The Perfect Party MenuBy Tresa Erickson

The holiday season has arrived, and the to-do lists arestacking up. Youve got decorating to do, gifts to buy andparties to plan. Better get a move on fast. Here are somefactors to consider to help you plan the perfect party menuevery time.

What? What kind of party are you having? A dinner party? A

fondue party? A cocktail party? A formal dinner party for 12will require a larger menu than a fondue or cocktail partyfor 15. You will need a full-course meal for the dinner party, whereas you may opt for a few hors-doeuvre trays for thefondue or cocktail party.

Why?Why are you having the party? To gather everyone

together to celebrate the holidays? To celebrate theholidays and an anniversary, birthday or some other

special event? The more elaborate the occasion, the moreelaborate the menu may need to be. A combo holiday-promotion celebration, for example, might call for a cakeand champagne in addition to several hors-doeuvres.

Who?Whom are you inviting to the party? Everyone you

know? A select few? The more people you invite, the widerthe menu selection should be to cater to a number oftastes. If you are inviting just a few friends, you shouldknow their likes and dislikes and be able to cater yourmenu to that. Make sure you take any special dietaryneeds of your guests into accommodation. If someone is avegetarian, diabetic or has food allergies, for example, youwill want to account for that in the menu.

When? When are you having the party? Late morning? Mid-

afternoon? Early evening? The time will dictate the typeand amount of food you serve. A late morning party mightcall for a full brunch buffet, whereas a mid-afternoon tea

party might call for a few pots of tea and a sheetcake.Where?Where are you having the party? At home? Somewhere

else? Home parties may require you to plan the menu, whereas a party elsewhere might limit the menu planningor eliminate it altogether. If you are having a get-togetherat the local bowling alley, for example, you might be ableto order several pizzas for everyone to munch on andleave it at that.

How?How will the menu be prepared? Will you be doing all of

the work yourself or bringing in someone to do it for you?Depending upon where the party is located, you may beable to save yourself some time and effort by having thefood catered. It may cost you more, but it may permit youto have a bigger spread.

You may serve whatever you want at your holidayparty. Just make sure you take the factors above intoconsideration and your menu suits the tone of the party. While cookies and milk might satisfy a bunch of kids at aholiday party late in the afternoon, it wont work for a tableof adults looking forward to a late night holiday dinner.

    How To Cook A Turkey

We go to our Grandpas house. Um and he has a turkeyand I dont know where he got it. Um, you cook the turkeyon Id say about only 400 degrees for about a half an hour.We have to put the stuffing in it. Then we cook thepotatoes and cut up the turkey, cook the corn and opencranberry sauce, and then we eat! Usually us kids go outwith our cousins and we usually play hide and seek in thetrees. No one can find us!Bryce Gifford

    Mrs. Killes Class

We go buy our turkey, I think its Walmart. Then we take ithome, cook the turkey on our grill at 300 degrees for 20minutes. We cook our stuffing in the oven for five minutes. And then, we cook our potatoes on the grill for fiveminutes. We all eat together and then we go outside andhave a campfire!Zachary BlauserMrs. Killes Class

I think my Grandpa got the turkey at a store. He cooked it(I dont really know how because I was playing). We had Ithink jello for dessert. Then I went back to playing.Angel RodriguezMrs. Killes Class

    Gift-GivingAlternativesBy Tresa Erickson

Gift giving is a time-honored tradition, but howdo you keep it affordablewith a great number ofpeople? If you have a ratherlarge family and buying giftsfor each and every person isout of the question, whatcan you do? You can have agift exchange, and there arevarious ways you can goabout it. Here are a few ofthe more common ones.

Be a Secret Santa -Secret Santa exchangestake place over a series ofdays. Participants drawnames, purchase severalsmall gifts for the personwhose name they draw andarrange for a gift to bedelivered daily in secret.Gifts may be themed, andthe identities of the SecretSantas are revealed on thelast day of the exchange.

Draw Names - Namedrawings are fairlystraightforward. You set upa time for the drawing to

take place, throw the namesof everyone participatinginto a hat and have eachperson draw a name andtuck it away. This is theperson for whom they mustpurchase a gift. Parents ofyoung kids are responsiblefor purchasing a gift for thenames drawn by the kids. The actual gift exchange

takes place later at the date, time and place designated.

