1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE OF WORKS
In May 2014, Tobin Consulting Engineers (Tobin) acting as the Employer’s Representative
and on behalf of their Client, Galway County Council commissioned Priority Geotechnical
(PGL), to carry out a site investigation contract at the locations of proposed works for
Glenamaddy Sewerage Scheme.
The purpose of the investigation is to provide design information for the provision of sewer
network (Cregg’s Road, Kilkerrin Road and Rising Main to WwTP) pumping stations (Main
Street and Kilkerrin Road), wastewater treatment plant and an integrated constructed
wetland system. The scope of the ground investigation, which was specified by Tobin, as
Tendered comprised the following:
19 No. trial pits excavations to a depth 1.5m;
15 No. slit trenches excavations to a depth 1.5m;
41 No. cable percussive to a depth 3.0m;
16 No. rotary boreholes to a depth 10.0m;
All associated sampling and In situ testing of soil and groundwater;
Surface water sampling and testing of streams in the area;
Laboratory testing of soil and rock;
Preparation and presentation of detailed factual reports and drawings as per IS EN
1997 (Eurocode 7) the specification and the Scope the Works and
Reinstatement of all exploratory holes.
The final works as completed are detailed in Section 3.2 of this factual report.
This investigation was carried out in accordance with the contract specification: Specification
and Related Documents for Ground Investigation in Ireland (Engineers Ireland, October
2006), Eurocode 7- Geotechnical Design Part 2, ground investigation and testing (BS EN
1997-2: 2007) and the relevant British Standards (BS 5930:1999 +A2:2010 and BS 1377,
Parts 1 to 9). The fieldworks were carried out between 20th October and 04th February, 2014.
Additional trial pitting and one rotary borehole were subsequently scheduled. The additional
fieldworks were undertaken between the 5th and 6th October, 2015.

1.2 REPORTING
This geotechnical data report (ref: P14100_RP_F01) presents the factual records of the
fieldwork with respect to the site investigation works contract for the proposed Glenamaddy
Sewerage Scheme.
An archaeological report titled “Glenamaddy Sewerage Scheme, Co. Galway, Archaeological
Monitoring of Site Investigations” was prepared by Dominic Delaney and Associates which
details the archaeological monitoring undertaken during the direct investigations fieldworks.
This report is presented in APPENDIX C of this factual report.
No responsibility can be held by PGL for ground conditions between exploratory locations. The
exploratory logs provide for ground profiles and configuration of strata relevant to the investigation
depths achieved during the fieldworks. Caution shall be taken when extrapolating between such
exploratory locations. No liability is accepted for ground conditions extraneous to the exploratory
locations.
No account has been taken of potential subsidence or ground movement due to mineral extraction,
mining works or karstification below or in proximity to the site, unless specifically addressed.
This report has been prepared for Ervia, Irish Water and TOBIN. The information should not be used
without their prior written permission. PGL accepts no responsibility or liability for this document being
used other than for the purposes for which it was intended.

1.3 SITE LOCATION & DESCRIPTION
The site consists of work for the investigation of proposed sewer networks and pumping
stations being mainly on public roads and some in urban residential environments. The
works relating to the site investigation for the waste water treatment plant and the integrated
constructed wetland system are mainly on agricultural land.
1.4 PUBLISHED GEOLOGY
1.4.1 Solid
The Geological Survey of Ireland, 1:100,000 mapping (Sheets) were reviewed and the solid
geology was Visean Limestone (VIS) and is described as undifferentiated Limestones. To the
northwest of the proposed wastewater treatment plant and integrated constructed wetland
system the bedrock is the Ballysteen Formation (BA) described as dark muddy Limestone
and Shale. The two geological formations VIS/ BA are delineated by a fault feature and so
bedrock in the area is expected to be variable. A search of the GSI karst data base identified
numerous features; swallow holes, turloughs and enclosed depressions in the area. The
bedrock was described as a regionally important karstified aquifer of moderate to high
vulnerability.
1.4.2 Superficial deposits
Teagasc, subsoil mapping was reviewed and the overburden deposits were generally
described as Made ground in the urban areas of the site. The proposed area for the
treatment works and constructed wetland are Glacial Deposits derived from Limestone (TLs)
described as Limestone Till (Carboniferous).

2 FIELDWORK
2.1 GENERAL
The fieldwork was carried out in general accordance with BS 5930 (1999)+A2:2010 Code of
Practice for Site Investigation and Part 9 of BS 1377 (1990), Method of Tests for Soil for Civil
Engineering Purposes.

