What is our Mission? Mule Mania’s Mission is to provide a quality event for mule and
donkey lovers, that is educational to the public, safe and allows them to exhibit the great talents of their mules and donkeys. It is a show to allow people who have always wanted to compete, but never have, to give it a go! It is for our youth who truly are the future, to spend time with their family and animals and begin the love of riding.
What is the history of Mule Mania? Mule Mania started in Springdale, Washington in the late 1990’s. The Show grew so quickly it moved to Colville, Washington for 4 years. When Bobbi and Barney Chambers, of Coyote Mule Company, who ran the show in northern Washington moved to Cottonwood, Idaho the Show was no longer offered. In 2011 they started the show back up in Dayton, Washington with huge success. All who attended had a great time and so we are back by popular demand!
Mule Mania in Dayton Washington! Thanks to great sponsors and incredible volunteers Mule Mania is now offered in historic Dayton! Situated in the southeastern corner of Washington state, nestled in a charming valley of the Blue Moun-tains, our show has a new home at the beautiful Columbia County Fairgrounds. This will be our 8th Year!

A MULE is a cross between a donkey
stallion (a jack) and a horse (mare). A
female mule is a molly and a male mule
is a john. Hinnies are a cross between a
stallion horse bred to a female donkey
(a jennet).
Mules are sterile and cannot
breed. Mules have 63 chromosomes
and horses have 64. Even numbers of
chromosomes are required for repro-
duction. But male mules are usually
gelded because they still have plenty of
male hormones and can get a bit rowdy!
You’re not allowed to show intact mules
so it’s best to geld them.
On May 3, 2007 in Colorado, a mol-
ly mule, Kate, gave birth to a little male
equine. The likelihood of this occurring
is 1 in 1 million.
Mules have gained a reputation
for being stubborn, but this isn’t
true. Mule are very intelligent and have
lots of common sense. If they sense
they are in danger or if they are abused,
they may not obey their human handler
as a horse might. They rarely spook or
panic.
The world record for the fastest
Mule Marathon (26.2 mi.) is 1:27:37
set in Winnemucca, Nevada by Gayle
Jacklin, riding “Apache Ripper”.
America’s first president,
George Washington, was a
mule enthusiast. When the King of
Spain found out that President Wash-
ington loved mules, he shipped him a
Catelonian jack donkey named Royal
Gift in 1785. Royal Gift became the
foundation sire for most American
mules.
In the 1970’s and 80’s the US ex-
ported mules to the freedom fight-
ers in Afghanistan, who used them
to outmaneuver the Soviets troops in
the mountainous areas where Jeep,
tanks and even helicopters were inef-
fective.
The first depiction of a mule is
found on an Egyptian stone carving
dating back 3,000 yrs. This carving
shows the Egyptian goddess of
fertility riding a mule, suggesting
that the artist had a sense of humor.
Cloned Mules. The first ever success-
fully cloned Equine (includes horse,
donkeys and mules) is a Mule named
Idaho Gem. This achievement resulted
from a cooperative effort between the
University of Idaho and a private local
business man. Mr. Don Jacklin of
Rathdrum, Idaho. Idaho Gem is now 6
years old!
Mules are High Jumpers. They
don’t need a galloping approach like a
horse, but can jump tall fences from a
standstill. This talent was discovered
when raccoon hunters needed to get to
their other side of a wire fence. They
would place their coat on the fence,
walk their mule up to it, then the mule
would jump the fence from a standstill!

This 1905 Weber Wagon was restored to muse-um quality by owners John and Sandra Sullivan. It was on a ranch in West Texas until they pur-chased the remnants of the original wagon. Ranch Chuck wagon in Texas.

The Coyote Mule Co. wagon was fully restored by Les Myers in 2005. The wagon is a 1870 Thorn-hill, sold by Combs, Comer and Co., Celina, TN. The Coyote Mule Company bar horseshoe brand has been used by the Chambers family since 1880. Coyote Mule originally in Pagosa Springs, CO as a cattle and sheep ranch, this brand has been used by the family from Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Mon-tana and currently today in Idaho. Look for fine mules carrying this brand and you will know it is a Coyote Mule!
Krause Wagon

This wagon was loaded into a pickup in many pieces with broken down wheels, no tongue, and not much left of a farmer built box. It came from the front yard of a farm south of Walla Walla, WA and was probably not used on that farm. The maker is unknown as well as its history. There were few, if any, clues to help identify the origin. We began restoration and transformation to a chuck wagon in 2010. He has done a number of wagons, buggies, carts, trying to save a little of our history. The chuck wagon has been displayed at

RUSS ANDERSON’S EIGHT MULE
HITCH DEMONSTRATION - 1 pm
Lava Hot Springs, Idaho
In 1992 Russ started training two 3 year old Belgian
Draft mules, Molly and Megan who were from Ten-
nessee. He found that he truly enjoyed training driv-
ing mules and he has now expanded to an 8 mule
hitch. Molly and Megan are the leaders of the hitch
today with Penny and Ruby on point, Jackie and Jill on
swing and Teresa and Shelly being the wheel team.
All eight of the Molly mules are Belgian Draft Mules
from east of the Mississippi and range in ages from 11
to 20 years. The mules all range between 15.2 and 16
hands tall.
All of these animals are also “working” mules, pulling
harrowers, hay rakes and hay wagons during the hay
season back at the farm. Their harnesses were all
custom made by an Amish man and Russ does all his
own leather work.
Russ performs in Rodeos and Parades throughout the
Northwest. Russ and his mules won the title of World
Champion Team Driver and Reserve World Champion
Large Teams in 2010. Without the help and support
of his wife Wendy, son Trevor and other friends and
family, this hitch would not exist.