Give Back - Charityexchanges work well forindividuals who dont needanything and would rathergive back something to theircommunity. Participantswrite down the name of theirfavorite charity and insert itinto a hat. They then draw aname of a charity from thehat and pledge to support itwith either a monetarydonation or volunteer work.

Go the White ElephantWay - White elephant giftsare generally inexpensive, sometimes funny, sometimes used gifts. Foryour white elephant giftexchange, you may select atheme and price limit, suchas gag gifts for under $5 orodd items from home.Participants must then wrapa gift that meets thosespecifications and bring it tothe exchange. The personfirst in line selects a gift, unwraps it and holds it uphigh for everyone to see.The next person selects agift, unwraps it and either

keeps the gift or swaps it forthe other persons gift. Thefun continues until everyonehas a gift. Exchanges maybe limited to a certainnumber, and participantsmay be given one finalopportunity to swap gifts ifthey so desire.

Regift - Regift exchangesusually take place after the

holidays and requireparticipants to bringsomething they received butdo not want or need.Participants then get toswap what they dont wantfor something that they do.

Any gifts not selected maybe donated to charity.

None of these ideasappeal to you? No problem.Design your own giftexchange and theme itanyway you want. Themescan run the gamut fromboard games to cookinggadgets to pet supplies. Itsyour choice, and with onlyone gift required instead ofseveral, participants aresure to have fun whatever isinvolved.

Great Gift Ideas For SeniorsExchanging gifts has become synonymous with the

holiday season. Family members exchange gifts with oneanother, men and women trade gifts and greeting cardswith their coworkers and students participate in grab baggift exchanges in the classroom.

Giving gifts is such a big part of the holiday season thatshoppers may run out of gift ideas before they havecrossed everyone off their lists. For example, it might notbe easy to find the perfect gift for the senior citizen on yourholiday shopping list. Seniors might not be up-to-date onthe latest gadgets or might have downgraded from a hometo a more manageable living arrangement, so knickknacksor decorative items for the home may not be too practical, either. The following are a few tips for gifting seniors thisholiday season.

    * Warm things up. As men and women age, manydevelop medical conditions that require medication.Medications like blood thinners can make seniors feel thecold more than others, so a gift that can keep seniorswarm through the winter can make a great gift. A thick

wool sweater or a fleece blanket is both practical andthoughtful.* Open a senior's eyes to e-readers. Many seniors find

that maintaining a household is simply too much workonce all the kids have grown up and moved out. As aresult, many move from private homes into apartmentcomplexes geared to the senior set or even into assistedliving facilities that make it easier to deal with the dailydemands of life. When seniors make such a move, theysacrifice space for convenience. Personal libraries may nolonger be possible or practical, but an e-reader such asAmazon's Kindle or the Nook from Barnes and Nobleallows seniors to store their favorite books in one smalland convenient place.

    * Give the lap of luxury. Many seniors are on fixed

incomes, which greatly limit how much disposable incomethey have to treat themselves to something nice. Butseniors still love a trip to the spa or a round of golf just as

much as their younger counterparts. Savvy shoppersknow that deals can be had on such luxuries, and it justtakes a little patience and research. Sign up for a servicelike Groupon to gain access to exclusive discount offersto a variety of luxury offerings, including spa treatments, cruise vacations and rounds of golf. Signing up is free andeasy, and you might just find a deal that makes a senior'sholiday season.

    * Go healthy. Many men and women embrace ahealthier lifestyle as they age. Seniors who might havebeen too busy raising a family to focus on their own healthare typically encouraged by their physicians to exerciseand embrace healthier eating habits. Gift-givers can helpseniors on their quests to become healthier by buyingthem a membership to a local fitness club, many of whichprovide classes designed specifically for seniors. Fitnessclubs typically offer discounted memberships to seniors, who might even be eligible for rebates from their healthinsurance providers if they meet established attendance

requirements. Seniors who suffer from arthritis mightbenefit from a membership at a nearby yoga center.* Give the gift of communication. Sometimes the best giftis the simplest gift. Seniors love to speak with theirchildren and grandchildren, so why not give the gift ofcommunication? If you haven't already, alter your cellularphone plan to a family plan that gives seniors unlimitedminutes when calling family members so they can speakto their grandkids as often as possible. You can even gothe extra mile and upgrade a senior's computer so he orshe has access to instant messaging andvideoconferencing services such Skype, allowingseniors to see just how fast their grandchildren aregrowing even if those youngsters are on the other side ofthe country.

