4 SPIE x NCKU chapter 2017 report

Preface: After we elected to be the president of the student chapter last year, we held many popular science

activities such as summer camp in Xuejia (學甲) and Madou (麻豆) or visiting the photonics and optical exhibition in National Chiao Tung University. This year, to make our student chapter more active, we made much effort on two main purposes, that is, the popularization of photonics and optics and friendship with other student chapters.

For the popularization of photonics and optics, our target group is the students. We went to several townships in Tainan, such as Danei (大內), Yujing (玉井 ) and Dongshan (東山 ), and held one-day-summer-camp for elementary and junior high students there. They were delighted at this camp because there were many teaching aids we brought that they had not ever seen before. Besides, we cooperated with the science club in senior high school and give the lecture talking about the solar cells and photonics to senior high school students. In these activities, students can not only get interest in science but also know more about the modern technology application of photonics and optics. We felt happy to turn the knowledge we learned in the textbook into the reality and shared our experience to people who are interested in science!!

For the friendship with other student chapters, we met with many student chapters at the conference, such as APNFO11 and Optics + Photonics 2017. Aside from keeping in contact with each other, we discussed our experience about managing the student chapter in order to make the student chapters better. In addition, it is our pleasure to meet the chapter from Utsunomiya University (宇都宮大學) again in Tainan this November, who we had met at Optics + Photonics 2017. We had a good time to have dinner together!!

Next year, we are going to join in the Make Faire 2018 and do something special. Let’s play with the light and have fun!

6 th Optical Electronics Camp Yu-Hung, Yang ([email protected])

Date: Jan 22, 2017 Participants: 100 (senior high students) + 65 (students of DPS, NCKU)

In the winter vacation, the students in DPS hold a camp for senior high students. It not only can introduce our department for them but inspire their interest in photonics. In the camp, we showed them some they could barely see in their daily life, such as li-fi, water fiber and VR, etc.

In addition, we also took them to the labs to broaden their horizons. By using the equipment in front of the students, we introduce some basic the characteristics of light, like refraction, reflection, diffraction and interference.

Popular Science Course in the National Cheng Kung University(NCKU) OEC

6th Zheng-Hao Huang ([email protected])

Date: Jan 23, 2017 Participants: 100 (senior high students) + 65 (students of DPS, NCKU) This year, NCKU OEC 6th, the camp for the senior high school students from the whole Taiwan, cooperated with SPIE NCKU Student Chapter. We provided kinds of popular science courses about optics and electrics for the students who took part in the NCKU OEC 6th. The subjects of courses are multiple, such as watching LED of different colors by wearing SPIE grating glasses, and connecting the circuit with breadboard and some circuit components.

Lessons for student association of Science research Yu-Je TSAI ([email protected])

Location: National Tainan First Senior High School Date: April 12, 2017 Participants: 55 students, 1 professor and 5 volunteers

SPIE student chapter cooperated with students of science research club from National Tainan First Senior High School and gave them lessons about solar cells during their club activity time. In order to get their attention and interest of photonics, we give a lot of information about the sort of solar cells, the history of solar cells and so on, all of these successfully raise their interact about solar cells, so we design a simple participation to make a solar cell, and explain the structure.

Lessons for student association of Science research Lu-Hsiu, Yu ([email protected])

Location: National Tainan Girl's Senior High School Date: April 19, 2017 Participants: 45 students, 1 professor and 8 students of DPS SPIE student chapter cooperated with students of science research club from National Tainan Girl's Senior High School and gave them lessons about photonics during their club activity time. In order to get their attention and interest of photonics, we introduced some special phenomenon such as the mixing of RGB three primary colors、detect the quality of cooking oil、and the scattering of light….etc.

We also demonstrated various kinds of applications such as optical fiber、3D hologram which creates the illusion in empty space and the micro structure behind the LCD screen which makes it able to display colorful pictures. I believe that after participating in this project, they sure gained some more knowledge and basic concepts of photonics.

The promotion of popular science in NCKU JHENG-SYUN SHEN ([email protected])

Date: Jul 4, 2017 Participants: 20 children, 10 professors and 15 students of DPS We would have a mini summer camp for teaching underprivileged students about science in our everyday life in Yujing and Madou on July 7th ; therefore, we invited our professors to bring their kids to this promotion. Most of our professors are still young thus their kids are just study in elementary schools or junior high schools, similar to those in Yujing and Danei .

In our promotion, we taught them some daily optical criterions by using the teaching aids and taught them to make a spectroscope by using a secondhand CD on their own. To make the promotion delighting, we gave the kids some challenges to pass and they could get their award, a led flashlight, at the end of the promotion. Of course, they got their led flashlights with smile.

Summer camp of outreaching on science in Remote Township

Li-Chen Lai ([email protected]) Date: July 7, 2017 Participants: 100 attendees+ 20 volunteers

To show up our profession and promulgate knowledge of Optoelectronic Science, we prepared series of interesting experiments for students in Danei and Yujing district in Tainan City, all we know that conducting experiments by oneself is more helpful than simply reading books. By this activity, we can not only sow the seeds of interest in these students’ minds, but we can also enjoy in teaching. Most important of all, they are longing to seek more mysteries about photonics in the future.

