From the Seven Habits Tree: Put First Things First

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Quote of the Week: Dear Parents and Carers This week at Beauty Point…… We are already into week 4 and the classes are in full swing with their programs providing exciting lessons around the school. Today as I took a new family on a tour there was a class planting corn, another class learning about how to make public speaking a world you can imagine and a third studying one of my favourite books The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Two lucky classes will visit the Zoo tomorrow to highlight their Science learning on The Living World.

Our colourful festival mural by students and Bibi Barba Kindergarten enrolments If you have any friends or neighbours who are in our catchment please remind them that we would love them to come and enrol as we are currently planning staffing and classes for 2020. Huge thanks to our school community as you have let us know who is returning and we can plan for that too.

Cooking at the festival

Festival of Creativity I have included a few extracts from student responses and photos from this event. All student responses were exceptional in their ideas. I have never experienced anything quite like our Beauty Point Festival of Creativity and was impressed by the warmth and generosity of our community who gave up much time to inspire our students. Thank you! Student responses from 3/4R (I will add responses from other classes in the next newsletter) This festival developed our teamwork and taught us new skills…I wish we could have festival of creativity every week so we could go and learn in different workshops… Juliette I liked the comedy and drama workshop because we talked about what it would be like to be a director of a TV show or an actor which I partially want to be. We were filmed talking about

ourselves or an experience or a made up advertisement. I did a small video on how I can solve 3 rubiks cubes. Felix The highlight was the costume designing because it was enjoyable and fun glueing the fabrics on the paper and then cutting them out to make a shirt, a skirt, pants, shoes and accessories. It was also interesting listening to Coco Chanel’s (designer) backstory…I liked movie and music making a lot! It was extremely interesting seeing how movies and music are made! Mr Mowday showed us a sneak preview of a new show coming out called Pretzel and Pickle living in medieval times. I also liked making our own song… Lucia I learnt how to play the ukulele and do fashion design. The performance on the school stage was fun and looked really cool…Ella The highlights were Art class with Ms Duffield, costume designing with Lou and pottery with Miss P because all of it was fun. I loved creativity week and think we should do it again! Mirella I liked that we moved around to different classes and saw their movies and Art. I liked Friday as we got to do different things in classes and the hall. We did drama and a play. I also did digital music. Eden The highlights were basically everything I did. My favourite were cooking and robotics. I could work with my friends and could combine creations in robotics. Ryuto My favourite was when we made three films because I had never done anything like that before and it had such a good message. Holly

Music Count Us In at Beauty Point PS 2019 Today our whole school participated in this event which involves singing a song composed by students together with public schools all around Australia. I can honestly say this is the best Music Count Us In which I have attended because of the spectacular and beautiful way the students sang. Thank you to our teachers Mrs Gregory, Ms Stevens, Mrs Coleman, Ms Weir, Ms Bentley and Ms Heath for increasing our musical opportunities in the school. Research has shown that Arts based education is a proven way to improve confidence, learning in all areas and mental health. Drama activities are being embedded by teachers in their units of work. Current research at Beauty Point PS has clearly demonstrated that Drama activities improve Writing, inferential comprehension and fluency in Reading. Classes 1ER, 2H and 2S and their teachers are working with actors from the Sydney Theatre Company over seven weeks this term and are focusing on improving English outcomes for their students while upskilling in this area. Hansel and Gretel and the Varmint Process Drama Last week all of our students watched Years Three and Four presenting two magnificent items. We are so proud of our students for the amazing theatrical and musical performances and the confidence they showed. Not to mention their excellent memories and timing. Well done Years 3 and 4, Mrs Coleman and Mrs Robertson for leading this. Year One at the Festival Special thanks to Ms Mynett, Ms Webster, Mr Robens and Ms Ewan for working with their wonderful students on singing with Mrs Coleman and drama with Amber for performances at the festival. STEM Showcase and Fair Please encourage your children to participate in the Science Fair led by Mr Johnston and Mr Robens. These teachers will mentor and assist any student who would like to participate. The school will buy resources for your child if there is a Science project they would like to do and are unable to access what they need. The Years 3 and 4 teachers and Mr Robens as leader will be attending the University of Sydney next Friday to present the project based learning of their students. We commend these teachers for creating such wonderful opportunities for their students. Punctuality Please ensure that your child attends school between nine o’clock and three o’clock each day. It is said that a student who attends only ninety percent of the time misses out on one year over their schooling. We know that there can be special circumstances but please adhere to these times on a regular basis. Many thanks, Janelle Warhurst

