2018 AnnuAl RepoRt
Dear Friends,
Every year at this time, we enthusiastically look forward to the opportunity of sharing with you the Omega House Annual Report. As one of our supporters, you know that we’ve always been committed to providing the highest quality of end-of-life care for our residents and families. We send you our 2018 annual report publication as a personal thank you for your support. Your generosity helped provide care to 64 residents in 2018 and over 570 residents served since we opened in 2005.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to all the donors listed in this report, to our board of directors, staff members, volunteers and our residents and their families who make Omega House a unique treasure in our community. Our well-trained staff and dedicated volunteers work in concert with area hospice agencies to provide physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to our residents in need at a special time in life when caring matters most.
With your support, we remain committed to providing compassionate end-of-life care to future families. Please consider a gift of support to ensure that anyone needing a gift of home will not be turned away.
Sincerely,
Michael LutzExecutive Director

GROWTHOmega House is pleased to provide this 2018 Annual Report to our community. It is an important part of our goal to be transparent about our work in the service of this community.
Omega House is a local resource, owned by the community and serving all, regardless of income. In a time when corporations dominate the healthcare landscape and healthcare cost is a national issue, this organization is unique.
We’re here to provide a home-like environment with professional care to people with a terminal illness. We continually work to improve and deepen our services in furtherance of that mission.
In this report, you will read about two such services, respite care and grieving support. You will learn about the Gerald Vairo Fund, a financial asset dedicated to providing a defined amount of free care to residents with limited income. This report also provides information on our patient care statistics and finances, and we honor our many community-minded donors.
The generosity of the community is a key factor in the success of Omega House. On behalf of the staff, volunteers and board of directors, I extend our gratitude to those who support Omega House, and we ask that you continue to include Omega House in your charitable giving. Please also consider leaving a legacy of compassion by including Omega House in your will or estate plans.
I am humbled by the generosity of our community. Thank you, again, for your continuing support of Omega House.

2018Volunteer of the Year
is presented to
Mark Cinelli…for his years of volunteer service
to Omega House.
Volunteering has been a part of Mark’s life for a long time. It first
began when he moved to Chicago in the late 70’s and joined a suicide hot-line and volunteered at the local park district while working in Chicago. When he returned to the Copper Country in the 80’s, he started volunteering at the holiday meals sponsored by Little Broth-ers Friends of the Elderly. He was hired by Little Brothers shortly after that and became involved in recruiting and direct-ing their fundraising group.
Mark retired from Little Brothers after 28 years and continues to participate in their Friendly Visiting and Medical Transportation programs. Mark is also a driver for the VFW’s transport van that helps veterans get to the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain.
At Omega House, Mark handles many of our maintenance needs by fixing just about anything we ask him to do. Mark comes in mainly once per week to check on any needed repairs. We all thank Mark for his skills and volunteer knowledge. His dedication to Omega House is extremely appreciated.

Why Volunteer?People choose to volunteer for a
variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.
Community members who volunteer at Omega House continue to be vital to our work. In 2018 our volunteers offered nearly 2500 hours of support. That support comes in many ways and
includes visiting, reading, clerical duties and preparing meals to name a few. Would you like to be a volunteer at Omega House? For more information on the many meaningful volunteer opportunities we can offer you, call Peggy Hill, our volunteer coordinator at 906-482-4438 or go to our website at www.omega-house.org, click the volunteer tab and complete a volunteer application.

In August of 2017, Omega House began offering Respite Care services to our community. Respite care provides caregivers
a temporary rest from caregiving, while the person needing the care continues to receive care in a safe environment. Using respite services can support and strengthen your ability to be a caregiver.
In 2018 our respite room was utilized for 104 days by ten different families who are caring for a loved one at home. Are you caring for someone at home and have an unplanned situation? Maybe you just need a break from caregiving or you’ve put off that vacation of a lifetime far too long. These situations can create a need for immediate care by an alternative caregiver.
If you are interested in Respite Care services through Omega House, please call us at 906-482-4438 to schedule your appointment today.