Time For A NewTraditionBy Ann Bare

When is it time to movebeyond traditionFor a while you and

your spouse enjoyed theChristmas holidays at yourparents-first at one set of in-laws, then the other-usuallyboth on Christmas Day. Itdidnt matter that the two ofyou were loading up giftsand rushing from one houseto another. The importantissue was to spend equaltime at both homes-and not

offend either set of parents.(Pity those poor youngcouples who had divorcedor separated parents andhad four different homesbeckoning, sometimes de-manding, their attendance.)

Then came the baby, then the babies-and cele-brating the day becameeven more complicated. Thegifts and paraphernalia totransport increased, but thesize of the vehicle didnt. In-law demands and expecta-tions didnt shift, but happyattitudes certainly did. Whatwas once a look-forward-toexperience became adreaded, hassle-filled ex-pedition.

When time andemotions are stretchedbeyond the breaking point, something (or someone)has to give. Maybe whathas to give is theunderstanding of tradition.

Memories of havingthe family together and eachopening just-what-I-wantedpresents is a Rockwellianconcept that most savor-orat least dream of. But whoactually remembers whatgifts were exchanged?

Arent the warm memoriesusually of feelings-stability,appreciation, consideration,

encouragement, gratitude, love? Remember when yougave me that huge graysweater, and I couldntsincerely say thank you? Ifelt awkward and you knewit. You quickly told me thatyou just picked up the firstsweater you saw and hopedId return it for the one Iwanted. You really unde-rstood. Thanks.?

The question thenbecomes, is creating apositive memory a bettertradition to establish thanhaving a family assembly ona specific day? Is watchingyour children excitedly play

with their new toys of morelasting value than gettingyour green bean casseroleto Mom and Dads house ontime?

How and when do youestablish your new, personaltradition that accommodatesyour familys schedule? When the stress of meetingothers expectations is tak-ing a toll on your personalsanity, its time to reconsiderwhat is really important inyour life. When you face thefacts that everyone is notalways going to be happywith your decisions andpleasing others is an unat-tainable goal, you are finallyready to decide what is bestfor you and your family.

Have at it. Pick a daywhen you can celebrate withyour extended family andenjoy that day. It may be aday or two before (or after)Christmas. Whichever dayyou choose, remember thepositive events of that day.Create your own new tra-ditions with activities thatyou can annually enjoy withyour children and your child-rens children. (Caution:

When your children want totake off with some of theirown traditions many yearsfrom now, remember howfreeing it was when you leftthe have-tos and ought-tosimposed by your family.)

As you plan yourholiday celebration, keep thetradition of warm mem-oriesand feel-good activi-ties.Look at the pictures of peoplewho were genuinely appreci-ative and getting along witheach other. And enjoy thosedays (not just one particularday) when Christmas was

    truly celebrated.

gift, a handmade gift can tell a host that you were thankfulto be invited to an event. If you prepare a signature dish, whip it up and bring it along. Its also easy to create somesimple garnishes and package them in a decorative tin or

jar. Think homemade salsa or a homemade chocolateganache sauce.

*Breakfast in bed: Enable the host and hostess tosleep in the next day by having breakfast all ready to go.Put together a basket or tray with individual bottles of juice, packets of tea or instant coffee and some gourmet muffinsor scones. Add a jar of jam and some small spreadingknives so breakfast can be served with minimal hassle.

There are many gifts that can treat a host or hostess tosomething special as a token of appre-ciation for openingup his or her home during the holiday season.

Gifts For Your Holiday Host Or HostessEntertaining is part of the holiday season when hosts

and hostesses open their homes to many friends andfamily to celebrate a time of giving and togetherness.Gifts for the host and/or hostess can show appreciationto the men and women who go above and beyond.