The exploratory locations were selected by PGL in consultation with Tobin and set out
subject to work space restrictions and available access. The ‘as constructed’ exploratory
locations were subsequently surveyed using Trimble V8 GPS equipment to the Ordinance
Survey, Irish National Grid (ING) system of co-ordinates and elevations to Malin Head datum.
These locations are shown on the Exploration Location Plans (dwg. No.: P14100-SI-A,
P14100-SI-01 to P14100-SI-03) presented in APPENDIX D of this factual report.

2.3 SAMPLING
A total of one hundred and seventy seven (177) No. bulk disturbed samples (B), one hundred
and seventeen (117) no. small disturbed samples (D) nine (9) U100 samples, eighty (80)
water samples and rotary core (C) were taken during the fieldworks in general accordance
with Geotechnical Investigation and Sampling – Sampling Methods and Groundwater
Measurements (EN ISO 22475-1:2006).
Grab samples were taken at ten (10) locations for the assessment of surface water quality on
the watercourse that flows through the site. Eight (8) instances of monitoring were required
and the results are presented in APPENDIX B of this factual report.
Unless a period of retention of samples has been specified or agreed, it shall be such that
PGL will appropriately dispose of all soil samples one (1) month after submission of final
reporting. Rotary core samples shall be held for a period up to twelve (12) months.
Environmental samples shall be held by the third party laboratory for a specified period of 60
days before appropriate disposal. Groundwater samples shall be disposed of upon
completion of scheduled testing.

2.4 GROUNDWATER MONITORING
Groundwater was recorded when observed during boring and trial pit excavations. No
groundwater was encountered during cable percussive drilling. However groundwater was
encountered in the trial pits ranging in strike depths 0.8m bgl to 2.20m bgl varying in
description from trickle to slow flow. Groundwater was also encountered during the rotary
drilling between 2.20m bgl and 7.40m bgl.
It should be noted that the normal rate of boring may not permit the recording of equilibrium
groundwater levels for any one groundwater water strike. Groundwater levels were
monitored over a period of 20 minutes noting any changes that may occur. Groundwater
conditions observed in the borings or pits are those appertaining to the period of
investigation. Groundwater levels may be subject to diurnal, seasonal and climatic variations
and can also be affected by drainage conditions, tidal variations etc. The groundwater regime
should be assessed from 19mm/50mm standpipe well installations.
50mm diameter HDPE standpipe wells were also constructed upon instruction to allow for
groundwater monitoring (and in situ permeability testing).

2.5 IN SITU TESTING
Standard Penetration Tests, N values, were typically carried out in the boreholes at intervals
of 1.0m and 2 m depth. The Standard Penetration Test was carried out in accordance with
Geotechnical Investigation and Testing, Part 3 Standard penetration test, BS EN ISO 22476-
3:2005+A1:2011. The data was presented on the relevant logs in APPENDIX A.
In situ variable falling head permeability tests were carried out in 50mm diameter standpipe
wells. In-situ permeability tests were carried out in accordance with BS5930: 1999, Section 4:
Cl. 25.4, within the superficial deposits at 1.0m and 2.0m depth over duration up to one (1)
hour, as detailed on the borehole logs, APPENDIX A of this report. The processed test data
was presented on the relevant borehole logs presented in APPENDIX A of this factual report.
The shape or intake factor, f was derived from the condition at the base of the borehole at
the test depth and test geometry as per Hvorslev (1951).
Generally for all tests soil was flush with bottom of casing so a value of mean k measured
provided a shape factor of 2.75 for all tests undertaken.
Site characteristation, percolation ‘T’ and ‘P’ tests were carried out by a Mr. L Loughrey,
Chartered Engineer on behalf of PGL in accordance with the EPA, Code of Practice,
Wastewater Treatment and Disposal System Serving Single Houses, 2010. The processed
test data was presented in APPENDIX A of this factual report.

3 LABORATORY TESTING
All samples were transported to Priority Geotechnical’s laboratory in Midleton, Co. Cork
examined, logged and prepared for scheduled testing. Laboratory testing was proposed by
PGL, being approved by Tobin. Testing was carried out by PGL, in accordance with BS1377
(1990), Methods of test for soils for civil engineering purposes and the ISRM suggested
methods for rock characterisation, testing and monitoring. The analysis of water quality at
existing receiving water locations was undertaken by Chemtest on behalf of PGL at their
UKAS accredited laboratories in Belfast and Newmarket (UK). The laboratory test results
were presented in APPENDIX B. A summary of tests undertaken were detailed below.

