1. Getting Started
1.1 Overview CaseWare® International Inc. licenses certain content for C-PEM 2013 under agreement with the
Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada). The content provides non-authoritative
guidance on applying auditing standards developed by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)
and adopted in Canada as the Canadian Auditing Standards (CASs) by the Auditing and Assurance
Standards Board in Canada (AASB).
The content in CaseWare®/CPA Canada C-PEM Audit, Review, and Compilation is based on the
Canadian Professional Engagement Manual (C-PEM), which is described by CPA Canada as follows:
“The C-PEM is designed to:
Assist practitioners performing assurance and compilation engagements for small and medium-
sized entities (SMEs); and
Promote consistent application of the Canadian Auditing Standards (CASs) and the review and
compilation standards (other Canadian standards – "OCSs") included in the CICA Handbook –
Assurance.
The goals for C-PEM are to help practitioners:
Educate and train professional accountants and students;
Conduct high quality, cost-effective SME engagements; and
Better serve the public interest.
The purpose of the Canadian Professional Engagement Manual (C-PEM) is to provide practical guidance to practitioners in conducting audit, review and other assurance and compilation engagements for small- and medium-sized entities (SMEs). Problems unique to particular kinds of organizations such as listed entities (public companies) or specialized industries (such as municipalities and financial institutions) are not specifically covered.
The sample forms, checklists, questionnaires and so forth provided in the accompanying file are useful practice aids that can save time and money while ensuring completeness and consistency. These forms are designed:
For use by auditors who have at least some understanding of the CAS requirements.
Consequently, it is highly recommended that staff receive some basic training on the CAS
requirements and the use of the forms before they start work.
To document the results of performing risk assessment procedures in a structured and
systematic way. Such documentation facilitates the consistent assessment of risks, updating of
new information in subsequent years and ease of file review.
For use on all sizes of engagement. Condensed versions of the standard C•PEM forms (where
consider points and instructions have been omitted) have been provided for use by highly
knowledgeable auditors (on CAS requirements) and on smaller audits where some of the CAS
requirements may not be relevant to the particular entity. However, when using condensed forms
(or a structured memorandum), the standard forms (that contain more details about the
requirements) should be used as a reference guide.
However, these practice aids do not address the wide range of circumstances, risk factors or specific industry issues that may exist for a particular client or groups of clients (such as those operating in a specialized industry). Consequently, the C-PEM forms should always be tailored to address the known facts and circumstances of each engagement.

2
The C-PEM is not a substitute for professional standards and the related pronouncements nor is it a
substitute for the practitioner's professional judgment. It is an aid for understanding and consistently
implementing these standards on SME audits and other engagements.
It is anticipated users will:
Read the original pronouncements
It is assumed that practitioners have read and have a basic knowledge of the Canadian Auditing
Standards (CASs) and Other Canadian Standards (OCSs).
Exercise professional judgment in each engagement
The practitioner's application of relevant knowledge and experience to the known facts and
circumstances of each engagement is a key requirement to ensure informed decisions are made
about matters such as materiality, nature and extent of procedures required, evaluation of
evidence obtained and the drawing of appropriate conclusions.”
The content is updated on a regular basis by CPA Canada and practitioners should ensure that they are
using the most up to date version of all forms.
“Condensed audit forms ("c" forms) are abbreviated versions of the standard C-PEM audit forms. They
are designed primarily for use on smaller engagements by auditors who understand the CAS
requirements. Compliance with CAS requirements is required regardless of what forms (standard,
condense or memos to file) are used. Additional information is provided on the use of "c" forms on Form
001c.”
1.2 Disclaimer These forms are designed to assist practitioners in the implementation of “Canadian Auditing Standards"
(CASs) for audit engagements and "Other Canadian Standards" (OCSs) applicable for review and
compilation engagements. The forms are not intended to be a substitute for the CASs or OCSs.
Practitioners should utilize these forms in light of their professional judgment and the facts and
circumstances involved in each particular engagement.
CaseWare® International Inc. and the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada disclaim any
responsibility or liability that may occur, directly or indirectly, as a consequence of the use and application
of these forms.