A hostess gift can be as simple or as extravagant asyour budget allows. Many people tend to gravitate towardfood-related gifts because of their simplicity and the ideathat they can be served at the gathering of friends andfamily. But conventional etiquette suggests that hosts andhostesses are not obligated to serve the beverages orfoods guests bring and should not feel ashamed toreserve them for their own private use. So guests maywant to think outside the box when gifting holiday hoststhis season. Here are some ideas to consider.

*Flavored dipping oils: Herb-infused oils lend adifferent taste to prepared foods and also can be used asa bread garnish in lieu of butter. Pair a flavored oil with aloaf of gourmet bread and include a decorative, shallowbowl that can be used for the oil.

*Wine caddy: The number of restaurants that enableyou to bring your own beverages has multiplied. Thismeans that diners can benefit from practical ways totransport their favorite vintage from home to the table.Wine caddies and holders come in many differentdesigns, from some that resemble a womans clutch tosuitcase-inspired designs.

*After-dinner treat: Put together a basket of foods thatcan be served after dinner. A citrusy palate cleanser, likelemon-infused butter cookies, fresh fruit and a sparklingbeverage may fit the bill perfectly. Specialty stores oftensell gift towers this time of year that package togetherdelicious treats.

*Scented sugars: Oil isnt the only condiment that canbe infused with aroma and additional flavor. Purchasecanning jars and fill them with your favorite brand ofgranulated sugar. Add flavorings, such as cinnamonsticks, vanilla beans, mint leaves, or hazelnuts, to givefoods a subtle essence of flavor. Tie a bow around the jarand present it as a thoughtful gift.

*Garden gift basket: Although the cold weather ishere, a garden gift basket can still make a welcome gift.Include flower seeds, fertilizer sticks, a garden trowel, apair of gardening gloves and any other essentials youcan think of.

*Spa gift certificate: Entertaining is hard work and ahostess may enjoy some time to recuperate once theholidays have come and gone. A gift certificate for a facialor massage will provide at least an hour of pampering.

*Homemade treats: Much in the way a handwrittenthank-you note can convey how much you appreciate a

    Do Good ByDonating Older Gifts

The holiday season isone firmly ensconced in thetradition of exchanging gifts. To address storage issues, some families choose tomake charitable donationsof some of their past holidayfinery in preparation for thearrival of new gifts andgoodies.

The average person hasmany belongings he or shemay not need. According tothe Self Storage

Association, there are 2.3billion square feet

designated to self-storagespace in the United States, and one out of every 10households in the countryrents a unit. Many financialanalysts say that the self-storage industry isessentially recession-proof.Thats because once aperson moves items intostorage, theyre not likely tomove it out anytime soon.

Many of the itemsrelegated to self-storageunits across the nationcould be holiday gifts fromyears past. But rather thanstore items that will neversee the light of day, why not

help a good cause anddonate such items tocharity?

Make it a tradition.Families can make donatingitems prior to the holidays atradition so that it issomething that everyoneanticipates and looksforward to.

Much as you woulddecorate the home or shopfor fancy holiday clothing, you can set aside a day forsorting through infrequentlyused items and preparingthem for donation. Doing socan teach children thebenefits of generosity, which

    often goes hand-in-handwith the season.

Work with anorganization. There arecertain organizations thatgather used or new toys andother items to give to theless fortunate. Begin withchurches and synagoguesand inquire if they sponsoror host a collection program.Schools also may hold itemswaps to help raise moneyfor parent-teacher associa-tions or to donate tocharities.

If you cannot find anorganization that serves asthe middleman fordonations, take it uponyourself to solicit safehouses, hospitals, veterangroups and more to see ifthey will accept your items.

Set limits on new gifts.Encourage family membersto give back while gifting aswell. While one or two newitems will be appreciated, you may want to specify thatdonations to charities thatyou support, or helping tofund extracurricularactivities, is yourpreference.

Organize storagespaces. Once clutter hasbeen removed, use thisopportunity to install newcloset organizers, storagebins, shelving, and anyother methods oforganization that you prefer.Sort and categorize existingtoys and items so that newones can be added neatly.

