CHALCOT WEEKLY
Growing a Supportive Community of Active Learners
Education Week “Mindfulness Healthy Mind, Healthy Body” Thursday 1st June
During the evening, families are invited to experience and be immersed in the Chalcot
mindfulness culture. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness focusses on building
concentration, resilience and empathy. It improves focus in the classroom and helps
maintain a positive and grateful attitude towards learning and life.
Before the workshops, families are invited into the hall for a baked potato feast with your
choice of toppings including, cheese, sour cream and coleslaw.
The evening will be broken into 2 session with 3 different activities. On arrival all families
are required to sign in and receive their timetable and ticket for the evening.

Mid-Year Reports
Teachers are now burning the midnight oil preparing the mid-year reports for parents.
These reports indicate students’ achievement levels at the end of the first half year and also
report on areas for future learning and how parents can help at home. Student midyear
reports will be distributed on the last day of term.
Winter and Asthma
With the onset of the cooler weather, many people find that their asthma seems to flare up.
If your child has asthma at this time of year, it may be advisable to visit your doctor and
review your child’s asthma plan. Please notify the school if there are any changes to the
plan.
If you would like any information relating to asthma please feel free to call the Asthma
Foundation on 1800 645 130.
Dental Health Services of Victoria
Dental Health Services (School Dental Service) is a service for primary school students and
is staffed by Dentists, Dental Therapists and Dental Nurses.
Great importance is attached to the prevention of dental disease, through preventative
procedures such as fissure sealants, topical fluoride applications and through education and
promotion to motivate parents, students, teachers and the community. Additional dental
care provided by DHS includes: examinations, radiographs if necessary, scaling and
cleaning, fillings and extractions on both deciduous and permanent teeth.
Due to a cessation of the federally funded Commonwealth Dental Health Program, co-
payments have been introduced for school dental services. The co-payment is a
contribution towards the full cost of care provided and entitles a child to a course of care
consisting of a dental examination and any treatment arising from that examination.
Parents or guardians holding a valid Concession Card or children who are wards of the state
are exempt from co-payments. Details can be obtained from: Dental Health Services
Telephone: 1300 360 054 or you can visit their website at http://www.dhsv.org.au/
The following people are eligible for public dental care:
All children aged 0–12 years
Young people aged 13–17 years who hold a healthcare or pensioner concession card, or
who are dependants of concession card holders
People aged 18 years and over, who are health care or pensioner concession card holders or
dependants of concession card holders
All children and young people in out-of-home care provided by the Department of Health
& Human Services, up to 18 years of age
All people in youth justice custodial care, up to 18 years of age
All refugees and asylum seekers.
Safe to Get Some Vitamin D
As schools and early childhood services across Victoria prepare for the onset of the cold
autumn and winter months, Sun Smart is encouraging everyone to get some sun exposure
during their week to help with vitamin D levels.
Although ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer, it is also
the best natural source of vitamin D, essential for strong bones, muscles and overall health.
Whenever UV Index levels reach three and above, sun protection is required. At that level,
UV radiation is intense enough to damage the skin and contribute to the risk of skin cancer.
In Victoria, average UV levels are below three between May and August, making it a great
time to get outside for some sun to help with vitamin D levels.
At this low level, the UV is generally not damaging to the skin and sun protection is not
required unless in Alpine areas, near highly reflective surfaces such as snow or if you are
going to spend extended periods of time outdoors.
Children and young people with fair to olive skin should receive two to three hours of sun
exposure to face, arms and hands, or equivalent area of skin spread across a week.
Children and young people with naturally very dark skin will need approximately three to
six times this recommended exposure level.
Given that UV levels vary across the state, Sun Smart recommends checking the Sun Smart
UV Alert for your region each day to make sure UV levels are below three.
UV levels vary throughout the state. UV levels for your area can be found by visiting the
Sun Smart UV Alert in the weather section of your daily newspaper or at:
www.sunsmart.com.au/ultraviolet_radiation/sunsmart_uv_alert

Spider Crabs…
The Zoo really came to visit the preps at Chalcot Lodge this week!
The students were excited to meet a wide range of insects and mini beasts and all had a
chance to touch and talk about their features and behaviours.
They were especially fascinated to view a very active Centipede and watched in awe as
a Trap Door Spider crawled around.
The visit finished with a lovely introduction to some of our local friends that rely on mini
beasts as a source of food – C.J., the Tawny Frogmouth Owl and Boris, the very large
Echidna.
Thanks so much to Chris Humphreys from ‘Wild Action’ for sharing his special friends
with us for the day!