4 GROUND CONDITIONS
4.1 SUPERFICIAL DEPOSITS
The site was characterised by Made ground comprising either topsoil 300mm to 600mm (in
agricultural area- WwTP), or road pavement constituents; bituminous materials overlying
Clause 804 sub-base 500m to 1500mm thick (in the urban area Rising Main and Pipe
Network).
This was underlain by undifferentiated glacial deposits (Boulder Clay) to depths up to 10.0m
bgl comprising of;
slightly sandy, slightly gravelly CLAY with cobble content;
slightly gravelly, sandy CLAY with cobble content;
light grey, slightly gravelly slightly clayey SAND;
brown to dark brown slightly sandy, very gravelly CLAY;
brown slightly gravelly sandy SILT;
Yellow brown slightly gravelly sandy SILT and
Sandy CLAY (** drillers description from open hole rotary).
At borehole BH29, dark brown sandy silty GRAVEL was encountered at 2.5m depth. At
borehole BH23 at 0.5m depth, dark brown slightly sandy slightly peaty SILT was
encountered. Generally rotary drilling was undertaken from a starting depth of 3m – 4m bgl.
At locations where bedrock was not encountered superficial deposits with Boulder content
were encountered in-excess of depth 8m to 10m. Drillers descriptions for these deposits are
generally descriptions such as sandy CLAY with boulders, CLAY with boulders, SAND layers
(RC11 between 2m - 4m depth) and SAND with boulder content.
Standard penetration Test NSPT values associated with superficial deposits from ground level
to 1.5m depth ranged from N value, 2 (indicative of very loose/very soft deposits) to N value,
12 (indicative of firm/medium dense deposits) while deposits between 1.5m and 3.0m depth
were in the general range NSPT value, 6 (loose/soft deposits) to NSPT value, 14 (indicative of
firm/ medium dense deposits). Between 2m and 6m depth in the rotary coring NSPT values
were generally in the range NSPT value, 20 (indicative of firm to stiff/ medium dense deposits)
to N value, 40 (Stiff/dense deposits). Elevated NSPT values were attributed to coarse Cobble,
boulders.

4.2 BEDROCK DEPOSITS
Moderately strong dark grey LIMESTONE slightly weathered with minor Clay infill was
encountered on site at six (6) exploratory hole locations at depths of between 2.3m bgl and
5.8m bgl.

4.3 GROUNDWATER
Groundwater was encountered between depths of 0.8m bgl and 7.40m bgl. Details of the
ground water and installations are presented graphically on the relevant exploratory logs
within APPENDIX A and summarised below. See also section 3.4 for general details.
Nine (9) number 50mm diameter standpipe well, installations were constructed in rotary
boreholes to allow for groundwater monitoring and in situ falling head permeability testing.
One round of monitoring was required under the scope of works. This was undertaken on the
29th January, 2015.

5 SUMMARY
1. The ground conditions at the site was characterised by undifferentiated glacial deposits
of CLAY, SAND and SILT with variable cobble and boulder content to depths up to
10.0m bgl.
2. Moderately strong LIMESTONE was identified between 2.3m bgl to 5.8m bgl.
3. Groundwater was encountered between depths of 0.80m bgl and 7.40m bgl. Details
are presented on the relevant logs in APPENDIX A.
4. Nine (9) number standpipe wells were installed to allow for groundwater monitoring, see
Section 5.3 and in situ falling head permeability testing.
5. Detailed records of the ground and groundwater conditions can be found on the
exploratory logs and photographic records presented within APPENDIX A of this factual
report.
6. Analysis of water quality at existing receiving water locations was undertaken on grad
samples at ten (10) number locations on eight (8) occasions between the 22nd October,
2014 and the 03rd March, 2015. The tests data is presented in APPENDIX B.
7. Laboratory testing was undertaken to determine the classification of the soil and rock
encountered during the ground investigation. The data is presented in APPENDIX B.
8. An archaeological report titled “Glenamaddy Sewerage Scheme, Co. Galway,
Archaeological Monitoring of Site Investigations” was prepared by Dominic Delaney and
Associates which details the archaeological monitoring undertaken during slit trench
excavation. This report is presented in APPENDIX C.
9. Site characteristation, percolation ‘T’ and ‘P’ tests were carried out by a Mr. L.
Loughrey, Chartered Engineer on behalf of PGL. This report is presented in APPENDIX
A.
10. The exploratory locations are presented on the location plans presented within
APPENDIX D of this factual report.
