On Wednesday, 21st March, Nambucca Heads High School celebrated Harmony Day with some great food, music and mural painting.
Harmony Day is a NATIONAL day celebrating a vibrant and multicultural country - from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.
Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
Harmony day is held every year on 21st March. This day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Since 1999, more than 70,000 Harmony Day events have been held in schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Community
At last Tuesday’s assembly we acknowledged the National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence (NDA) which was held around Australia last Friday. At the assembly I spoke to all students
about bullying and we watched two short clips about how everyone can address bullying and put a
stop to it. Please watch the following clips and have a discussion with everyone in the family about
bullying.
Ask your child what is their superpower when it comes to stopping bullying?
https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/resources/videos/pages/videoplayer.aspx?VideoID=183 https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/resources/videos/pages/videoplayer.aspx?VideoID=173
At the assembly I also spoke about the Stymie program we have at school and how this is a great
platform for all students to report incidents anonymously to the school that are worrying them. The following link is from the
Today show last Sunday about the Stymie program: https://www.9now.com.au/today/2018/clip-cjew8scak00170gpciexag7ln
Please remind your child that they can utilise Stymie via the following link: https://www.stymie.com.au/
I look forward to meeting all of the Year 7 parents at our Year 7 Breakfast on Wednesday 4th April from 8am.
As always please contact me at the school if you have any questions in regards to your child’s education at NHHS.
My highlight of the fortnight: Attending the unveiling of the mural painted by ex-NHHS student Keiana Bateman (next time you are in the front office
please look at the football boots that are on display that were also painted by Keiana when she was in Year 12) at
Nambucca Heads Public School.
The mural has been developed to celebrate Aboriginal culture in our community. The painting tells the story of Baga Baga,
which is the story of how the Nambucca River
was created. This is also known as "The Crooked
Knee" where the giant man fell. The mural is
seven metres wide and four metres tall!
A special thanks to NHHS students who danced
at the unveiling: Octavia Hand, Gloria Hand, Marli
Bateman, Leanna Brown, Chelsea Smith, Taylah
Cross, Jordja Jarrett-Duroux, Tillarna Taylor,
Cheyenne Baker, Jerrai Dahlstrom, James
Donovan, Jonah Edwards and Marley Dahlstrom.
Well done to Cheyenne and Leanna who also did
‘Welcome to Country’ for the event.

Year 10
All students in Year 10 are being asked to organise their work experience for Term 4 NOW. Pupils need to submit their paperwork for the first week (26th – 30th November) by the end of this term. Paperwork for the second week (3rd – 7th December) is due the end of Term 2. Work experience is a very important part of a student’s time at school. They may decide to pursue a career seriously or even get offered part-time or full-time employment. Parents please support this program by ensuring that your child is actively organising their experience as soon as possible.
Also those students who are wishing to attend the Sydney Careers Excursion (24th – 28th June) have received their initial information outlining cost and the program as well as permission notes . Parents/Carers and students also need to be aware of the behaviour, attendance and uniform requirements. There will be information regarding these requirements included with the information package.
The Careers Expo for Year 10 students will be held in May. This activity provides students with the opportunity to meet and speak with many different Training Organisations and employers.

This excursion is held at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus in July. Entry is free and ALL Year 12 students are encouraged to attend this informative event.
Applying to University
The application process for university entry for 2018 opens in early August of each year and closes late September. University applications are overseen by different organisations depending upon the location of the university. For NSW universities UAC http://www.uac.edu.au/ is the governing body and QTAC http://www.qtac.edu.au/ for Queensland based universities. Most courses require students to be eligible for an ATAR as part of their senior school studies. Applications must be submitted online. Approximate cost to apply is approximately $40 per person. UAC and QTAC course hard copy guides will be available to students in early August.
Applying to TAFE / Smart & Skilled
Many students will consider a vocational pathway upon completion of their HSC. North Coast Institute of TAFE offers a wide range of course options with flexible delivery. TAFE course booklets are available to students in late August and full details are provided on the TAFE website http://northcoast.tafensw.edu.au/Pages/Default.aspx TAFE prefers applications for 2019 study to be submitted by the end of October 2018. The Smart and Skilled government supported program offers heavily subsidised places in a range of courses (Cert II to Advanced Diploma level). These courses may be offered at TAFEs and Private providers. Students have been emailed links to the website.
What Next?
Year 12 students will be surveyed and interviewed throughout 2018 to gain a better understanding of their post-school intentions. Students and parents are welcome to make an appointment at any time with the Careers Adviser and take the initiative in planning their future.
Should you have any questions about any career related aspect for your son / daughter, please feel free to contact me on 02 6568 6777. Additional information can also be obtained from the School Careers Website www.nhhscareers.com with parents able to access lots of information without the need to register.
Year 11
Year 11 should now be getting an understanding of what senior study involves. They have finalised their subjects and should getting a study routine organised. Pupils studying a TVET Course will be able to adjust their study program (for most students this will involve “dropping” two units or one subject).
The Queensland University excursion will be on the 29th - 30th November. This is part of the preparation for making decisions regarding post school options for pupils considering going to universities.