Kentucky Derby Charity Ball
In April of 2018, the Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club and Circle K group
of Michigan Tech University held their annual charity ball. This year’s proceeds from the Kentucky Derby themed charity ball were donated to Omega House. The group donated many items from our wish list and over $400 in cash. Attendees enjoyed dancing, performances by the Swing Team and the MTU Dance Team, a live band, a DJ and hors d’oeuvres.
finlandia University Student nurses association raises funds for omega house
Finlandia University Student Nurses Association (FUSNA) held a pancake breakfast in the spring of 2018 at Gloria Dei Lutheran
Church in Hancock. This annual event has been dedicated to Omega House since 2002 and over that time this group of students has raised over $24,000. “They believe in our mission of providing end-of-life care to anyone in need regardless of their financial situation and we are so proud to work with this fine group of students,” says Mike Lutz, Executive Director of Omega House.
Support from atV riders
In June of 2018, over 100 ATV riders showed their support in the 4th
annual South Loop ATV Ride for Omega House. This full day event raised $2,900 for the Omega House mission and since its inception, this group has raised over $6,000. Many local businesses donate prizes and food to support this event which continues to get bigger each year.

art heart Celebrity Charity event raises $2,700 for omega house
The first annual Art Heart Celebrity Charity Event, a geektastic mini convention to celebrate art in comics and games took place. The
event was co-created by Shana Porteen (owner of Black Ice Comics), Patricia Summersett, Pamela Kotila, and Travis Wakeham. All proceeds from the event, which totaled $2,700, were presented to Omega House.
In presenting the check to Mike Lutz, Shana Porteen said “Art Heart is a great event for the whole community. It brought people together to share their passion for comics and gaming in support of Omega House,” Mike Lutz said. “This is another example of our community and businesses coming together and supporting our important mission of caring for residents facing a terminal diagnosis. Successful fundraising events take time and organization. The success of Art Heart is clear evidence of their phenomenal effort and hard work.

Marie (Mary) DuLong Geshel was born in 1934. She was
born and raised in Lake Linden. Mary was well known to both the teachers and students at Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools from the 1970s into the 1990s. She started as an office assistant. After receiving a degree in Child Development, she taught and managed their preschool program. She loved spending time with her preschoolers, as well as her grandchildren, three of whom attended her program.
Mary had a strong sense of community. From the late 1960s until the 1990s, in addition to her position at LLHS, she played an active role as catechism teacher, choir member, church council member, lector, and Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Lake Linden.
In June of 1968, just weeks before a miners’ strike would close the local mines, Mary’s husband Ralph died in a mining accident at C & H in Calumet. She became a single mom of two young boys. Mary wanted her children to experience a better life. To earn extra money, she took on house cleaning jobs, became a maid at hotels, and even started her own catering business from her home.
She continued with these other jobs while working in the Lake Linden School system.
The extra funds also came in handy to pay for another passion, travel. Mary travelled the country, mostly by car, from her home to California, Canada, Florida, and New York. Her traveling companions were her young children, and sometimes friends. After her sons were grown, she would convince one friend or another to drive with her to Quebec, Detroit, Denver, Newport
Richie, or whatever destination she decided she wanted to see. Highlights of her travels included trips to Hawaii, Italy, and The Vatican to see Pope John Paul II.
Another of Mary’s passions were the Detroit Red Wings. She would watch as many games as she could. Mary spoke often of the time that she and her friend Shirley were guests of Mickey Redmond. After the game, they had dinner with Mickey and his wife, and then were houseguests at Mickey’s home during their stay.
Her independent streak is exemplified in a story from a dozen, or so, years ago. Mary wanted to go on a religious retreat to Alabama. She was unsuccessful in convincing her family to drive her to the retreat. So, she packed her bags and convinced her lifelong friend “Grandma Gin,” who was also in her eighties, to go on the trip with her. It was not until they were on the road that she called her family to let them know she was driving to Alabama. As usual she came home with several stories to tell of her travels.
Mary believed strongly in the mission of Omega House. She contributed often and persuaded her friends to do the same. In early 2018, Mary fell ill. She passed away comfortably at Omega House, with her family by her side, on February 4th, 2018. The family was extremely thankful for such a wonderful facility and the compassionate care she received. She is dearly missed by her family, including her two sons, seven
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, her friends and her many preschool graduates.

