BMW M47D20 Engine
Introduction:
The BMW M47 and Rover Group M47R are diesel straight-4 engines. Variants were
manufactured by BMW from 1998 to 2007. BMW gradually adopted high-pressure
common rail fuel injection systems over the lifetime of the M47. All BMW engines of
this period came with thermostats that gradually deform, which causes them to trigger
engine cooling at increasingly lower temperatures and worsening fuel economy. The
original M47 diesel engine featured non-common-rail direct fuel injection and a 1951 cc
block. First seen in 1998, the M47D20 produced 100 kW (136 hp) and 280 Nm
(207 lbft) in its original 320d/520d guise, and 85 kW (114 hp) with 265 Nm (195 lbft) in
the 318d variant. All M47 engines have one Swirl and one Tangential intake port per
cylinder, which can each improve performance under different conditions.

Common Problems:
The BMW Timing Chain consists of a long chain that runs from a gear on your engines crankshaft to gears on your engines camshafts. True to its name, the timing chain determines the valve timing of your engine. If its off by a tooth or two on the gear, your engine either wont run or wont run well. Likewise, if the timing chain stretches over the years, you can get symptoms similar to that of a timing chain that has jumped a tooth.
You may have heard of timing belts, and they do the same thing as a BMW timing chain
they just use a belt to drive the cam gears. The BMW timing chain is a slightly noisier
design, but it has the advantage of an extremely long service life and very precise timing.
All metal parts do wear eventually, however, so if you find inexplicable rough-running
issues on a high-mileage engine, the BMW timing chain is one place to look.
