not separated by text! – seeWritingSample for examples):

Literature citations in the bibliography

Author’s names< One author – Jones, T.< Two authors – Jones, T. and J. Smith.< Three or more authors – Kirk, J.T., L. McCoy, M. Scott, and N. Uhura.< Two authors with the same initials – Turner, Eunice and Ernest Turner. (this is the only

time that you use full names!) There’s not a problem with Samejima, J. and K. Samejima.)

Authors are listed alphabetically by first author’s surname. References by a single author precedemulti-authored works by same senior author, regardless of date. Of those multi-authoredworks, 1) references with two authors precede all other multi-authored works and are listed inalphabetical order and 2) references with three or more authors are listed in alphabetical orderof authors, regardless of the number of authors involved.

List works by the same author(s) chronologically, beginning with earliest date of publication. Multiple sources in the same year by the exact same author(s) in the same year are denoted bya, b, c, etc.

Titles

capitalize the first word and any proper names. Opinion is divided on the capitalization of theword after a color. Personally, I tend to capitalize the word if that part of the title is a mostlycomplete sentence.

Generally, the papers are published at the time of the book/volume. For Real Literature (tm), thismay be different; a book of short stories may have works that were originally published over amany year span. In that case, the first date is the publication of the paper/story/article, and thesecond date is the publication of the anthology.

TEXT

See BasicFormatting for basic formatting instructions for your papers.

Cite each figure and table (if used) in the text. Organize text so that they are cited in numericalorder. Use "Figure" only to start a sentence; otherwise, "Fig." if singular, "Figs." if plural (e.g.,Fig. 6; Figs. 5, 6; Figs. 4-7).

Within parentheses, use a semicolon to separate different types of citations (Fig. 4; Table 2) or (Felixand Smith 1988; Jones and Anderson 1989) or (Table 2; Smith and Wesson 1872). Cite severalreferences within parentheses by year, with the oldest one first.

Abbreviations: Use these abbreviations without spelling out: m, cm, mm, µm; designatetemperature as 30EC. Write out other abbreviations first time used in the text; abbreviatethereafter. "Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used...."

Numbers: Write out one to nine unless a measurement or in taxonomic descriptions (e.g., foursamples, 3 mm, 35 sites, 6 yr). Use 1,000 instead of 1000; 0.13 instead of .13; % instead ofpercent. ALWAYS use numbers for dates/years!

The genus name may be abbreviated by a single letter if there’s only one genus starting with thatletter. The full genus name is used to begin a sentence.

TABLES (and FIGURES)

Understand the difference between a table and a figure!

Do not use tabs or spaces to align columns in tables. Use the table building and formatting tools inyour word processing package to create and format tables. Tables are to be single spaced.

EVERY table and/or figure must have a meaningful title! The title should begin with the wordTABLE or FIGURE (all capital letters) and number (in Arabic) followed by a period. As much aspossible the title should be self-explanatory. References are included as part of theFigure/Table title (if necessary).

Do not put a table on a page with text (other than titles) if it will cause a table to be split across pageboundaries. Do not split a table across a page boundary unless the table is too large to fit on apage by itself. Try a slightly smaller font (or landscape orientation) to make the table fit on onepage. NOTE: all columns do not have to be the same width; all rows do not have to be thesame height!

LITERATURE CITED

Single space the bibliography. Entries should be set apart by a blank line between entries. Allentries should use a hanging indent.

ALL references MUST have an author – even if it is “Anon.” or “Unknown!” For anonymous websites use the base domain (e.g., usda) as the author. ALL references MUST have a date – evenif it is “n.d.” or “undated.”

Author’s names should be surname and initials ONLY. The first author is listed surname first; subsequent authors and editors are listed in regular name order. If you have two differentauthors with the same initials, then (and only then) do you use full names.

Cite references in strict alphabetical order by first author's surname. References by a single authorprecede multi-authored works by same senior author, regardless of date. Of those multi-authored works, 1) references with two authors precede all other multi-authored works and arelisted in alphabetical order and 2) references with three or more authors are listed inalphabetical order of authors, regardless of the number of authors involved.

List works by the same author(s) chronologically, beginning with earliest date of publication. Multiple sources in the same year by the exact same author(s) in the same year are denoted bya, b, c, etc.

If a citation cannot be completed at bottom of page, move the entire citation to next page.
