Christ Lutheran News April 2020

New Life in Jesus!

I am a caterpillar, I hardly make a sound.

I look for lots of leaves to eat Up high and on the ground.

And as I eat, my body grows. I’m ready for a change. I wrap up in a chrysalis: It looks so very strange.

Though it may seem to those who watch That inside I could die,

Our God is making something new— See, now, a butterfly!

Our Savior works in this same way. He died for you one day.

He rose again on Easter morn To take your sins away.

Through faith, believe in his great gift, He’ll make your heart brand new!

And just like me you’ll be transformed; He gives new life to you!

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” ~2 Corinthians 5:17

Dear Christ Lutheran Church,

As I am writing this article, Christ Lutheran has been closed a little over one and a half weeks. There have been so many changes. I’ve never done church this way previously. None of us have. This is not normal. We are all making this up as we go. So, thank you for your coop-eration in a time when everything is in flux.

I am so thankful that I am not alone in this ministry. I am so thankful to have an amazing office manager and lay minister right now who are so good at what they do and I know are both working outside of work hours. I am happy to have technology gurus around me who are making online worship possible for so many people. I am happy to have people around me who are still looking into the future and doing things that will help us now and will im-

pact the church positively into the future. I am thankful for people are contacting people in every way possible: I have called some people and they have told me how happy be-cause they got a call from somebody else in the congrega-tion. This goes for the older people in the congregation and our children. Life has really changed for our young people. Give them a call—you have no idea what that call will mean to them. THANK YOU all who are doing things I am happy for other pastors who are checking up on each other to find out how crazy we are (note, we are all crazy, some more than others though—meant as joke people…a joke…seriously!!!).

Thank you to all of you who are giving at this time. This is not an easy time now. Some are wondering if you’ll have a job in the future. Many of you are connected in some way to farming and I don’t have to tell you the situation there…you’re in it! The volatility in the equity markets is setting rec-ords, and that’s really scary. As Christians who believe in the faithfulness of God, this sense of financial vulnerability is so extremely real. The bills are still coming in at Christ Lutheran, too. Nothing has changed financially here. We still need what we said in the budget.

Many people are giving more at this time…THANK YOU! I want to offer something to all of you. Giving makes a per-son feel better about yourself. God has put something into each of us that tells us we are better when we give. So I am making a suggestion, only a suggestion, that you give what you can. I am not going to deny that the church can use it, but I really want you to feel good about what yourself by contributing to God’s mission in this community of Slayton.

What have your gifts helped with this week? We have com-municated in so many ways to let you know how to be ac-tive in worship and education at Christ Lutheran. We have offered a place where people can walk in the early morn-ings that is warm and dry. We have offered worship ser-vices in so many different ways. We have been ears in the office for people who just want to talk. We have reached out to people who might be isolated too much. Sermons are be-ing written…as well as newsletter articles obviously. Chil-dren are given activities to watch on Facebook (watch Christ Lutheran’s Facebook page…some amazing things are being added daily on there). All of the things that are so necessary for you that come from Dawn are still happening. Confirmation is continuing. This, and so much more, is all happening because of your giving. THANK YOU!! We’re doing well at making this all up as we go. God is certainly with us. THANK YOU, GOD!

God’s richest blessings to you all!

Pr. Dale

Dear Friends in Christ,

Yesterday I did something I’d been putting off. I went to the CLC website and signed up for GivePlus - online giv-ing. It was really fast and easy!

I learned a few things about online giving during this pro-cess. Just in case you don’t know, or have forgotten:

You can make a one-time contribution, or better yet, set up recurring giving.

You choose the frequency for recurring donations. It can be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or even an-nually.

You can give to the general fund or designate gifts to the food shelf, youth, radio broadcast, and World Hun-ger, among other options.

It’s easy to change your giving amount or frequency if you need or want to do so.

At the end of the process, you will receive an email con-firming the details of your donation.

I strongly recommend taking advantage of GivePlus, espe-cially during this time when we are not physically putting money into an offering plate. Nobody asked me to write about this, but I am sold on it.

If you have questions or if you’re interested in starting online giving but are nervous about the process, call me at the par-sonage (836-8136), and I can walk you through it.

Meanwhile…

I invite you to visit the church website https://christinslayton.weebly.com/ frequently. You will find links to worship services and a whole lot of other information. Dawn continues to update it often.

Some new website features:

The youth page now includes a link for online sermon notes for our confirmation students. Worship notes will be submitted digitally for the foreseeable future.

We have a new page for kids. We will continue to add resources for children and families as we are able.

I also invite you to check out our church Facebook page – Slayton Christ Lutheran Church. New bits of inspiration and information are posted daily. It’s a good way to stay in touch with our church family.

Finally, I invite you to use some older technology. Please check up on each other by phone. Especially look out for those who do not have access to the Internet and may feel cut off from the rest of the world.

It’s tough seeing the empty sanctuary and parking lot, but a friend put it in perspective. Pastor Jackie Cook wrote to our home congregation, “The empty church building is a sign of our love and care for the vulnerable among us.”

We pray for your health and safety, and we look forward to a bright future as the family of Christ Lutheran Church.

Yours in Christ,

Gwen

Need Help or Want to Help? As the physical building is closed, we need to find other ways to come together as a congregation. Do you need help with something but don’t know who to ask? Do you want to help in some way, but don’t know who needs help? We have a new website set up for people to re-quest help, and for people to offer to help out. Check it out and fill out the appropriate form.

Murray County Food Shelf

A special offering is being collected for the Murray County Food Shelf. You can mail in a check payable to Christ Lu-theran with “Food Shelf” in the memo or give online. The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign has been extend-ed to April 30.

Monetary donations allow the Food Shelf to purchase items through the Second Harvest Food Bank at a highly dis-counted rate and make your dollars stretch further. This also allows them to purchase milk, fresh fruit and vegeta-bles for the recipient families.

First the Grief, then the Inspiration~ I had been thinking that we are grieving as we go through all the changes that have been thrust upon us. We can each name things that we are missing, con-cerned about, or are making us sad or anxious. When I came upon an article on FB about this very thing, I took notice. The article is called “A Fresh Perspective on the Pan-demic” by Lisa McCrohan. I’m going to share a poem at the end that talks about what we are going through in this difficult time. I am seeing all of this in our church family as we strive together to continue to serve and worship and move forward together. As Pastor Dale said in worship on March 22, he believes that God is opening our eyes to new things. I believe that. ~ Ruth Hoyme “First we grieve. We acknowledge our grief. We acknowledge the collective and personal sufferings. We empty out. We clean out. We exhale. We then breathe in the fresh air of inspiration -- from the divine within, from the earth, and from voices on the mar-gins that historically have been silenced. We breathe together. We create together. We wrestle with this together. We collaborate. We do not go at it alone. We don’t need more gurus. We need more 'community.' First the grief, then the inspiration. First the slowing down, then the rising. First the discomfort, then the delight. We are in this together.”

Easter Story Cookies Author Unknown

To be made the evening before Easter

You need:

1 cup whole pecans 1 tsp. vinegar 3 egg whites pinch salt 1 cup sugar zipper baggie wooden spoon tape Bible

Preheat oven to 300 degrees (this is important--don't wait until you're half done with the recipe!)

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Ro-man soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mix-ing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this repre-sents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bit-terness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

With a mostly quiet Easter at home, this might be a great opportunity to try this recipe with your kids.

21

So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Je-sus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white repre-sents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isa. 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.

Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Ex-plain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27:65-66.

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in des-pair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt. 28:1-9
