Graduated from Yale at 17…as valedictorian!

Earned a master’s in theology; Began preaching career as

assistant to his grandfather – the pastor of one of the largest and wealthiest Puritan congregations.

Became pastor upon his grandfather’s death;

His sermons sparked religious zeal and conversions…often in a frenzied atmosphere;

Leader of the Great Awakening, a religious revival of the 1730s and 1740s

His Downfall

Denounced people by name whom he considered sinners;

Disciplined members for reading what he considered inappropriate books;

Views and opinions were very severe.

Dismissed as pastor; Preached to Native Americans; Eventually became president of

the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University);

Wrote one of the most famous American theological works;

Preached until his death in 1758.
