'A Christian school community, helping children learn and grow to achieve their potential'.
Dear parents,
Those of you who were able to attend the Parent
Information Night, would have seen us ‘have a
moment' where life just got the better of us. Life can be very challenging at times...with kids, work, sport,
family commitments, meetings and the list goes on
and on! It can be so easy to focus on all the things
that are challenging in life rather than focus on the
positives.
You do not have to look far to find statistics about
mental health issues. As adults, we understand that
life is going to have ‘ups and downs’. Our endeavour is to be able to equip our kids with the mindsets, skills
and tools they need to become resilient and are able
to deal with life's circumstances. Life is a wonderful
journey and we want our young people to be able to
navigate the journey with confidence, while at the
same time enjoy the journey and have fun.
As a School, we want to be able to support children,
families and our staff to be mentally healthy, to
handle whatever life brings and to have a great
attitude to life.
After a lot of research, we have found Kids Matter.
This is a framework which helps schools provide an
environment to nurture mentally healthy and well
balanced kids. Schools work together with parents,
carers and the wider community.
This year all staff at Verdun (ELC - Year 7) have begun
a two to three year journey. Staff spent half a day
before school started exploring the first component:
Developing a Positive School Community. We
celebrated the many great things that we are
already doing to support and nurture our children's
mental health and we then looked at how we can do
this even better. These conversations and training will
continue at staff meetings and pupil free days
throughout 2016 and beyond.
To support the start of our journey, we have Tegan Howard working with all students from Reception to
Year 7 focussing on developing social skills. Some of
the topics that Tegan will be working with the students
include: “What makes a good friend?" and “What can I do when friendships are challenging?"
Each week in the newsletter there will be a Kids
Matter section that will keep you updated with what
HCCS is doing, as well as some of the latest research
and ways which you can support your children at
home.
More information can be found at
www.kidsmatter.edu.au/primary
We do pray that you are as excited about this new
initiative as we are.
God's richest blessings,
Angela Harvey and Desley Saldanha

On Monday, the Student Representative
Council from Year 3 to Year 7 met for a
TRAINING COURSE to prepare them for their
role as leaders at HCCS.
Students learned about the roles and
responsibilities of SRC and what it means to be
an SRC member at HCCS.
Students were involved in a range of skill
building games and activities, which
encouraged them to work together as a team.
Students also learned how to run a successful
class meeting and what event fundraising
involves. It was a wonderful morning enjoyed
by all.
I quite enjoyed the team building exercises,
particularly the pole activity. Beth Bryant
I think when Mr Riemann, Miss Lewitzka and
Mrs Harvey did a mock meeting it was really
funny. Bill Crawford
