Greetings from your new pastor! First, let me thank the call committee and the church council for all their hard work in the search for a pastor at St. Olaf. Your many prayers were and are appreciated, and I want to encourage you to continue to pray often for God's guidance. I particu-larly appreciated the numerous in-teractions that I had with Brenda Langerud along with many other women who faithfully interviewed me and provided wonderful hospital-ity. Council President Steve Weber and several council members were also awesome to meet at the retreat house during my interview. I especially want to thank all of you for the investment of time you made on the ministry profile where you assessed leadership needs, identified congregational gifts, and for acknowledged the challenges. We'll want to build on that awareness of God's grace and our need for God's continued grace as we strive to faithfully respond to the challenges of our ministry setting. I will need your help to chart the course for our spiritual health and to set goals for the growth of the congrega-tion. Don't be surprised then if I recruit some of the call committee mem-bers to provide me additional guidance as pastor.

If you know of someone serving in the military, please let the church office (662-4911) know.
Second, let me say that I am very excited for St. Olaf and for all the ministries that you are doing right now. You have many gifts and abilities that I want to fully appreciate and to support such as the Hope Center, your worship re-sources, the youth and educational ministries, and the awesome retreat cen-ter. Please know that I will work hard to learn your names, to visit with you at church, your home, or at your job if that suits you, and to get a sense of your gifts, hopes and dreams for St. Olaf, and your baptismal calling. That is what matters to me, to know your life and faith, so we walk together faithfully in this journey of serving the Lord at Devils Lake. Yes, we each have a calling, it is not just for pastors. It has been great to spend time with interim Pastor Paul, to visit with staff, including Jamie Travers, Darci Gilbertson, Kirk Sweeney, and others, and to get to know Shar Gumke and Bishop Terry Brandt at the Northeastern North Da-kota Synod. I look forward to relocating to Devils Lake and serving on the St. Olaf ministry team. You might have some questions of me too. If you would ask me: How should I address you? The answer is that I like to be called "Pastor" or "Pastor Jim". You also might be wondering when I will start and the date for the in-stallation. Well concerning my first Sunday it will be August 21st when I preach and preside at worship. The installation will get planned after I get with church council, the worship and music committee, and the Synod office. You might be wondering when we'll move into our new home in Devils Lake. To work through the selling of our house in Ohio and buying one in Dev-ils Lake, I'll be working at St. Olaf for several weeks before heading back to Ohio to move our household by late September. That means my wife, Barb, will be staying in Ohio until after we move. I'd like to offer a couple verses from Romans 12 for inspiration in this Pastors Page. In verses 1-2 St. Paul says: "I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sis-ters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and per-fect." As we all recognize the transitions in front of us, let us offer ourselves to God as people living in God's grace. When Paul says "present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God" it means we are called to offer our whole lives to God. That might seem scary or give us anxiety until we real-ize that it is the Holy Spirit who falls upon us in baptism and makes us holy. It is the Holy Spirit who prompts us to offer ourselves to God when we think to pray, to help someone, to repair the sanctuary, to teach the faith, to partake of Word and Sacrament, or to bless God through playing music and singing hymns. So let us hold fast with thanksgiving to the transforming and renewing power of God, the God who brought us together in this new call. Let us ener-gize ourselves with the certainty that God's will is revealed to those with open and loving hearts. Thank you St. Olaf for hearing God's call in extending me the letter of call.
In Christ, Pastor Jim

It’s Time
to . . . “It’s time to get ready for
school” is often followed by
manya moan and groan on
school mornings.
“It’s time to begin the party
(or dance or game)” much to
the delight and joy of those
attending.
“It’s time to . . . say good-
bye”. Few of these seem pos-
itive. We’ve heard it at the
hospital, at Gilbertson’s, here
at funerals, or out at the
cemetery. All goodbye’s are
tinged with sadness, I think,
even when said regarding a
lifetime well spent.
You have called your next
pastor, for me, “it’s time to
say goodbye”. I love and ap-
preciate all that you have
done for me. I will leave after
coming to know a place I had
never heard of before. I will
leave having celebrated al-
most a year of ministry to-
gether. I will leave with the
compassionate care given
and expressed during my sur-
prising hip surgeries. I will
leave with many memories I’ll
carry with me of the all-too-
brief time we shared in mis-
sion together.
I bless and praise God for the
time we shared together. And
I ask for God’s blessings as
you start with your new pas-

Six ladies gathered at St Olaf to assemble Baby Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. This was the end result of many months of planning. Over the past year, our crew has been haunting rummage sales and buying baby items at stores to come to this point. Because of the rummage sale shopping, our team was able to put together 34 kits which each contained four diapers, 2 bars of soap, one hand towel, 2 diaper pins, 2 receiv-ing blankets, 2 t-shirts, 2 gowns, 2 pair of socks and a sweater or sweatshirt with a hood or cap. One of our members, Florene, sorts through all these items, keeps a count of each item and bags them before we gather as a team. The items are stacked on a table as to what they are, i.e. a stack of blankets, and then each member circles the table gathering the needed items for a kit. They then take their pile to another table and, taking the receiving blanket, make a bundle which is pinned together. All the bundles are packed in boxes and shipped to Minneapolis to the central warehouse. What fun it is to get together, see all the variety of clothing that has been found and work as a team. The project was followed by fellowship of coffee and treats. Everyone takes part in finding these items, as well as many other congregation members donate each year. Thank you to Thrivent for being part of our Action Team by granting a debit card for $250.00.
