Al Jiwan Women’s Leadership Programme – Practiced Leaders
The perfect pearl – developing leaders with integrity
Learner/Employer Information Pack
Qatar’s National Development Strategy goal is to increase the number of women in leadership roles by
30%. In order for the country to achieve this laudable aim, it will be critical to develop the confidence,
competence and networks of the large number of highly effective, aspirational women in management and
junior leadership positions. In order to address this need, an international collaboration has been formed,
led by Qatar Chamber; Buthaina Al Ansari, Chairperson of Qatariat; Rachel Petero, Founder of Women
Leading Change Qatar; and Professor William Scott-Jackson of UK's Oxford Strategic Consulting.
The Al Jiwan Practiced Leaders programme is one of the results of our collaborative in-depth research
about the specific needs of new Qatari female executives. It is a high impact, 4 day taught course with
supportive pre- and post-course coaching and reflection, designed for women new to leadership roles.
Endorsed by the Qatar Chamber of Commerce, Al Jiwan is setting the benchmark for Women’s Leadership
in Qatar.
“When leaders are worthy of respect, the people are willing to work for them. When their virtue is worthy of
admiration, their authority can be established”
Programme outline
Delegates will start with pre-course reading and self-awareness exercises focused on understanding and
building on existing strengths and styles. The first block of 2 days of teaching focuses on individual context
and strengths, and building visibility, leadership styles and sponsorship. We will connect you with local
coaches and mentors who can support your development as you practice what you learn, before you come
back for a second block of 2 days of teaching approximately 4 weeks later. The second block focuses on
self-management, developing personal leadership skills and leadership in interaction with others.
You will be encouraged to connect with other delegates throughout the programme, and to keep a log of
your reflections and achievements. This log will be used to help you demonstrate impact and return on
investment, and can also form the basis of a portfolio for formal assessment, should you so choose.
The taught part of the programme is delivered by international leadership experts and lecturers, world
class female leaders who have “been there and done it” and can share practical experiences as well as
structured insights, tools and techniques.
The programme is endorsed by the globally-recognised Chartered Management Institute, and course
completion can lead to CMI Membership.
Al Jiwan will be delivered to over 1,000 Qatari women over the next three years. So by attending Al Jiwan
now, you’ll be part of Qatar’s premier Women Leader network, giving you unparalleled relationships with
Qatar’s leading businesswomen.

How is this programme different?
Many leadership courses promoted in the Middle East promote an individualistic, masculine style of
“leading from the front” which, whilst appropriate in certain contexts, is not consistent with the Qatari
leadership style, based as it is on strong relationships and collective responsibility. The Al Jiwan programme
focuses on developing a holistic leadership style that builds on existing beliefs, behaviours and roles, and
includes highly relevant approaches such as:
The importance of leading through influence and networks, rather than relying on formal positional
power
Quiet leadership – a powerful leadership style based on assertiveness and building harmony
The 7 leadership styles and developing a palette of approaches for every situation
Is the course right for you?
The Practiced Leaders programme is designed for women in employment in Qatar, who have some
leadership and management experience and now want to move on to the next level, practice new skills and
refresh their current thinking. We encourage delegates to seek sponsorship from their employer, though
we can also offer places to independent, self-funded delegates.
To assess your suitability for Al Jiwan we will contact delegates individually before the course to assess
individual situation and learning needs. The program will be delivered in English based on local stakeholder
feedback.
