AndyCarterfirsttraveledtoGuatemalain2007,wherehemetDonVirgilioVicenteinthevillageofSaqJa’.ArefugeeoftheGuatemalanCivilWar,DonVicentereturnedtohelprebuildSaqJa’.Theauthorwasamazedtofindalush,old-growthforestsurroundedbyfieldsandscrubbrush.DonVicenteintroducedAndyCartertoDonMargarito’sdaughter,MaríaGuadalupe(left,withtheauthor),whosharedherfather’sremarkableeffortstopreservethenaturalworldaccordingtoK’iche’Mayatraditions.
AbouttheIllustratorAllisonHavensisoriginallyfromChicagoandcurrentlylivesinQuetzaltenango(Xela),Guatemala.TheillustrationsinMargarito’sForestareauniquecombinationofGuatemalantextiles,photos,andtheartworkofchildrenintheSaqJa’elementaryschool,whereAllisonconductedtwosessionsencouragingstudentstocreateartforthebook.IntroductionforTeachersTheremotemountainvillageofSaqJa’wasoneofmanyindigenousMayanvillagesthatwasdecimatedintheGuatemalanCivilWar,whichravagedthecountrybetween1960and1996.Between1981and1982,theGuatemalanmilitary,undertheauthorityofPresidentEfraínRíosMontt,wagedaruthlesscampaignofgenocideagainstindigenousGuatemalans.Entirevillageswererazedandmorethan200,000peopleweremassacredinorchestratedcampaignsofterror.ManymorebecamerefugeesinMexicoandtheUnitedStates,wherelargecommunitiesofGuatemalansweregivenasylumstatusandsettledinlargemetropolitanareassuchasHouston,LosAngeles,andChicago.Thecivilconflictofficiallyendedin1996,butaffectedgroupsofindigenouspeoplescontinuetopursuejustice.In2013,RíosMonttwasconvictedofgenocideandcrimesagainsthumanity.Aconstitutionalcourtoverturnedthedecisionandhewasseenunfitforretrialin2015.Guatemala’sindigenouspeoplecontinuetofacediscrimination,povertyandunequalaccesstoemployment,healthcare,andeducation.ThepovertyrateofindigenousGuatemalansisalmostthreetimesthatofnon-indigenouspeoples.Againstthisbackgroundofgenocideanddiscrimination,Margarito’sForesthighlightstheimportanceofMayaindigenousknowledgeaboutthenaturalworldandareaffirmationofMayacultureandcustoms.ThetextisinbothEnglishandSpanish,withselectedexcerptsinK’iche’.
