ThemissionoftheChesapeakeBayMaritimeMuseumistoinspireanunderstandingofandappreciationfortherichmaritimeheritageoftheChesapeakeBayanditstidalreaches,togetherwiththeartifacts,culturesandconnectionsbetweenthisplaceanditspeople.

AswereflectonthispastyearandcelebratetheMuseum’s45-yearhistory,wearegratifiedbytheprogresswehavemadeinachallengingeconomicclimate—allduetothegenerosityofthousandsofmembersandsupporters,thecommitmentofourhard-workingstaffandvolunteers,andthededicationandsupportofourBoardofGovernors.Wehavereachednewfinancialmilestonestogetheronwhichtobuildourfuture:anall-timerecordfortheAnnualFund;asold-outBoatingPartygalawith560inattendance—100morethantheyearbefore—includingmanynew,youngerfaces;andanoperatingbudgetsurplusofapproximately$200,000whichwehavecarriedforwardtoaddressimportantmaintenanceissuesonourcampus.
Eightseniorormid-levelstaffmembers—almostone-thirdofourtotalfull-timestaff—movedontopursueotheropportunities.Theyhavebeenreplacedbyfourenergeticnewcomers.Ourfull-timestaffnowstandsatapproximatelyhalfitspeaklevelofjustafewyearsago,yetwehavenotcompromisedthequalityorquantityofourexhibits,educationprogramsandspecialevents.Testamenttothisaretheresultsofarespectedindependentsurveyinwhichourrecentvisitorsgaveusveryhighmarks,including“topmarks”formakinga“bigdifference”inthequalityoflifeinourcommunity.You’llfindmorekeyfindingsfromourvisitorsurveyonpage9.
Bypartneringwithotherorganizations,weaddednewentertainingandenrichingeventsthatdrewnewvisitorstotheMuseumforthefirsttime.Notevenasteadyraincoulddampenthefunofwatchinglocalwatermencompetefortophonorsina“watermen’srodeo”boatdockingcontest,whilefamiliesandvisitorsenjoyedafeastoffreshlycaughtcrabsatourfirstWatermen’s Appreciation DayinAugust.InSeptemberwehostedtheSt. Michaels Concours d’Elegance,whichdecoratedourwaterfrontwithbeautifulanduniqueautomobilesfromthegrandclassicpre-WorldWarIIera,alongwithantiquerunaboutmotorboatsandladies’highfashion.InOctoberweco-hostedwiththeFrederickDouglassHonorSocietythefirstFrederick Douglass DaytohonorandcelebratetheaccomplishmentsofthisnativesonofTalbotCounty.WealsounveiledournewestexhibitintheMitchellHouse,whichbelongedtoDouglass’ssister,representingthelifeoffreedblacklaborersontheEasternShoreinthe1800s.ThispermanentexhibitandtheneweventswereinadditiontotwoacclaimedtemporaryexhibitsinourSteamboatBuildinggalleries:A Rising Tide in the Heart of the Chesapeake; and Feuchter-Castelli: Lasting Reflections.
EarlierthisyearourBoardofGovernorsandstaffcompletedanewFive-YearPlanthatwillsteerustoour50thanniversaryin2015.Thereisaheightenedsenseofexcitement,energyanddeterminationamongourstaffandgovernorsasweplanandbeginimplementingthestepstoreachourgoals.Someofourambitiousplansincludeathree-yearprojecttorestoreinpublicviewourRosie Parks—consideredbymanytobethefinestandfastestskipjackeverbuilt;addingmoreinterestingandenjoyableactivitiesforchildrenandtheirfamilies;andbringingbackanewandexpandedsteamboat/Baytransportationexhibit.
Weinviteyoutosailwithusintoourfutureasweredoubleoureffortstoengageandinspirethousandsabouttherichmaritimehistory,traditionsandcultureoftheChesapeakeBayanditstidalreaches.WehopeyouwillcomeaboardourJewel of the Chesapeakeandjoininitsimportantwork.

