3 SPIE x NCKU chapter 2016 report
Preface: In the beginning of this year, we elected a new president, tried to organize an active chapter, and
learned how to plan and hold activities in visiting the chapter at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. A photonics exhibition in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was held for the first time in Tainan, Taiwan by our chapter. It was a great learning experience!
The exhibition ends left us a lot experience in how to make and how to let junior kids know the scientific reason behind the daily views. So we keep to run the summer mini-camp of outreaching on science in remote township in Xuejia (學甲) and Madou (麻豆) for the elementary and junior high school students in summer vacation this year. There are much far away from the central city and the educational resources here are not sufficient. It was our first trial that was out of university to outreach the science to the downtown. Compared to the Optical Electronics Camp in NCKU, it’s a totally different experience.
In fall 2016, the second semester of our chapter, we keep on extending our chapter and joining the learning-service project in assistance. A mini outreach camp was held a mini outreach camp in Da Wan elementary school at Yungkang (永康) district in Tainan.
In the end of the year, we co-organized a SPIE student chapter meeting in Optics & Photonics Taiwan, the International Conference (OPTIC 2016) in Taipei, Taiwan. We shared our experience and activities to other chapters. It is an awesome and memorable year.

5th Optical Electronics Camp
Date: 2016.1.25-2016.1.29 Participants: 120 high school students + 70 workers
In January, this winter vacation; we held a high-school-student-oriented camp mainly on the topic of Photonics. The main purpose of the camp is that we hope to let high school students know much about technology in Photonics, what we learn in this department, and gain much more interest in Photonics. More, we also want to make Photonics technology prevailing among high school students, and further promote Photonics to make it popular.
We want to let high school students know much about technology in Photonics, what we learn in this department, and gain much more interest in Photonics by this camp. By the camp, students can learn new knowledge from variety of games, which might easily catch the attention in the Photonics topics.

First Photonics Exhibition and Science Education in Department of Photonics,
NCKU Date:June 8, 2016 Participants: 105 attendees + 8 volunteers This is the first time we hold the exhibition in our department to popularize photonics knowledge. We set up a series of courses to let the participants know the knowledge we want to deliver .For example, we designed loyalty cards pushing participates to run the whole teaching staffs. On the other hands, there are several people who serve as teaching aids to explain the scientific theory of every staff. By the way, every staff is made by SPIE members! Another core concept in such exhibition is to popularize simple photonics knowledge. Such as sunglasses we usually wear uses the theory of polarization and some people don’t know what it works! With the experience of this time, we determinate to hold such exhition to put our firm heart of popularizing photonics knowledge into practice!

Summer Camp of outreaching on science in Remote Township Date: Aug 19, 2016 Participants: 70 attendees + 7 volunteers
To arouse the kids’ interest in Optoelectronic Science, we prepared some fascinating experiments to demonstrate the magical optical phenomena for elementary school students in Xuejia and Madou district in Tainan City, which is about 30 km away from our university. All we hope is that this activity can not only make the kids participating in learn something different from their textbooks, but also sow the seeds of interest in their minds, stimulating them to look for more details about Optoelectronic Science on their own accord.

Co-organized Learning Service projects Date: 2016/9/13~2016/11/22 Participants: 16 Dawan elementary school students who stayed after school + 37 attendees from NCKU.
During the semester, there is a learning service project in NCKU as a course of sophomore and our chapter takes this project. Mainly, the course is to help students in need (such as the intergenerational education, Immigrant families, etc.) of after - school counseling on their school lessons and to have a habitation on science and photonics.
Our goal is to teach those elementary students ‘how to’ solve and find the answer on their own instead of telling them the answer directly. Also, in the end of our service-learning, we made use of this great chance to hold an exhibition of photonics to promote popular science and give rise to their interest in photonics.

Photonics exhibition and Science education in NCKU Date:November 21, 2016 Participant:162 attendees + 30 volunteers
This is the second time that we hold similar exhibition, but different from the last time, we expend the number of staffs, so not only the members of SPIE but the students majoring in photonics in NCKU can participate the exhibition. What urge us continue holding the exhibition is to popularize knowledge related to photonics, that’s why we recruit the students who isn’t the members in SPIE. By designing the teaching kits and explaining to visitors the principle and theory behind the phenomenon, both the students and the visitors can have a profound impression of photonics.
For the visitors, maybe it’s just another exhibition they will forget they’ve been to; but for these students, what matters is not only the time they spent on making kits or teaching but the review of what they’ve learned. It’s important since from the day on, the knowledge is what they can utilize but words in books.
