Here’s one account. Numerous “frogand fish showers” have beenreported in Europe since ancienttimes. The stories include ludicrousnotions that creatures fall fromwhirlwinds or are vomited by birds. No clear conclusion can be drawn, but what does seem clear is thatand in the expression
refer not to mammalsbut to - specifically the catfishand the dogfish that especiallyheavy rain may bring down.
Proof of the catfish link was foundin a Singapore downpour when fiftyacres of land were found “coveredwith a local species of catfish.” Forthe dogfish, there is evidence in anold sailors’ belief that if dogfishwere sighted on a morning run, atorrent would soon come and theclouds of the storm wouldcontain dogfish. So graban umbrella when it startsto rain and have a verywonderful April!

I found my mother’s old Royal CrownCola bottle that had a stopper with a bunchof holes in it. I knew immediately what itwas, but my daughter had no idea. Shethought her grandmother had tried to makeit a salt shaker or something. I knew it asthe bottle that sat on the end of the ironingboard to “sprinkle clothes” because wedidn’t have steam irons.
