No.22. 24th July 2017
Dear Parents, Welcome to Winter! Our students and teachers coped very well with the repeated ‘wet day time tables’ towards the end of last week. It amazes me how the ‘down pours’ often time themselves beautifully with the end of the day. When the weather is extreme I would ask that we all take just a little extra care driving through the roundabout, constantly remaining on high alert for any children who unexpectedly appear. I know that there has been discussion for some time around the limited verandah space which provides shelter at pickup times. Together with the P & F we are looking at extending the shelter provided by the verandah. The proposed pergola type structure would come off the building along the left side (the side entrance to the admin block), increasing the shelter greatly. We really value the range of ideas and types of involvement that come from the parent body, as a result I would like to invite you all to attend one of the St. Mary’s Parent Community Assistance Discussions that we will be hosting on Wednesday August 9th. These discussions will be a chance to highlight and plan for improvements, build family connections and assist voluntary initiatives throughout the school. We will be aiming for action spread across several members of the parent community, rather than always loading up the same parents. I promise there will be no obligation; just come along with ideas and an open mind as you may be able to offer valuable assistance in a manner that hasn’t been presented before. St Mary’s Parent Community Assistance Discussions: Date: Wednesday August 9th. Times: 2:30pm & 7:30pm Where: Hall **Toddlers and babies welcome
Huge congratulations to the St Mary’s Netball Team who represented us so well in their zone match against St Peter Julian. Even though the girls weren’t victorious, their effort, sportsmanship, enthusiasm (and matching braids!) made us very proud! Thank you also to Mrs Primavera for her wonderful coaching and to Mrs Henri for umpiring. This Friday there will be a Chess demonstration for the year 3-6 students run by Kids Unlimited. The purpose of the visit is to introduce the idea of a Chess Club at school and see if this might be something that we can offer the students on a regular basis. Any interested parents are also welcome to join us in the hall at 11:30am. Flyers have gone home today, but I do stress that no decisions have been made as yet; we are still in the investigation stage.
Just a reminder also that we have School Closure Day Thursday 3rd August. This day will be spent focusing on whole school improvement in the teaching of Maths.
My prayers and best wishes for a lovely week.

Presence of God
In the silence of my innermost being,
in the fragments of my yearned-for wholeness, can I hear the whispers of God's presence? Can I remember when I felt God's nearness?
When we walked together and I let myself be embraced by God's love.

Congratulations to the Netball A Team who were undefeated during the Winter Sports Season and went on to play last Friday against SPJE in the final. Team Members included: Kelsey F, Jorja R, Alice McC, Taleesha O’K, Ella S, Shalina T, Yasmine R, Lily H-S, Taylah C and Jess C. Congratulations again on another fantastic effort. You did yourself and your school extremely proud! Mrs Primavera

NO NUTS We have children attending our school with severe (life threatening) peanut allergies.
As always, we are concerned for the safety of our children, and ask everyone to avoid bringing any items that may contain peanuts to school, as the smallest amount of peanut or proteins of peanuts on benches,
etc., can affect an allergic child. Whilst I can appreciate that there may be children who just love to have their peanut butter sandwiches or bars, I am sure that if it was your child with the allergy, you would also
appreciate people helping out in this way

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK All Parents and Friends visiting St Marys must have a ‘Working With Children Check’. These are available FREE to volunteers on line.
Child Safety Code of Conduct
St Mary’s endeavours to create and maintain an environment where child safety is paramount and there is zero tolerance of any form of child abuse.
What is the purpose of a child safety code of conduct? A child safety code of conduct is intended to promote child safety in the school environment. A child safety code of conduct spells out professional boundaries and acceptable and unacceptable adult/child relationships and behaviour.
It should be unambiguous, widely disseminated and supported by supervision, professional development and training. A child safety code of conduct helps schools, staff and volunteers to raise behavioural issues. It provides a reference point for discussion when there may otherwise be confusion, uncertainty, or a lack of confidence about boundaries for appropriate behaviour with children. The code specifies behaviour unacceptable for a professional relationship between a teacher and a student. All parents, relatives and caregivers attending St Mary’s Primary School to help within the classroom must hold a
current Working with Children Check and must have read and signed the Code of Conduct. Please go to our website for more information.
CHILD SAFETY CODE OF CONDUCTS CAN BE COMPLETED AT THE OFFICE