Community Grief supportGrieving is the most difficult life experience that
we all share. We grieve many deaths of loved family, friends, and pets, and we grieve layers upon layers of other life losses that need our attention too. Even though grief is such an important part of life, compassionate support can be difficult to find. Myths of grief stages and timelines also cloud how we grieve and how we comfort others—none of these persistent myths adequately explain our diverse and individual expressions and feelings. Grief has no timeline and no agenda. Keeping love and relationships at the center of our grief offers us solace and honors our loved ones.
“Grieving is Love” is the compassionate message at the heart of the new Omega House Community Grief Support program, which includes grief resources, counseling, and group support for all community members. The Omega House board of directors initiated this program in their Strategic Vision 2020. The board’s Community Grief Support committee, comprised of counseling, clergy, grief, and hospice experts, is focused on building a special program to address our community needs.
Omega House started the grief program in 2017 with two workshops about grieving during the
holidays. Then in early 2018, an Omega House social work intern, trained in grief therapy, began offering free grief and loss counseling to community members. Future plans include a monthly grief support group and grief in-service workshops at local organizations and businesses.
Recognizing the need for grief resources, the Rice Memorial Clinic Foundation recently donated $6,450 to Omega House. With this continued and growing support, we plan to expand the program to help teenagers deal with grief and loss and help community members grieve traumatic deaths such as suicide and the opioid epidemic. The need for expert and compassionate grief support has never been greater in our community and in our culture. Omega House is helping to meet these challenges. If you are interested in a unique giving opportunity, please consider donating to our Community Grief Support program.

Bobbi Bicigo, owner of Protea Floral Design, is also the heart and soul of
our Omega Blooms project that began last March. She volunteers her time by creating and delivering beautiful vases of flowers to every resident in the house twice a month free of charge. “Seeing their eyes light up as I walk in with a vase of flowers is more than fulfilling, and knowing that nature’s gifts are being given during a time when people need special care is so dear to my heart,” says Bobbi.
Volunteers and donors like Bobbi help create a rich and vibrant spirit at the house, and we are thankful for their work and their support of the hospice mission. For more information about Omega Blooms, contact Bobbi at [email protected] or906-275-9163.

Gerald G. VairoMeMORial Fund
Omega House of Houghton is proud to announce the creation of a new memorial fund honoring long time Copper Country resident and attorney Gerald G. Vairo. This fund supports end-of-life care for residents with limited resources providing “no cost care days” for Omega House residents who meet the new program’s income requirements. This fund reflects Jerry’s lifelong dedication to helping those in times of need regardless of their financial situation.
A generous start-up donation was made to create this memorial fund by Jerry’s longtime friend Jack Jiganti. They met for the first time when they both started at the University of Notre Dame in September of 1958 and over the next six years became close friends, finishing up their undergraduate and law degrees together. They remained close thoughout their lives.
John “Jack” Jiganti recounts his memory of Jerry:
Over the years after we graduated, Jerry visited my family and me in Chicago, and I made an annual
summer visit to the Copper Country where I was exposed to its beauty and challenges.
Jerry was an excellent athlete and a diligent student. Over the years we played handball, intermural softball and touch football. In all team sports he excelled and was captain; in handball he was the campus champ. He had a will to excel and win but he was respectful of the less talented athletes and offered nothing but praise and encouragement.
Jerry had a wonderful law career. He was an exceptional advocate and trusted counselor. His considerable legal ability was enriched by uncommon “common sense.”
From the earliest years it was clear Jerry had a special affection and fierce pride for the Copper Country and its residents. When I visited Jerry during the years we were practicing, I walked down the streets of Houghton or perhaps Laurium with him. He would be stopped by his clients and would always take the time to assure them that he would be at the upcoming board meeting or labor negotiation and continue on his way. However, (and it happened on many occasions), he would be stopped by an elderly lady who had a small matter pending. Jerry would stand there on the street corner and listen intently and take the time to answer her questions. He would also then inquire into the health and whereabouts of her family. After 15 or 20 minutes he would finish up and he would tell me that while her legal problem was minor or non-existent; she was lonely and needed to talk to someone. It was those acts of humanity that reflected the depth of character that Jerry possessed. Everyone mattered to him, especially those who were often overlooked and needed kindness.
When Jerry passed, and I reflected on his legacy, I thought that anything we did in his name had to be in the Copper Country. The legacy had to help those who could not fully help themselves. Next to his family, these were the people he cared most about. The Copper Country should be proud to have had such a fine son. It was an honor and a privilege to be Jerry’s friend.
John J. Jiganti

naming opportunitiesOmega House has naming opportunities available for donations small and large. This is a unique way to forever honor or remember a loved one. For gifts of $1000 an etched glass panel commemorative wall has been created that greets visitors as they enter the House.
