U ndergraduate Andrew Shyu spent last spring as a Carlson School exchange studentat Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. While living abroad, heworked with his professor on a research project analyzing Hong Kong innovation
systems. He enjoyed Hong Kong so much that he elected to stay there the entire summerand was chosen for an internship with the prestigious newspaper, Financial Times. He iscurrently back at the Carlson School, majoring in finance and international business and isscheduled to graduate in May, 2005.

What were the highlights of yourstudy abroad experience in HongKong?
Last Spring, I was helping a professor ofmine with his research on the HongKong innovation system. Basically, weanalyzed companies’ innovationprocesses—how they do research,develop new products, and utilizeventure capital. We found that Americancompanies tend to excel which is likelydue to their propensity towards risk-taking. U.S. companies spend billions ofdollars on research whereas companies inHong Kong think that much investmentin research is debatable as to whether itis really beneficial.
Tell me about your internship with theFinancial Times.
Well, the Financial Times is a UnitedKingdom-based newspaper about the
size of the Wall Street Journal. This pastsummer I worked in Hong Kong in thedivision in charge of Asian financialnews. Specifically, I worked in thedepartment of business development andcorporate strategy and drafted a businessplan for a new publication in MainlandChina. Similar to Hong Kong, there was alot of diversity at the Financial Times(many people from the U.K, Australia,U.S. and Mainland China).
Wow, the Financial Times. How didyou land such a coveted internship?
I found the internship from therecruiting system at HKUST, which issimilar to CARS here at Carlson. Therewere only a couple of us chosen out ofabout 400 applicants, so it was prettycompetitive. I think I had the advantageof having a solid business backgroundfrom the Carlson School. I was also

offered another internship working for aclothing manufacturer but chose theFinancial Times because of its reputationthroughout world.
Congratulations, that’s impressive.Why did you want to study in HongKong?
HKUST was ranked very high amongbusiness schools—I believe it was in thetop 2 in all of Asia—and I thought I hadan advantage because I speak Mandarinand English (Editor’s note: Cantonese is theofficial language and most people speakMandarin and English is the language ofcommerce). Also, I visited Hong Kongbefore and had friends of the family thatlive there.
What was the culture like in HongKong?
The culture is different from the UnitedStates because of the British influence.Hong Kong adopted small cultural traitsfrom the UK such as tea time, and a lotof locals have Chinese-British accents.Although many people speak Mandarinand Cantonese, Hong Kong is verydiverse and people can easily get by solelyspeaking English. In terms of personality,people are more reserved in Hong Kongabout their feelings and opinions thanare Americans. Also, the educationalsystem in Hong Kong is very strict somost of the students don’t take on asmuch job responsibility as quickly as doAmerican students. Because I grew up inAmerica and had more work experiencethan most locals, my American ambitionwas sometimes seen as overconfidence inthe eyes of locals. But, I think I provedmyself and it was a good experience forboth my employer and for me.
Did you suffer from culture shockwhen you first arrived?
No, I had been to Hong Kong severaltimes before I moved there, so I knewwhat to expect. Even though Hong Kongis very different from the U.S., I thinkthe other students adapted easily as well.Because Hong Kong has so muchdiversity and so many people speakEnglish, it is pretty easy to make friendsand get around the city
In hindsight, what would you dodifferently when studying abroad?
Who you know is really important inHong Kong. I think it’s important tomake friends with the locals and not staywith the other exchange students all thetime. I figured out early on that therewere a lot of requirements in order toregister for the popular classes and theprofessors went out of their way for meonce they got to know me. Also, I thinkit would have helped if I would’ve visitedHong Kong for a longer period of timebefore I moved there—a great deal of mytime was initially spent getting to knowmy way around the city.
What advice do you have for studentsseeking jobs/internships?
The pay in Hong Kong is not as high asin the United States and the cost of livingis one of the highest in the world. I foundthat the big American firms are mostlikely to pay higher, American-levelwages. I wouldn’t recommend working inAmerica and attempting to get anexpatriate assignment if you are trying tomove abroad right away because it oftentakes years to get an assignment abroad.If somebody wants to work in HongKong, it would be a good idea to contactthe companies directly.
What resources did you use to helpyou fund your stay abroad?
I lived in the dorms, which wassubsidized by HKUST, so it wasn’t asexpensive as it might’ve otherwise been.The international program in Hong Kongis very solid, and the School helps itsstudents very well.
Where do you envision yourself in 5and 10 years?
In 5 years I might be back in school foran MBA. I am also thinking of getting aJD in corporate/contractual law, and aminterested in mergers and acquisitions. In10 years, hopefully I will be doingsomething related to management/finance on a global scale. I think thattraveling or living abroad would be a plus,but then again it might be harder if I ammarried and have kids by then.
Did you see any particular type ofwork as being in high-demand inHong Kong?
Investment banking and internationaltrade are hot areas because employerswant people to be comfortable withdifferent currencies. However, I thinkthe supply of accountants is greater thanthe demand in Hong Kong because theydon’t need expatriate accountants.
Is there anyone to whom you wouldn’trecommend studying or working inHong Kong?
I don’t think people would enjoy HongKong if they don’t like fast-paced,crowded metropolitan areas. To live inHong Kong, it would be helpful to betolerant towards other cultures. Also,finance is very competitive in HongKong. The students at HKUST are veryaccomplished to have been selected toattend the University and you should beprepared to compete in Hong Kong.

