Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide 1 2016
ProceduresThe Mechanical Drive Order Survey includes en-
gines beginning at 0.5 MW. New orders are broken into reciprocating engine, gas turbine and steam turbine orders.
Fuel types are simplified to reflect only liquid ver-sus gaseous fuels. Liquid fuel, as reported in this survey, can be any form of diesel oil.
It is important to note that the data in this survey does not represent units shipped, but only the total orders received during calendar-year 2015.
An accompanying table shows the geographic breakdown we provide OEMs, highlighting the specif-ic countries within the reported geographic regions.
Every effort is made to ensure that this survey is as complete and comprehensive as possible and would not have the level of detail it contains with-out the generous contributions of the participating companies. An accompanying table identifies those companies that participated in the 2016 survey.
It is important to note, some units reported in the 2016 Mechanical Drive Order Survey did not have
ach year, Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide conducts three surveys designed to provided details on the markets of
larger reciprocating engines, steam turbines and gas turbines used in power generation, mechanical drive and marine propulsion applications. The Mechanical Drive Order Survey is devoted to engine orders for mechanical drive applications, including pumps, compressors, oil-exploration machinery, rail and other industrial applications.

Overview
This marks the 11th year for the Mechanical Drive Order Survey. Year-over-year com-parison shows a decline in total orders (all reported drivers types) from 2014 to 2015. This year’s survey catalogued 3371 orders (2015 data), a 37% drop compared to last year’s report (2014 data) which recorded 5361 units. Orders in 2014 were up 20% over 2013 and ended a two-year decline.
The accompanying graphs show the cyclical nature facing the mechanical drive ap-plications reporting into this survey.
The past year mirrored the previous in several large themes: Low oil prices, econom-ic challenges in China and political unrest in major oil and gas producing countries again tamped down demand. Effects of these challenges began to take their toll in the fourth quarter of 2014, with oil and gas majors announcing deep cuts that con-tinued through 2015.
There are a few positive signs in the market, however. Oil prices — which had been trading at their lowest levels in a decade — have regained about 70% from their Feb-ruary lows. However, today’s oil stocks will likely have a major dampening effect on price increases.

Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide 5 2016
Reciprocating EnginesThe number of reciprocating engines ordered in 2015 total
3205 units, a 35% decrease compared to last year’s survey. The majority of orders were divided between the output ranges of 0.50 to 1 MW (2016 units) and 1.01 to 2.00 MW (783 units).
Engine operating speeds above 1000 rpm accounted for 99% of the recip orders reported in the survey.
Diesel fuel once again dominated the fuel type, accounting for 89% of the reported orders.
North America once again claimed the top geographic desti-nation for reciprocating engines in 2014 (50%). North America’s shale development and infrastructure remains unrivaled, keep-ing it the top geographic destination for mechanical drive re-ciprocating engines for the foreseeable future.
Western Europe was the second geographic destination for recip engines within the mechanical drive segment, receiving 20% of 2015 orders. The Far East was next at 12%.
Gas Turbines
Gas turbine orders decreased 44% compared to the 2015 Me-chanical Drive Order Survey. Total orders reported in this survey equaled 92, compared with 167 in 2014.
Units with the output range of 30.01 to 60.00 MW received the most orders (58%), followed by units rated 20.01 to 30.00 MW (23%).
North America was the top geographic location for gas tur-bines in mechanical drive applications, receiving 38% of the
orders. The Middle East claimed the number two geographic location, accounting for 23% of the orders reported, followed by Eastern Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Indepen-dent States (CIS) (13%).
Steam Turbines
Steam turbine orders declined 75% compared to last year’s surveys. Total steam turbine units ordered in 2015 was 74, fall-ing mostly within the 10 to 30 MW output range (35%).
Condensing steam turbines saw the most demand, account-ing for 31% of the total steam turbines ordered.
Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS had the most orders (28%), fol-lowed by Southeast Asia & Australia (26%).
Annual Surveys
On behalf of Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide, thank you to all contributors for your continued participation in this annual survey process. It is our hope that these surveys combined will provide an accurate snapshot of the entire large engine landscape, with fine-tuned detail provided for three market segments through each individual report — power generation, mechanical drive and marine propul-sion. Electronic versions of past surveys are available at our website: www.dieselgasturbine.com. Questions, com-ments and suggestions should be directed to Jack Burke at: [email protected]. A