Involve children in thedonation process. Whendonating items, bring thekids along so they can seehow their former toys and

books will be put to use byother children who may nothave the same advantages. It will serve as a goodlesson and may helpchildren walk away with aheartwarming experience.

    Did You Know?Many area shopping

malls offer some method oftransportation between tour-ist sites or transportationhubs. For shoppers lookingto avoid the hassles of find-ing a parking space at mallsand shopping centers, shuttle buses may be theanswer.

For example, the Mall ofAmerica in Minneapolisoffers free shuttle servicebetween the stores andaround 50 hotels in thevicinity. To investigate thepossibilities of transportation

to a mall near you, visit themalls information kioskduring your next visit andinquire as to whether ashuttle van or bus is avail-able.

Also, you may contactlocal bus companies to findout whether there is a freeor paid shuttle available.Typically, these will bestationed at park-and-ridesor in large parking lots. Thebus will pick up and deliveryou to the same location.

Seniors may be entitledto complementary busing tothe mall courtesy ofmunicipal senior busing

    systems or accessible rideprograms.

Take The Hassle Out Of Gift ReturnsThe magic of the holiday season is hard to replicate.

Gatherings with friends and family members can putsmiles on many peoples faces, especially for those peoplewho only see their loved ones once a year.

But the smiles and laughter may dim when faced withthe prospect of returning unwanted gifts. Few peoplehavent had to return a holiday gift once or twice in theirlifetimes. In fact, a survey from Consumer Reportsindicates that 1 in 5 Americans will return a holiday presentthis year, while retail merchants expect about 10 percent ofall holiday purchases to be returned.

Part of the difficulty of returning items is a result ofstores cracking down on merchandise fraud. While thereare scores of honest customers simply looking toexchange that paw print set of pajamas for something alittle more stylish, there are plenty others who areinterested in taking advantage of the holiday season toreturn items that may have been used, such as a cocktaildress that livened up Christmas festivities just as much asthe spiked egg nog, only to be returned December 26.With the desire to curtail fraud, retailers have tightened thereigns on return policies.

Keeping this in mind and being prepared for aconversation with a stores customer service employee canmake the return process go more smoothly.

Cut down on the stress and hassle of holiday returns byknowing store policies and only returning items that areunopened and unused. And whenever possible, bring areceipt, even if its just a gift receipt.

bag so youll always have a snack on hand to curb anycraving.

Indulge on occasion: The good news? You canindulge a little when it comes to dark chocolate. I eat darkchocolate every day for many reasons, Sass says. Darkchocolate contains antioxidants - such as those found inred wine and tea - which can boost brain activity, lowerblood pressure, improve circulation and reduce stresslevels.

Separate the physical and emotional: Wesometimes tend to mistake emotions for hunger, and ourmoods often determine our food choices. Keeping a fooddiary to record all snacks and meals, along with feelingsand the signs of hunger or fullness, helps identify eatingpatterns.

To help make your snack choices even easier, tryThe Almond Snack Generator at www.almondboard.com/snackgenerator, a handy new tool that lets you choosesnack pairings based on your cravings, so you can snackanytime, anywhere.

Roasted Almonds withCoriander, Chili and Olive Oil

    Yield: 8 servings

    1/2 tablespoon olive oil1 1/2 cups blanched

    almonds1 teaspoon coriander

seeds, crushed1 to 3 small dried red chili peppers2 generous pinches of sea salt

--Add olive oil and almonds to hot saut pan.--Saut and toast almonds until golden brown, shaking

pan regularly to color them evenly and accentuatetheir nutty flavor.

--Crumble in coriander and chili to taste, then add sea salt.--Toss over and serve hot on large plate. These are perfect

    as a pre-dinner snack.Conquer Cravings with a Snack

    Plan of Attack

(Family Features) Its a myth that snacking in

between meals is a no-no. In reality, its a healthy habit tokeep hunger at bay without sacrificing taste or nutrition, according to Cynthia Sass, registered dietitian and authorof the New York Times bestselling book S.A.S.S! YourselfSlim: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds and Lose Inches.