“On May 27, 1963, an informal meeting was held at the Higgins and Spencer store to discuss the establishment of a Maritime Museum of the Chesapeake in St. Michaels…Mrs. Van Lennep explained that the purpose of this Museum would be to preserve examples of boats indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay…A letter from Mr. Mannake, head of the Maryland Historical Society endorsing the idea…was read. [Letters by several others were read]…These gentlemen were all in favor of such a museum, although the Tidewater Fisheries men thought Matapeake might be a better location.
“It was then brought out that St. Michaels had been the center of ship building on the Eastern Shore and that Navy Point, the site under consideration, would be a much more protected spot, as well as having historical significance. The [right of first] refusal of two old houses, formerly the homes of two sea captains, has been obtained. These have water frontage where boats may be berthed. The Town Commissioners of St. Michaels are most enthusiastic and will do everything in their power to help…”
ThusbegantheformationoftheChesapeakeBayMaritimeMuseumundertheauspicesoftheHistoricalSocietyofTalbotCounty.
NavyPointhadbeenthesiteofcrabandoysterhouses,fueldepots,alumbermill,atomatocanningplantandacinderblockfactory.AlandfillofoystershellspiledintotheriverovertenfeetdeeplaidthefoundationofNavyPoint.
OnMay22,1965,theMuseumopenedtovisitorswithBayartifactsexhibitedinthehistoricbrick“DodsonHouse.”In1966theHooperStraitscrew-pilelighthousewasacquiredandmovedtoNavyPoint.In1967itwasdecidedthattheMuseumshouldstandasaseparateentityfromtheHistoricalSociety,andin1968itwasincorporatedasaseparate,non-profiteducationalinstitution.Asfundspermitted,theMuseumacquiredrealestateonNavyPointandfromtheadjacentPerryCabinfarmandeventuallyexpandedtoitscurrent18-acrewaterfrontcampuswithteninteractiveexhibitbuildings.
Aswelookbackover45yearsofprogress,wearegratefulfortheforesightanddedicationofourfounders,donors,formergovernorsandstaff;andwelookaheadwithprideanddeterminationtosteerthisgreatlegacysafelyintothefuture.

A n n o U n C I n g T H E R E S T o R A T I o n o f S K I P J A C K R o S I E P A R K SOnNovember6,2010,theMuseumannouncedplanstorestoreoneoftheChesapeake’smostnotedandbelovedoyster-dredgingskipjacks—theRosie Parks.Rosiewasbuiltin1955bythelegendaryDorchesterCountyboatbuilder,Bronza(“Bronzie”)Parks,forhisbrother,Orville,andshewasnamedaftertheirmother.
OrvilletookimmenseprideinhisboatandracedherintheannualskipjackracesatDealIslandandSandyPoint,winningmoreracesthananyofhisrivals.HedredgedoystersonRosieeveryyearuntil1975,whenhealthissuesforcedhimtoselltheboatatage78.Orvilledied18monthslater.
Sincethen,RosiehasbeeninthecollectionoftheMuseumandtodayisperhapstheskipjackleastalteredfromheroriginalconstruction.AlthoughskipjackconstructionwascommonaroundtheChesapeake,Rosie ParkshasmanydetailsthatidentifyherasaworkofBronzaParks,justasapaintingcanbeidentified
byanartist’sparticularstyle,andMuseumcraftsmenwillreplicatethosesignaturedetails.
ThismajorskipjackrestorationprojectwillbedoneinfullviewofthepublicattheMuseum’sboatyardoverthenextthreeyearsbeginningnextspring.Fundedentirelythroughdonations,therestorationprocesswillprovidehands-onshipwrightexperienceandserveasaprimedynamicexhibitforourvisitors.