EARLY STAGE 1 NEWS

KB – ‘Mr Archimedes’ Bath’ KBG is completing an author study this term. We are looking at the wonderful books by Pamela Allen. This week we are reading, writing and completing Drama activities using the text, ‘Mr Archimedes’ Bath’. KBG read and discussed the story and then constructed ‘freeze frames’ for particular scenes. We ‘tapped into’ the characters to find out what they were thinking and why they were behaving in a particular way. Mr Archimedes is puzzled: ‘Why does the bath water go up when the animals start to get into the bath and then it magically goes down when they get out?’ Our Stem unit this term is ‘Floating and Sinking’. We are looking at different materials and objects and wondering why some float and others sink. This work is in preparation for when we make our own boat out of recycled materials. We have to choose carefully as our boat must be able to carry a small object. Anika, Erina and Arcadia tried to make the tennis ball sink. Do you think they were successful?

STAGE 2 NEWS

3/4R – ‘The Cay’ by Theodore Taylor

3/4R wrote diary entries from the main characters (Phillip’s) perspective to describe the important events in the first two chapters of the book, ‘The Cay’ by Theodore Taylor. Tuesday March 21, 1942 Dear Diary, I have horrible news. My manipulative, racist, selfish mother is separating me from my beloved father. She has decided we must leave Curacao. I’m utterly devastated by the cruel and vile actions of my mother. I just feel like running away from everything - humanity, my feelings, reality, life. Yet I cannot hide or escape from depression I feel and I am living with. Every time I think of leaving the place I have learned to call home. It is as if strings are attaching me to the sadness I feel inside and there is no way to detach from it. I want to just cut off the string that’s connecting all my problems to me and be free again. Like I was in Curacao. But it doesn’t work like that. A raging storm inside me lingers with anger, anxiety, sadness, and darkness. But I just can’t stop all these negative feelings. No one is safe. Anywhere. War has made that certain. Deep down I know what I must do. I must follow my mother back to Virginia, even though I yearn for the life I once knew. Thursday 1 April, 1942 Dear Diary, I have lost everything. I feel helpless. Smoke engulfs my body. Flames, hot scorching flames dance around the vessel that was supposed to lead us home to safety. I knew I shouldn’t have followed my mother. She’s the reason we are in this mess. Tears roll down my face as anger swirls through me. As I finally fall asleep I feel it. Thud. My heart is pounding as I’m thrown from the top bunk. We’ve been hit by a torpedo. The screams are deafening. Then, nothing. Written by Lucia 21 February 1942 Dear Diary, I felt very disappointed about moving to America from Curacao. I wished I could stay but the decision is made. Why do my parents make the decisions not me? Now I understood that the war was about danger and destruction. I wanted to stay with my father and live in Curacao but my mother thinks it’s too dangerous to be around the war. If I leave with mother on an S.S ship it’s too risky. I felt dizzy and couldn’t sleep because I kept thinking about those U boats. I’m so sad to leave my home in Curacao! I will miss my friends and especially Henrik and I will really miss my father! Thursday 1 April 1942 I feel shocked about what was happening. Our ship was torpedoed with a crackling explosion and then by a fire. I rushed like a cheetah to the life boats. I heard explosions and saw fire around the ship. The sailors told us to move quickly and one of them helped my mother into a different lifeboat. I heard someone yell to lower the boats but the ship lurched violently and the life boats fell heavily into the water. Terrified, I looked everywhere for my mother. Something powerful happened and we were all thrown into the dangerous sea. As I saw my mother floating out into the distance, I desperately called out to her. That’s the last thing I remember. Written by Juliet Thursday 1 April 1942 Dear Diary, My mum should have listened to me! I charged out of my cabin to the deck. Pain seared through me, as the fire burned dangerously near me. All I could feel was worry, pain, darkness, death and destruction. Suddenly, two sailors with axes appeared. I could sense their distress. Violent explosions scattered debris everywhere. I heard the captain yelling “Passengers off the ship!” My mother selfishly boarded the lifeboat. Rage burst through me like a volcano. I always thought this would happen. A sailor grabbed my hand and dragged me to the lifeboats. Next thing I knew the “Hato” I groped around for my mother and found her arm. I shouted in her ear. My mother mouthed “Watch out.” It was too late. I was knocked out cold. When I awoke, shady trees covered me. I felt the sandy bay and theought where am I? Suddenly a soft velvety voice spoke “Young bahss, how are you feeling?” I turned. Written by Darcy