Summer Camp of outreach on Photonics and Optics in Dongshan, Tainan Yan-Ting, Liu ([email protected])

Date: August 23, 2017 Participants: 20 (children) + 15 (volunteers)

In the end of the summer vacation, we went to Dongshan in Tainan and gave elementary students an unforgettable experience. We prepared a lot of demonstration about Photonics and Optics such as Li-Fi, Water Fiber and Diffraction Grating and so on. Besides, we taught them how to make a handmade-spectrometer on their own. They use the spectrometer to see the white light divided into many colors, how interesting it is! They were happy about what they learn and excited to share the experience to their parents. We were also delighted that we can bring these fascinating experiments for children. In addition, our purpose is putting what is in the textbooks into the reality and share to everyone. We hope that students can see or demonstrate what they learn in the textbooks with their eyes!!

Exhibition of photonics in NCKU Yu-Je TSAI ([email protected])

Location: National Cheng Kung University Department of Photonics Date: November 11, 2017 Participants: 8 volunteers and people who attended in this exhibition We ran a plan about spread the knowledge of photonics in NCKU, so we have an exhibition during the Celebration of NCKU, we exhibit a lot of funny things or experiment about photonics, such as VR glasses, water fiber, Li-Fi and a simple AR setting experiment. AR is a dream live in human’s mind, so all participants are interested in AR, which is far than expected.

At the beginning of the second semester of 2016, we held the meeting for members to introduce the

projects, financial status and how it would be used in this semester, and review the last year’s activities. Major activities for the next few months includes：Cooperating with local senior high schools’ clubs by introducing them photonics-related knowledge. Li-Te Tseng ([email protected]) Date: Nov 7, 2017 Place: Tainan, Taiwan Participants: 4 (Members from NCKU) + 2 (Foreign visitors from Utsunomiya university, Japan)

After Lite and Huang join the OP17 conference this summer, we have so many friends around the world. One of our friend, Nia, president of Utsunomiya University Japan Student Chapter and her colleague, Mr. Suma, visit our chapter in their trip of joining other conference held in Tainan. We have a dinner together and interdicting our activity space and beautiful campus, delicious drinks to them. Hope they had a great time in Taiwan and our chapters can have a chance to collaborate together!

Academic presentation of Dr. Gerd Keiser Lu-Hsiu, Yu ([email protected])

Location: National Cheng Kung University-department of photonics Date: October 13, 2017 Participants: 50 (students) + 3 (professors) It’s our great pleasure to have such precious opportunity to invite Dr. Gerd Keiser to National Cheng Kung University and had a lecture of his research. It is so unrealistic to get to see the author of ‘‘Optical Fiber Communication’’, which is the text book of our course, in person. He gave us a brief introduction about varieties of optical fibers and Its application on biomedical engineering including the diagnose and treatments of diseases. Professor really gave us clear interpretation of basic optical concepts in the presentation, though there are still some complex concept that we couldn’t understand which requires even more advanced knowledge. I couldn’t imagine how much he had contributed to the academic research in photonics and appreciate so much of his visit to NCKU.

Opening event


National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Bike Festival Zheng-Hao Huang ([email protected])

Date: March 4, 2017 Participants: Many senior high students from everywhere in Taiwan NCKU Bike Festival is hold in March every year, and it is the big day for the senior high school students from the whole Taiwan. NCKU Bike Festival is the activity for the senior high school students, and there are a lot of stands provided for every department in NCKU, so the senior high school students can come to NCKU this day in order to ask about information about the departments which they are interested in. This year, Department of Photonics has two stands, and the one provide for SPIE NCKU Student Chapter. Our members show some interesting teaching aids, such as Li-Fi, VR, and microscope.

The Exhibition of University entrance interview JHENG-SYUN SHEN ([email protected])

Date: April 7, 2017 Participants: 100 (senior high school students and their parents) + 12 (students of DPS, NCKU)

This exhibition was held on the date of the University entrance interview. We found that more and

more students did not which department they should major in. More seriously, some students knew nothing about the department they had chosen. To avoid this circumstance happening again, we held the exhibition to teach the students what they

will learn about if they majored in Photonics in the future. We taught them some basic optical principles by the simple teaching aids made by our own or borrowed from the professors. Surprisingly, both the students and their parents were interested in the stuff we taught. What a popular subject Photonics is.

During the period of this year’s APNFO, we decided to run a stand for introducing the participants about what SPIE student chapter is and how we could use our resource on popularizing the photonics knowledge, plus, a small demonstration of our achievement these months. Through the handmade instrument, a Li-Fi speaker, the participant can actually take a glimpse at what we’ve been doing these days. And the pictures about the activities we’ve held let people know more about us.

OP17 (Optics and Photonics 2017 in San Diego) Li-Te Tseng ([email protected])

Date: August 5 ~ 10, 2017 Place: San Diego, California, USA Participants: 2 (NCKU chapter attendees, Li-Te Tseng (曾立德) and Zheng-Hao Huang (黃政皓)) It is our first time to join an international that held in the foreign country. Either the application for the travel grants or the planning and the visiting are the first time experience of our chapter. Luckily we did it and had a great time there. Lite and Huang met a lot of people around the world and make friends to them. Except for that, they also learn a lot from the Outreach games exhibitions, Talks of student event series and the posting of both academicals and student activities. It a very good chance for them also for our chapter to have new ideas to plan the activities.
