Shastry to lose property now P V a s a n t h K u m a r | TNN Bangalore: Here is some good news for the 20,000-odd depos- itors who had invested in ViniVinc company and have waited patiently for the past five years to recover their mon- ey. Armed with the Karnata- ka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Insti- tutions Act, 2004, the government will auction some of the properties owned by K N Shrinivasa Shastry, chair- man of ViniVinc Souharda Limited, to recover the depos- itors’ money. The auction is scheduled to be held on Thursday at 10.30 am at the taluk office premis- es in Hoskote town. The prop- erties to be auctioned are 26 acres land at Ekarajapura in Soolibele Hobli and an acre 17 guntas land in Mugabala vil- lage in Jadigenahalli Hobli, both under Hoskote taluk. REGISTER ON TIME Prospective bidders are re- quired to register themselves before March 24 with the as- sistant commissioner, Dodda- ballapur sub-division (office is on Podium Block, Visves- varaya Towers, Ambedkar Veedhi, Bangalore) with the necessary documents. The state government had seized the property by an at- tachment order of December 30, 2009. The same was con- firmed by the Bangalore Rur- al special court by way of its order on January 30, 2010, and a sale warrant was issued on February 6, 2010. According to the statement filed before the HC last year, 20,184 depositors had invested nearly Rs 203 crore in the firm. The company owned a total of 49 sites in Bangalore and lands in other districts apart from the lands to be auctioned now. The total value of the assets including cash was assessed at Rs 88.82 crore. [email protected] Govt Calls Auction on March 25 Under Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Institutions Act, 2004, properties of K N Shrinivasa Shastry, chairman of ViniVinc Souharda Ltd, will be auctioned to pay depositors RECOVERY TIME Association will go to court again TIMES NEWS NETWORK Bangalore: The Bruhat Bengalooru Hotels’ Associ- ation will file another peti- tion in the Supreme Court, questioning the police com- missioner’s directive to shut down restaurants from mid- night to 6 am. “The power to give the order rests with the gov- ernment. The commis- sioner can issue it only in exceptional cases such as during riots. As per the di- rection of the Supreme Court, we will file a peti- tion again. It will be done after the weekend,” an As- sociation official told TOI on Saturday. ROUGH HISTORY The police commissioner on May 19, 2009, issued an order to close all places of public entertainment be- tween midnight and 6 am. Then the association had challenged the order in court. But a new notifica- tion of the order came on January 16 this year while the case was still in court. “The opposition to the notification was called for on the same day. Under the pretext that no objections were received, the propos- al was sent to the govern- ment and the government passed the order on March 11,” the Association mem- ber said. The Association wants the matter settled for the benefit of customers. MIDNIGHT CLOSURE OF RESTAURANTS B’lore readies to save rainwater TIMES NEWS NETWORK Bangalore: With the city’s groundwater table depleting every day, the mantra should be ‘reduce, recycle and reuse’, ac- cording to science experts. “We have limited options as far as Cauvery water is con- cerned. We should get rid of such hesitation and plan for wa- ter conservation. It’s now or nev- er,” said Prof M N Mohan Ku- mar, secretary to Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology. Other officials also shared his view. At a rainwater harvesting mela on Saturday, BWSSB chairman P B Ramamurthy said the board will set up a rainwa- ter harvesting park on two acres in Jayanagar. “As far as implementation of the programme is concerned, we have trained 520 plumbers and giv- en them certificates. Their names and addresses are available on the board’s website. We have also set up a help desk for those who have doubts about the sys- tem,” Ramamurthy said. “The Tippagondanahalli reservoir has 13 feet less water compared to last year, which amounts to shortage of five months supply. If the Cauvery tribunal doesn’t accede to our request for more water, then the Cauvery IV phase, II stage project with daily supply of 500 MLD will be the last project,” he pointed out. “In this backdrop, we are concen- trating on demand manage- ment and setting up four terti- ary treatment plants for recy- cling 5 MLD,” he said. Accord- ing to Rohini Nilekani, chair- person of Arghyam, one of the mela organizers, public build- ings should take the lead in rainwater harvesting. “Ban- galore receives 900-mm rain- fall per year. Like Chennai, we must recharge ground water.” Rainwater harvesting was made compulsory through a notification on August 27, 2009, by giving nine months