Double Harness Scurry
Time to get excited !
Fast, furious, fun – all combining together and resulting in one of the most exciting driving competitions - Double Harness Scurry. Pairs of ponies galloping with lightweight racing carriages, weaving through cones at speed with drivers aiming to notch up the fastest time, all while their grooms lean out to keep the carriages balanced. The rules are simple, if a ball is knocked down there is a four second penalty. This is added to the time taken to complete the course – the fastest time wins.
There are two height divisions - 122 cms & under, and larger ponies not exceeding 148 cms. Very different to when scurry first started nearly 40 years ago when any height of horse or pony with traditional vehicles competed, but always against the clock.
In only a few day’s time all roads lead to the culmination of the premier scurry championship at the Horse of the Year Show where, after a week of competition, the Osborne Refrigerators Scurry Driver of the Year will be crowned. So it goes without saying that here at Addington, only a week before the Horse of the Year Show, these scurry drivers and ponies are at the very top of their form in their last event before travelling to the National Exhibition Centre.
And, unlike many horse sports, the crowd are positively encouraged to cheer, shout, whoop, holler and stamp their feet. The more noise you make in the arena, the faster these mini thoroughbreds will go!

briefly before I bought him when he was just eight years old.
Philip has had a career change since then and is now an advanced dressage horse. I trained him up through the levels and recently he competed in his first ever grand prix. This amazing horse has also represented Great Britain at small tour level internationally, twice in Deauville in France and once in Waregem in Belgium, where he qualified for the music finals. In addition to this, he has won several UK championships including the Hickstead Masters.

experience at grand prix and hopefully compete internationally at this level in the future. Earlier this year, a young lady I know called Looby Marsden came to my yard to pop Philip over some fences, which was the first time he’d left the ground with a rider in the time I have owned him. He loved it and popped over everything in fine style.
He is a very good doer who doesn’t require any special treatment. In the summer he is out at night and in winter he goes out for a few hours each day, weather permitting. He is a very safe, easy horse to handle and he
It wasn’t an easy start to his career change though, as we got eliminated in our first ever dressage test. Philip was spooking so badly that I couldn’t get him into canter. Fortunately, the canter is now his best pace as he is so active behind, but it took a long time for his canter to develop and become rideable. Philip finds collection easy and his highlights are pirouettes, flying changes and piaffe.
At the age of 14, Philip is very much still in his prime and hopefully has many more years of dressage ahead of him. The plan is for him to gain more
stays relaxed when he is travelling and away from home. Philip is definitely my best friend and very much knows I’m his mummy, as he bangs the door for attention and more food whenever he sees me, which is something he doesn’t do with anyone else. He can be a bit tentative with new people and it can take him a while to trust them. We have a great relationship together and I think the world of him. He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea for dressage as he isn’t conventionally bred, but in my eyes he is perfect and always tries very hard to please me.

briefly before I bought him when he was just eight years old.

20 RIDE & DRIVE : Sponsored by Diane Mellows 9.30 & 11.00am - A HAND SERVICES Outdoor International Ring 1. Judge: Miss. J. Brightwell
To be judged in the following manner. The driver need not be the same competitor as the rider, but the horse/pony must remain the same in both sections.
Ridden Section:Competitors will be asked to walk, trot and canter on one rein, then change the rein and canter only on the other rein. They will then be asked to give an individual show which will include cantering on both reins, extended canter and rein back. Conformation will be included in the judging but riders will not dismount for the stand show. The judge is looking for a horse/pony that is going quietly with good impulsion in the correct pace and in a balanced manner on the bit. The judge will place every horse/pony in the class and award points as follows:- 1st – 1 point, 2nd – 2 points, 3rd – 3 points etc.
Driven Section:Competitors will be judged as for a Private Driving class. The judge will place every horse/pony in the class and award points as follows:- 1st – 1 point, 2nd – 2 points, 3rd – 3 points etc. Points will be added together and the winner will be the competitor with the lowest combined total. Nichola waddicor and cosmo
Wow, Team Cosmo has just completed 500 miles! One year to the day and we have done it.
This started off as a mission to get Cosmo fit, and me driving more and we have achieved that. Little did we know when we took up the challenge that Cosmo would end up having a second lease of life teaching a youngster how to drive as a pair, resulting in them qualifying for Keysoe indoors (they didn’t go to the championships) and doing a two-day outdoor driving trials event. Cosmo has done well over 500 miles and is enjoying it.
We’ve had a lot of fun, have a whole file of photos recording our journey, and it has given a purpose to our drives. In the past we might have wobbled at the weather but now we determinedly head out. Despite being non-competitive, we have
done two Trec events in the search for extra miles, and actually enjoyed them.
I can’t thank Inharness enough for coming up with the idea. Without this incentive, Cosmo might still have been standing around eating his way through the pension fund.

