StructureD 2000 Chemical Bonding and Physical Properties of Yb5Bi3. — Single crystals of the title

compound are grown by reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of the elements at 1373 K (2 h) followed by annealing at 1173 K (7 d). Yb5Bi3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 4 and is isotypic with β-Yb5Sb3. Band structure calculations and analysis of the chemical bonding suggest mainly ionic interactions in the crystal structure and a possible Yb2+/Yb3+ mixed valence. Yb-LIII X-ray absorption spectros-copy data show that the effective valence of Yb is 2.11, i.e 89% of the Yb atoms are in 4f14 configuration. — (LIANG, Y.; CARDOSO-GIL, R.; SCHNELLE, W.; SCHMIDT, M.; ZHAO, J.