In June, Governor Tim Pawlentytraveled to Poland and visitedCarlson School Partner, the Warsaw
School of Economics. For the secondyear in a row, Business Week Polska, thePolish edition of Business Week magazine,ranked the Warsaw Executive MBAProgram #1 in Poland.
The Warsaw School of Economicstudents, faculty, and businessprofessionals listened intently asPawlenty spoke about economic progressand opportunity. The Governor led a 21-member trade delegation ofenvironmental and informationtechnology professionals in advisingPoland, and the Czech Republic aboutways to develop economically. Those twocountries, now that they are part of theEuropean Union, are moving towards amarket economy and need improvementin information technology andenvironment initiatives. European Unionofficials estimated the costs of bringingPoland up to E.U. standards at between$22 billion and $43 billion. Pawlentybelieves Minnesota can play a big part intheir development because computerelectronic products are the State’s largestexport. “Poland and the Czech Republichave been the most adept of the Centraland Eastern European countries atmoving toward a market economy,”Pawlenty said. “There’s lots of potentialthere, and we want to beat the otherstates to it.”
He stressed that, in order to develop aprogressive country, Poland should followMinnesota’s model and emphasizeeducation, a healthy environment, lowtaxes, and an artistic mind.

On May 16th, 2004, students fromboth the China Executive MBA(CHEMBA) and the Vienna
Executive MBA (VEMBA) joined in agraduation ceremony at the CarlsonSchool for the first time in the program’shistory. The graduation ceremony wasthe culmination of a 10-day internationalresidency program conducted at theCarlson School that is part of thecurriculum for both programs.
The reason for bringing these twoGlobal Executive MBA groups togetherfor the graduation was to furthernetwork Global Executive MBA alumni.Local students from the Carlson SchoolExecutive MBA program alsoparticipated in some events and theWarsaw Executive MBA students(WEMBA) will be joining the othergroups for next year’s residency program.

Companies are becomingincreasingly concerned about ways todecrease operating costs andconsequently many are usingoutsourcing and off-shoring to savemoney. Although outsourcing iscontroversial, many companies seeit as necessary in order to staycompetitive. In fact, ForresterResearch, a Massachusetts-based firm, estimates that by2005, 830,000 U.S. servicejobs will move overseas andprojects that 3.4 million will
move offshore by 2015. The CarlsonSchool is one of a small but growing list
of business schools that is adding toits curriculum acourse that will help
students develop theskills necessary to be

The week of October 25 was packed with learning opportunities for theroughly 30 European Executives who visited Minneapolis for the ESCP-EAP Residency. The objective of the ESCP-EAP Program is to help the
executives better understand North American business culture and best practices.These mid-high level executives are pursuing their EMBAs at the European School of Management and came to see first-hand how some of America’s mosttech-savvy companies conduct business. The themes uniting the readingassignments, conferences, and corporate visits cover: private-public partnerships,entrepreneurship, financial management, strategy and organizational behavior,marketing, and HR Management.
In order to highlight these topics from a uniquely U.S. perspective, theexecutives visited 3M, Piper Jaffray Ventures, Unisys. These visits, along with aguest lecture by David Ring, President and CEO of tech start-up ReVera, providedthe French and Norwegian participants with insight on innovation at companies ofvarious sizes, as well as on the role of venture capital in U.S. companies. Theexecutives’ exposure to U.S. business was complemented by lectures fromprofessors Mahmood Zaidi, Dileep Rao, and Rajesh Chandy, and was topped off by a trip to the Mall of America.
Dean and Amy Sundquist ScholarshipFund Established
’83 MBA Dean Sundquist and his wife Amy established a $250,000endowed scholarship fund to help recruit top full-time MBA students to theCarlson School. In addition, the University of Minnesota President’sScholarship Match Program will match the earnings from the endowment tomaximize the impact of the gift. Scholarships from this fund will cover theprogram costs of participating in an International Programs global seminarand students will receive an additional $1,000 to defray related travelexpenses.

Consider Spending a Semester Abroad
When hiring recent graduates, many companies specifically look for students that have studiedabroad. In fact, some large employers recruit only students that have international experience. Inaddition to making you more marketable, studying abroad is a learning experience where you have
the opportunity to sight-see, network, and make new friends. Studying abroad is affordable and there arescholarships for both Semester Exchanges and the shorter-term Global Seminars (2-6 week). The International Programs Office isexcited to welcome two new staffmembers. Bobbi Dufek is the
International Programs Student Administrator.She will be overseeing student account issues andsupervising student registration for all theinternational exchange programs. Bobbi is a 2003University of Minnesota graduate and holds adegree in history. In her spare time, she coachesswimming and likes to scuba dive.
Wendy Witherspoon is the Global EnrichmentElective Coordinator. She manages the day-to-dayadministration of several Global EnrichmentElective (short-term study abroad) programs. Shealso advises Carlson School undergraduate andgraduate students, administers programs,communicates with international partner officesto coordinate program offerings, participates inprogram promotion, and produces study abroadcommunication materials. Wendy has a Master’sDegree in Educational Leadership and has studiedabroad in Spain, Scotland, China, and Australia.