to house owners who have homes on at least 2,400 sqft. For new buildings, it is 1,200 sqft. The amendment will come into effect on May 27, 2010. If there is non-compliance, BBMP will recover the cost from house owners. HOW MUCH IT COSTS? For setting up a groundwater recharge facility of 3 feet-by-10 feet-deep well, with cement rings, it costs Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. People can use water by either storing it in sumps or by recharging the groundwater table. They seized 1,000 litres of fake spirit, 850 bottles of imitation whisky and rum, excise material like corks, labels, chemi- cals, essence, flavours, 35 empty cans, 14 empty drums and 3,000 empty bottles. They also recovered two production machines and two motorcycles. The net worth of property seized is Rs 6.33 lakh. Numerous incidents of people from eco- nomically weaker families dying after con- suming hooch had prompted the govern- ment to crack down on illicit liquor sell- ers. Sources said security agencies in the state keep tabs on anything illegal related to the liquor business. The current raid, too, was an outcome of good planning. STUDENT KILLED IN ACCIDENT College student R Rajesh, 19, succumbed to injuries after his motorcycle was knocked down by a speeding lorry in By- atarayanapura limits on Friday. Rajesh, a resident of Vyalikaval, was a PUC student of a private college near Kengeri Outer Ring Road. The accident occurred near Kengeri Lake around 9 am. He died around 4 pm in Victoria Hospital. Primary and secondary educa- tion minister Visweshwara Hegde Kageri told STOI the extra time is for students to read the questions. “For ex- ample, if the earlier exam time is from 9 am to 12 noon, now, it’ll be from 9 am to 12.15 pm,” he said. He added this year’s exam pattern has been changed with the board intro- ducing more subjective-type questions. “Students have to get used to this,” he said. The pattern was revised after there were objections from certain sections of society that having more objective ques- tions would cramp the writing ability of students. They also felt this could be one reason for the poor results. The Central Board of Secondary Ed- ucation (CBSE) board first introduced the grace time of 15 minutes. In 2009, 32 tigers were killed by poachers, which was much higher than the pre- vious three years. This year, 16 tigers have died so far. A documentary The Truth About Tigers by wildlife con- servation filmmaker Shekar Dattatri was released in Ban- galore on Saturday. The film looks at the charismatic ani- mal in the wild, and shows its lifestyle and needs. It tracks the life and strug- gle of the tiger against en- croachment of habitat by hu- mans, how they suffer in the hands of corrupt forest offi- cials and poachers. Although the documentary points to three key conserva- tion methods to protect the tiger — modernizing scientif- ic techniques, protecting tiger space and bringing reforms in forest department — the ground reality remains grim. Belinda Wright of the Wildlife Protection Society said the situation is extreme- ly serious. “Amidst all the problems, China plans to legalize trade in tiger parts, which will be disastrous. In a recent survey done in China, 1,880 people were interviewed; 70% want- ed to save the big cats while 50% have been using tiger parts medicine. A majority of them prefer medicine derived from tigers. Also, China is the largest consumer of tiger parts from India,” she said. Accord- ing to her, India has the largest number of tigers in the wild, and has a duty to the rest of the world to save the species. Biologist Ullas Karanth said the recent tiger trap census done in Bandipur and Nagar- hole points to 120-130 tigers in the forests. It tracks the life and strug-gle of the tiger against en-croachment of habitat by hu-mans, how they suffer in thehands of corrupt forest offi-cials and poachers.

Although the documentarypoints to three key conserva-tion methods to protect thetiger — modernizing scientif-ic techniques, protecting tigerspace and bringing reforms in

forest department — theground reality remains grim.

Belinda Wright of theWildlife Protection Societysaid the situation is extreme-ly serious.

“Amidst all the problems,China plans to legalize tradein tiger parts, which will bedisastrous. In a recent surveydone in China, 1,880 peoplewere interviewed; 70% want-ed to save the big cats while50% have been using tigerparts medicine. A majority ofthem prefer medicine derivedfrom tigers. Also, China is thelargest consumer of tiger partsfrom India,” she said. Accord-ing to her, India has the largestnumber of tigers in the wild, and has a duty to the rest ofthe world to save the species.

Biologist Ullas Karanth saidthe recent tiger trap censusdone in Bandipur and Nagar-hole points to 120-130 tigers inthe forests.
