court againTIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: The BruhatBengalooru Hotels’ Associ-ation will file another peti-tion in the Supreme Court, questioning the police com-missioner’s directive to shutdown restaurants from mid-night to 6 am.

“The power to give theorder rests with the gov-ernment. The commis-sioner can issue it only inexceptional cases such asduring riots. As per the di-

rection of the SupremeCourt, we will file a peti-tion again. It will be doneafter the weekend,” an As-sociation official told TOIon Saturday.

ROUGH HISTORYThe police commissioneron May 19, 2009, issued anorder to close all places ofpublic entertainment be-tween midnight and 6 am.

Then the associationhad challenged the order incourt. But a new notifica-tion of the order came onJanuary 16 this year whilethe case was still in court.

“The opposition to thenotification was called foron the same day. Under thepretext that no objectionswere received, the propos-al was sent to the govern-ment and the governmentpassed the order on March11,” the Association mem-ber said. B’lore readies to save rainwaterTIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: With the city’sgroundwater table depletingevery day, the mantra should be‘reduce, recycle and reuse’, ac-cording to science experts.

“We have limited options asfar as Cauvery water is con-cerned. We should get rid ofsuch hesitation and plan for wa-ter conservation. It’s now or nev-er,” said Prof M N Mohan Ku-mar, secretary to KarnatakaState Council for Science andTechnology.

Other officials also shared hisview. At a rainwater harvestingmela on Saturday, BWSSBchairman P B Ramamurthy saidthe board will set up a rainwa-ter harvesting park on two acresin Jayanagar.

“As far as implementation ofthe programme is concerned,we have trained 520 plumbers and giv-en them certificates. Their names andaddresses are available on the board’swebsite. We have also set up a help deskfor those who have doubts about the sys-tem,” Ramamurthy said.

“The Tippagondanahalli reservoirhas 13 feet less water compared to last

year, which amounts to shortage of fivemonths supply. If the Cauvery tribunaldoesn’t accede to our request for morewater, then the Cauvery IV phase,II stage project with daily supply of500 MLD will be the last project,” hepointed out.

“In this backdrop, we are concen-

trating on demand manage-ment and setting up four terti-ary treatment plants for recy-cling 5 MLD,” he said. Accord-ing to Rohini Nilekani, chair-person of Arghyam, one of themela organizers, public build-ings should take the lead inrainwater harvesting. “Ban-galore receives 900-mm rain-fall per year. Like Chennai, wemust recharge ground water.”

Rainwater harvesting wasmade compulsory through anotification on August 27, 2009,by giving nine months to houseowners who have homes on atleast 2,400 sqft.

For new buildings, it is 1,200sqft. The amendment will comeinto effect on May 27, 2010. Ifthere is non-compliance,BBMP will recover the costfrom house owners.

HOW MUCH IT COSTS?For setting up a groundwater rechargefacility of 3 feet-by-10 feet-deep well, withcement rings, it costs Rs 10,000 to Rs15,000. People can use water by eitherstoring it in sumps or by recharging thegroundwater table.

Numerous incidents of people from eco-nomically weaker families dying after con-suming hooch had prompted the govern-ment to crack down on illicit liquor sell-ers. Grace time, helpline soon

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Buoyed by the success ofthe 15-minute grace time during the IIPU exams, the government decided tointroduce the same for SSLC studentsin the 2010 exams which commence onApril 1. Primary and secondary educa-tion minister Visweshwara HegdeKageri told STOI the extra time is forstudents to read the questions. “For ex-ample, if the earlier exam time is from9 am to 12 noon, now, it’ll be from 9 amto 12.15 pm,” he said.

He added this year’s exam patternhas been changed with the board intro-ducing more subjective-type questions.“Students have to get used to this,” hesaid. The pattern was revised after therewere objections from certain sections ofsociety that having more objective ques-tions would cramp the writing abilityof students. They also felt this could beone reason for the poor results.

The Central Board of Secondary Ed-ucation (CBSE) board first introducedthe grace time of 15 minutes. Later, the

Pre-University Board introduced it too.Students warmly welcomed this move.

The truth abouttigers is here

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: The numbers ofthis magnificent beast aredwindling. In 2009, 32 tigerswere killed by poachers, whichwas much higher than the pre-vious three years. This year, 16tigers have died so far.

A documentary The TruthAbout Tigers by wildlife con-servation filmmaker ShekarDattatri was released in Ban-galore on Saturday. The filmlooks at the charismatic ani-mal in the wild, and shows itslifestyle and needs.

It tracks the life and strug-gle of the tiger against en-croachment of habitat by hu-mans, how they suffer in thehands of corrupt forest offi-cials and poachers.

Although the documentarypoints to three key conserva-tion methods to protect thetiger — modernizing scientif-ic techniques, protecting tigerspace and bringing reforms in

forest department — theground reality remains grim.

Belinda Wright of theWildlife Protection Societysaid the situation is extreme-ly serious.

“Amidst all the problems,China plans to legalize tradein tiger parts, which will bedisastrous. In a recent surveydone in China, 1,880 peoplewere interviewed; 70% want-ed to save the big cats while50% have been using tigerparts medicine. A majority ofthem prefer medicine derivedfrom tigers. Also, China is thelargest consumer of tiger partsfrom India,” she said. Accord-ing to her, India has the largestnumber of tigers in the wild, and has a duty to the rest ofthe world to save the species.

Biologist Ullas Karanth saidthe recent tiger trap censusdone in Bandipur and Nagar-hole points to 120-130 tigers inthe forests.