3/4R also wrote character descriptions using metaphors to describe the mother (“Grace”) in The Cay.

STAGE 3 NEWS

5J – Excursion to Middle Head On Tuesday 29th October, the Year 5 class had a day of outdoor learning at Middle Head. Ranger Mel once again organised for us a wonderful educational experience about the flora and fauna in our area. Uncle Les, an indigenous leader, introduced us to bush tucker and medicines, as well as teaching us important bushland survival skills in case any of us ever get lost in the bush. Ranger Mel also introduced us to weeds and gave us a hands-on lesson on how to remove them. We then had a workshop on propagating a native plant from seed. Acacia Terminalis is an endangered species of plant, with only around 500 left in the world. Each student tested seeds to determine which ones are good, and then we planted one each in a pot, which we have back at school. We will grow these until they can be planted in the wild. This excursion was a pilot in a program that could be rolled out to public and private schools learning about the unique and important features of Middle Head.

BEAUTY POINT SCHOOL NEEDS ETHICS TEACHERS URGENTLY

Primary Ethics is the sole Department of Education approved provider of Special Education in Ethics for NSW public schools. Beauty Point Ethics classes run each Wednesday afternoon.

Do you, or someone you know, have half an hour to help on Wednesday afternoons?

Beauty Point School currently offers the Ethics Program for classes from K to Y 6. We have six teachers for ten classes, with some teachers doing a double shift.

Currently, we are volunteer parents of Beauty Point students and former students. Some of our Ethics teachers have to move on. We urgently need teachers to train now to ensure the Program is viable in 2020.

“Ethics is a rewarding alternative to non-Scripture, a program that encourages lively debate on a range of social topics. It is a joy to teach and the students really love it. But we are facing a teacher shortage, which means BPS might not to be able to offer this Program for all students next year.” Laura, Y 6 Ethics Teacher.

Who can teach Ethics? Parents, grandparents, community members. This is a very rewarding way to be involved in the Beauty Point School community.

Teaching Ethics: What is required?

Primary Ethics website has detailed information: primaryethics.com.au

• Training course of 2 days is run by professional educators and is free of charge. Ethics is setting up accreditation of the course and the teaching experience for your CV

• Each lesson is provided in scripted form, including any photos or handouts, which can be read out, you do not prepare lessons except to print them or use an IPad.

• Prior to a lesson, you only need to read the topic background, the script, which is clearly marked for text, questions, there are no wrong or right answers. About 20 minutes.

• The teacher is the facilitator for the discussions which arise, as the object of the lesson is for students to develop their critical thinking and discussion based skills.

• There is a Beauty Point class teacher in the room to assist you when needed • You are given priority to teach your own child’s class if that is possible

Primary Ethics website has detailed information: primaryethics.com.au

At Beauty Point, Ethics is run on Wednesday afternoons in two sessions, K to Y 2 from 2 to 2.30, and Y3 to Y6 at 2.30 to 3.

Examples of lessons: Primary Ethics Parent’s Newsletter: primaryethics.com.au/parents