I thought I would give you a quick update on our Drive 500 challenge – so far I have clocked up 400 miles with my ‘Golden Girls’, so only another 100 miles to go! We are having great fun taking part in this and I am surprised at just how many miles we clock up. all in the name of fun. We have taken part in lots of BDS drives, as well as drives with friends. We have completed events in the New Forest, Oxfordshire and as far away as Brecon in Wales. It’s amazing how far those little legs take us when we need them to.
Rachel Lewis and Doris
Rachel lewis and doris
I have completed the Drive 500 challenge and enjoyed every minute of it.
After a slow start to driving this year, due to injuring my knee, I have now got back into the swing of things and completed the Drive 500 challenge. I was driving with friends often incorporating a few pub stops en route. This is ideal in warm and sunny weather with a nice breeze to keep the horses cool and flies away. The Norfolk countryside was beautiful with so many wild flowers lining our routes.
We hosted a Norfolk BDS drive in June so I had to spend time sussing out suitable routes (long and short options) for all. Then in August we have another group of drivers coming to stay for their annual weekend stay and donkeys in September ,so lots of driving to look forward to - www.abbeyfarmliveries.co.uk
Thank you to Doris for being the best horse I could wish for! Yippee says Doris on completing Drive 500.

The unusually named Tennis Cart
together. Andrew asked me to retain
these, so I took them off and cleaned
them before replacing them – it is part
of the vehicle’s history,” he added.
No one is sure where the name Tennis
Cart derives from, but most certainly it
was a name chosen by the builder G W
Smith. Seating four, with an adjustable
seat for balance, Andrew says the
lancewood shafts and side springs
give a very comfortable ride.
Now once more returned to Darley
Dale, this beautifully restored vehicle
has pride of place in the garage.
“Perhaps I ought to find a horse and
get it out again, now it’s looking so
good, ” Andrew finished.

Auction catalogue for the sale of the late Thomas Wharton’s Coaching Plant
4646 inharness Issue 64 | August/September 2019
andrew Derbyshire has recently
had restored, by Philip
Holder of Wellington Carriage
Company, an original Tennis Cart. The
carriage has been in the ownership of
his family from the day it was first built.
Although the exact year of making
is unknown (possibly 1890), the
vehicle was built for Andrew’s great
grandfather Thomas Wharton of
Withington, Manchester who was
listed at the time as a coach proprietor.
With seating for four, it was used as the
family runabout. An evening outing
would be to Wythenshawe Hall to see
a house lit by electricity.
Built by G W Smith of Stockport, a
business that was established in
1878, the Tennis Cart was one of a
wide range of horse-drawn vehicles
produced by the firm. Built to suit a
15.2hh horse, the vehicle was used
as a private carriage. G W Smith were
particularly noted for the beautiful
craftsmanship of their broughams
and landaus.
“My grandmother, who was born
in the year 1882, could remember
driving over to Stockport with her
father to check on the progress of
the vehicle.

sale of effects, the Tennis Cart was
purchased for £16 by Andrew’s
grandfather Henry Derbyshire to
keep it in the family, and brought
by rail to Darley Dale. It continued
as family transport, this time for the
Derbyshire family.
“The Tennis Cart actually arrived from
the sale on a train,” recounts Andrew.
“Can you imagine that happening
today?”
“Henry Derbyshire never drove a car
and used this carriage as his general
form of transport.”
The vehicle languished in a shed for a
considerable number of years but was
given a new lease of life in the early
1970s with a repaint (the structure was
totally sound) for the amazing sum of
£22, which included new upholstery
and lining the wheels and shafts.
The Tennis Cart was used for BDS
rallies in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire
and Cheshire.
Then, for 11 years, the cart was on
display at Caroline Dale-Leech’s at
Red House Stables Museum until the
closure and dispersal sale.
“It’s sad that these beautiful vehicles
do not command the prices that they
deserve. To travel in an original vehicle
is a delight and very comfortable. They
knew how to make springs back then.
“It was sent for a makeover to the
Wellington Carriage Company, and
has been restored over the winter.
During the restoration under the
leather, Philip discovered the original
colour and lining.”
“There are a lot of vehicles of this type,”
explained Philip. “It is of a Ralli Car type
but I don’t know of another vehicle
called a Tennis Cart. At that time different
builders gave them different names.
“At sometime, the shafts had cracked
and were repaired using purpose
made clips. These were placed either
side of the crack and then tightened

At Welling Carriage Company for restoration
The unusually named Tennis Cart
together. Andrew asked me to retain
these, so I took them off and cleaned
them before replacing them – it is part
of the vehicle’s history,” he added.
No one is sure where the name Tennis
Cart derives from, but most certainly it
was a name chosen by the builder G W
Smith. Seating four, with an adjustable
seat for balance, Andrew says the
lancewood shafts and side springs
give a very comfortable ride.
Now once more returned to Darley
Dale, this beautifully restored vehicle
has pride of place in the garage.
“Perhaps I ought to find a horse and
get it out again, now it’s looking so
good, ” Andrew finished.

Auction catalogue for the sale of the late Thomas Wharton’s Coaching Plant

andrew Derbyshire has recently
had restored, by Philip
Holder of Wellington Carriage
Company, an original Tennis Cart. The
carriage has been in the ownership of
his family from the day it was first built.
Although the exact year of making
is unknown (possibly 1890), the
vehicle was built for Andrew’s great
grandfather Thomas Wharton of
Withington, Manchester who was
listed at the time as a coach proprietor.
With seating for four, it was used as the
family runabout. An evening outing
would be to Wythenshawe Hall to see
a house lit by electricity.
Built by G W Smith of Stockport, a
business that was established in
1878, the Tennis Cart was one of a
wide range of horse-drawn vehicles
produced by the firm. Built to suit a
15.2hh horse, the vehicle was used
as a private carriage. G W Smith were
particularly noted for the beautiful
craftsmanship of their broughams
and landaus.
“My grandmother, who was born
in the year 1882, could remember
driving over to Stockport with her
father to check on the progress of
the vehicle.