Choosing wholesome snacks is the smartest way toget through the day, Sass says. Healthy snacking helpsmanage cravings while satisfying hunger and providing thebody with important nutrients.

Planning your snacks is just as important as planningyour meals, Sass says. Youre far less likely to overeat ormiss out on important nutrients when you satisfy cravingswith a snack youve considered in advance.

Sass recommends plant-based snacks to help slowdigestion and absorption, which keeps you fuller longerand better controls blood sugar and insulin levels. I like topair a handful of almonds with apples, cheese or yogurt tohelp keep my metabolism and energy levels up andstabilized, she says.

To snack smart, follow these tips from Sass:

Stick to a schedule: Going long stretches withoutfood deprives your body of the fuel it needs and slowsyour metabolism. Have simple snacks on hand so youdont get too hungry and become ravenous later. Almondswith cheese, creamy almond butter and apple slices andyogurt topped with fruit and sprinkled with cinnamon are afew of my go-to snacks, says Sass.

Create portable favorites in case of emergency: Weall have days when life doesnt go according to plan.Having portable snack options at the ready helps preventcrashing or giving in to poor food choices. Pack a zip-topplastic bag or container with a handful of wholesomesnacks - such as dried fruit - to keep in your purse or gym

Did You Know? Many Christmas traditions are older than some

celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up aChristmas tree, for example, dates back to the days beforeChristmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lightswere invented and even before electricity was discovered,

people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree.As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket ofwater next to the tree in the case of fire. As if fire wasntenough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made fromstrips of silver and even lead -- something that is nowknown to be a health hazard to adults and children alike.

Although weve come a long way since candles and lead, even now trees that are overly dry and decorated withlights that have frayed wires can just as easily lead tofires. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard forchildren and pets. It has long been thought that poinsettiasare poisonous to people and animals. While there is sometoxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion ofhundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plants poison.

(Family Features) Turkey and stuffing are ThanksgivingDay must-haves, but not everyone makes them the sameway. When it comes to stuffing, where you live might makea difference in how you make it.

According to a new survey by Mrs. Cubbisons Kitchenin Los Angeles, celery and onions top the ingredients list, then regional differences come into play:

    * People in the Northeast and West are more likely toadd carrots and sausage.

    * 70 percent of people in the South and 60 percent ofpeople in the Northeast said they like to cook stuffing in acasserole dish.

    * 58 percent of people in the West and 45 percent ofpeople in the Midwest said they prefer to cook it in thebird.

While traditional Thanksgiving dishes are preferred inmost regions, about one in five families say they nowconsider special diets when preparing their menu includinggluten-free, vegetarian, diabetic and kosher options:

    * Gluten-free and vegetarian choices are popular in theWest.* The South and Midwest offer items for those who are

diabetic.* The Northeast and South offer lactose-free and

kosher dishes. The survey also found that when asked which

Thanksgiving dishes are handed down from previousfamily generations, stuffing was by far the mostimportant. But the term for this dish differed depending onlocale - Southerners refer to the dish as dressing, whilepeople in the East, Midwest and West say stuffing.

    Dollar Stretcher Tips

Party TableclothsThe cost of paper tablecloths for parties is pretty high. I

learned that a better alternative is to get twin bed sized sheetsfrom a thrift store and save them until the occasion arises.White is always good, but for holidays, there are pastelsavailable, usually at the same low price. After the party, theycan be washed and saved for the next big event. -PL

Creative Gift Card UsesAs a prize, I received a gift card to one of those

coffeehouses that I dont frequent. I used the gift card tobuy two smaller cards for teacher gifts! I also used a giftcard from Applebees that I had $8 left on to purchase a giftfor someone in the amount of $15. -NY

Before You Get a PetDoes your child want a pet? How do you try one out to

see if your child is ready for the responsibility before youbuy one? First, volunteer to pet-sit a school pet like ahamster over a holiday weekend. Have the pet-desperate

child feed it, water it, and clean the cage. Return the petwhen school starts and determine whether the child isresponsible. Or offer to pet-sit pets for friends going onvacation. Have your child do most of the work undersupervision. -Tamara W.