2. Enhanced vs. Standard Templates
When you install the CaseWare®/ CPA Canada templates, you will be asked which template you want to
install. You can choose from the enhanced template format, the standard template format, or both.
Before proceeding, please review the differences between the Enhanced and Standard templates and
determine which template is appropriate for your Firm.
2.1 CaseWare®/CPA Canada Enhanced Templates The CaseWare®/CPA Canada Enhanced templates provide a standardized framework within which
firms can customize and create content or that they can use out of the box. Firms can take advantage of
the built-in automation, which promotes efficiency in the audit process.
The CaseWare®/CPA Canada Enhanced templates provide powerful functionality not available in the
standard templates, including:
Content Authoring – standardized programs and checklists make it easy for firm authors to create and
manage content. Right-click menu options provide simple to use functionality to add or customize existing
content. Permissions exist to define work program/checklist presentation format and terminology.
Customization options are available to define:
Work program responses
Procedure sign-off behavior
Work program/checklist sign-off retention policies on year-end close process
Assertions (Audit only)
Financial Statement Areas options (Audit only)
Risk options (Audit only)
Control options (Audit only)
Reportable items options
Engagement Profiles (Audit only)
These options are pre-configured in C-PEM.
Content Management – version tracking functionality exists within the enhanced templates to enable
content to be tracked at the document and procedure level, ensuring that client files are always up to date
with the latest firm and CPA Canada content. As the firm author, you define globally how future content
updates are to be addressed in client files.
Tracking Risk – a centralized risk tracking system allows you to create, manage, and report identified
risks. Record risks as they are identified throughout the audit by clicking in any document. Risks are
stored centrally and then conveniently presented in the Risk Report and at the top of each work program.
Risk properties and attributes are easily customizable by the firm author.
Tracking Controls – combined with the centralized risk tracking system, the enhanced template enables
you to create and manage controls and associate controls to the relevant risks. Record controls by
clicking in any document. Controls are stored in the central database and then reported in control
matrices, displaying the relationship with risks and grouped by business cycle.
Tracking Reportable Items – as part of the client engagement process, reportable items may be
identified. The accumulation of reportable items has been automated to help you easily manage and track

them. Record reportable items as they are identified throughout the engagement process by clicking
in any document. Reportable items can be added from any work program or checklist and from other
selected forms. Reportable items can also be linked to specific letters.
Efficient Partner/Manager Review – pre-set the Partner Manager Summary document in the customized
template to present the information deemed important by the firm author for engagement executives.
Multiple versions of the document can be created by copying and pasting and setting the filters to define
the desired content.
Financial Statement Areas (FSA) worksheet – this worksheet provides a central source for reviewing
material accounts, setting up business cycles, defining relevant assertions, and referencing the
appropriate work programs. Used in the planning process, the FSA helps teams quickly and easily
identify material accounts.
Risk Report – a comprehensive report providing detailed information of all risks identified in the
engagement. Apply filters and views to present high-level information that is important to engagement
executives or present detail information for engagement team members.
Control Matrix – a comprehensive report displaying detailed information about the controls and the
association to relevant risks. Create multiple matrices to display the controls by business cycle or manage
within a single matrix by applying business cycle filters.
Work programs and checklists – fully automated documents that are easily customizable by the firm
and the engagement teams. Right-click menu options provide simple to use functionality to customize
content, add existing content from the firm library, link procedures to identified risks, provide efficient sign-
off, automatically create an issue based on pre-defined responses, and much more.
Management Letter Report - The management and presentation of findings can be organized into a
collection of reportable items that is summarized in a Management Letter Report. A reportable item dialog
enables you to collect findings and make recommendations. The Management Letter Report displays all
of these findings in an easy-to-view format. You can then decide which findings are to be published to the
management letter.
Optimiser – Assists engagement teams in building an effective audit by removing unnecessary
documents based on checklist responses or materiality considerations in the Financial statement areas
worksheet
Engagement Profiles – Specifies a set of documents, and, optionally, general options that enables the
engagement team to tailor a client file for a specific type of engagement. The firm can customize the
engagement types, or use CaseWare’s pre-defined engagement profiles. When an engagement team
creates a new client file from the template, an engagement profile can be selected from the list of
available profiles.
Note:
Not all components are included in the enhanced Review and Compilation products, including: Risk Tracking, Risk Report, Control Tracking, Control Matrix, Financial Statement Areas Worksheet, Optimiser, and Engagement Profiles.
In Audit enhanced, engagement profiles are configured to utilize various combinations of the template components.
The enhanced templates must be installed on individual local workstations and should not be installed on a network.