TheMuseumhopestoincorporatealargepoolofcommunityvolunteersaswellasschoolandyouthprogramsintherestorationprocess.Visitorswilllearnabouttheculturalaspectsofthisvanishingcommunity—howtheboatsweredesignedand
built,whothedesignersandbuilderswere,howworkersweretreatedandpaid,whatlifewaslikeinthesecommunities,whatthemendidintheoff-seasonandhowtheboatswereusedwhennotdredgingforoysters.
TherestorationprojecthasreceivedagenerousbequestfromthefamilyofRichardGrantwhofondlyrecallMr.Grant’sstoriesofsailingonRosie Parks.WhiletheGrantfamilygiftisenoughtogetstartedonthismajorrestorationproject,additionalphilanthropicsupportisneededtofundtherestorationandtocoverRosie’slong-termmaintenance.

TheresultsarejustinfromasurveyofvisitorstotheChesapeakeBayMaritimeMuseumconductedfromfall,2009,toearlysummer,2010,andwearepleasedtoreporttheMuseumscoredveryhighmarks.Aboveall,respondentssaid
the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum makes a big difference in the quality of life in its community.
Wereceivedthetopmarksinthiscategorycomparedtoallofourpeersandotheraccreditedmuseumsofalltypes.Wereceivedsimilarlyoutstandingmarksforthetrustworthinessofinformationinourexhibitsandprograms.
Likewise,ourvisitorsfeelourmuseumprovidesaconduciveenvironmentforexploringdifficulthistoricalissuesandprovidesanexcellentopportunityforvisitorstoconnectwitheachotherandhaveamemorableexperience.Ofthe33categoriestestedourMuseumreceived“top”ratingsin20and“good”ratings,justbelowthe“top,”in11.Onlytwocategoriesreceived“neutral”ratings,andnonelowerthan“neutral.”
Althoughwearemorevisiblethanmanyofourpeerinstitutions,thesurveysaidwesometimesgetlostintheclutterofmedia.Raisingourprofile,bothinnewsocialmediaandtraditionaloutlets,hasbeenaprioritythisyear,andwebelieveourvisitorswouldrateushigherinthemediacategorytodaythantheydidjustafewmonthsagoduringthesurvey.Ourcustomerservicemarks—includingmembershipservices,visitorservices,marina,storeandcampusamenities—arejustaverageandshouldimproveasweplacemoreemphasisintheseareas,whileoperatingwithintheconfinesofSt.Michaels’uniquezoninglaws.AndvisitorssometimeshavedifficultyfirstfindingtheMuseum,andthenfindingtheirwayaroundcampus–issueswe’vegrappledwithforyearsandwillcontinuetoaddress.
keydrivers—issuesthataremoststronglyrelatedtovisitors’overallimpressionsoftheMuseum—wereinstructive.Thesestoodout:
our exhibits are thought-provoking and eye-opening; the Museum is a good value in terms of time, effort and cost; our exhibits are presented in an understandable way; visitors feel they can connect with the past here; and, again, our Museum makes a big difference in the quality of life in its community.
ThesurveywasdesignedandcompiledbytheCenterforNonprofitManagementandadministeredandanalyzedbytheAmericanAssociationforStateandLocalHistory(“AASLH”).Wewereoneof115museumsthatadministeredthesamesurveyquestionstotheirvisitors,andoursurveyresultswerebenchmarkedagainsttheother114participatinginstitutions.YoumaycontactourChiefCurator,PeteLesher,ifyouwouldlikemoreinformationaboutthesurveyoritsresults.Thissurveyisjustthemostrecentinacontinuingefforttoassessourperformanceasmeasuredbyabroadrangeofcriteria.Wethankourvisitorswhotookthetimetocompletethesurvey,andwehopetheyandotherswillparticipateinfutureperiodicsurveys.Ofcourseit’sunnecessarytowaitforthenextsurvey;wealwayswelcomethoughtsandideasonhowwecandothingsbetter.