2.2 CaseWare®/CPA Canada Standard Templates The CaseWare®/CPA Canada Standard templates include the content presented in the standard
format prior to the introduction of the enhanced templates. As with the enhanced templates, the standard
templates incorporate many of the basic Working Papers features, including:
Document Manager - for easy access to all working papers
Complete working papers - including leadsheets, ratio analysis, and account analysis
Comprehensive chart-of-accounts - which you can modify to your own specifications
Built-in diagnostics - to aid your file review
Standard engagement and representation letters and materiality guidelines - which you can modify if you choose
The standard templates do not include any of the ‘Improved Functionality’ items that are incorporated
into the Enhanced templates.
In the Standard Audit template, all documents provided by CPA Canada are included on the Document
Manager and need to be adjusted for each engagement. Many forms provided by CPA Canada are
additional tools and not core documents. Refer to the C-PEM manual for guidance.

6. Enhanced Template Customizations
6.1 Making Firm Customizations A designated firm author can customize the Enhanced Templates with firm-specific content. The
customized template can then be repackaged and deployed to staff to serve as the base template that
they will use.
Your Firm will require access to Author Mode to make any the following changes:
Creating new Work Programs or Checklists
Adding, deleting, or modifying procedures in existing Work-programs or Checklists
Changing General Settings (Document AO),
Please contact CaseWare technical support to unlock Author Mode in the template. Customizations to
Review and Compilation are independent of those made to Audit and can be distributed independently.
6.2 Firm Repackage and Distribution If your firm has decided to make changes to the CPA Canada Work Programs and Checklists content,
you will need to distribute your Firm’s updated template to users.
Please follow this process when creating a template with firm-customized C-PEM content:
1. Review the content included in the master file. You may prefer to maintain the default content provided and not make any of your own changes. In that case, just distribute the original Audit, Review, and/or Compilation installation provided by CaseWare; there is no need to repackage.
2. Customize any of the content in the Master file for your firm standards. Add all other firm documents (such as planning, controls, and wrap-up) to the Document Manager in the appropriate folders.
3. Repackage the customized template. You can lock the customized procedures prior to distributing to the users. Upon repackaging, the file you create is a .cwp file. More information on repackaging is available in the Audit WebHelp here.
4. Distribute the repackaged installation (.cwp file) to your users. The user then installs and applies the firm-customized version of the template to the client files.

B. For engagement files based on the Audit C-PEM template, an Engagement Profile Selector dialog will prompt you to select a default set of audit forms and template features for your engagement. Select the profile that best suits the engagement. All components of the selected template are copied automatically into the new client file.
OneForm - "OneForm" profile includes automatic documents, work programs, materiality and the Financial Assertions Worksheet. It also includes "OneForm" - a memo document designed as a framework for CAS documentation requirements.
OneForm + - "OneForm+" uses the "OneForm" profile and adds CaseWare's automated risk tracking and reportable item modules.
Core Practice Aid Forms - "Core Practice Aid Forms" profile includes all available audit features and the Core documents as outlined in the Canadian Professional Engagement Manual (C-PEM).
All Practice Aid Forms - "All Practice Aid Forms" profile includes all available audit features and all documents included in the Canadian Professional Engagement Manual (C-PEM).
No Profile – If selected, all documents from the master file will be copied into the client file.
When a profile is selected, an Optimiser Checklist will automatically open, prompting the
engagement team to answer a series of questions related to the engagement. Answering
each question will mark the associated documents for deletion in the Optimiser
Confirmation Report (AOCR). All work-programs and leadsheets will appear in Part III of
the AOCR. Do not proceed with deleting these documents until materiality is completed.
4. Once all relevant documents have been included in the engagement file, the Engagement Properties dialog is displayed. Select the beginning and ending dates for your client’s fiscal year and click OK.
7.2 Creating a New Client File from Existing Client Data A new file can be created from a client data source. Company details, accounts, journal entries, and other
accounting data are imported from the specified data source and included in the new file.

6. Once all relevant documents have been included in the engagement file, the Engagement Properties dialog is displayed. Select the beginning and ending dates for your client’s fiscal year and click OK.
7.3 Getting Supplemental Documents for your File According to CPA Canada, “The C-PEM audit risk forms are designed to document the results of work
performed in a systematic and consistent manner. These sample forms are designed to facilitate the
detailed/general review and enable the information collected to be updated and reused (where possible)
in subsequent years. The use of any C-PEM form is matter of professional judgment.”
CPA Canada has provided a list of standard forms that would be completed on most audit engagements.
When creating a client file based on the Enhanced Audit template, a dialog prompts you to select the
engagement profile best suited to your engagement (OneForm, OneForm+, Core Practice Aid Forms, All
