Motivator NOTE: Allow one to two minutes for lesson introduction. Explain theContemporary Operational Environment (COE) to include lessons learned.Ensure the students are aware of how it will affect them during their futureassignments.
The purpose of this lesson is to provide you with the skills and knowledge requiredto perform small emplacement excavator (SEE) operations that you, as a SEEoperator, must perform effectively in a combat and peacetime environment.
TerminalLearning
Objective
NOTE: Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements.
At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will:
Action: Excavate Fighting Positions Using a Small-Emplacement Excavator(SEE)
Conditions: At a training site, given a guided discussion on excavatingprocedures, a SEE, FM 5-434, TM 5-2420-224-10, LO 5-2420-224-12, a student guide, an equipment records folder and all personalprotective equipment.
Standards: Excavates one of the following excavations to the listedspecifications; a trench 15' long +/- 1', 2 foot wide +/- 6" and 2 footdeep +/- 1' using the extend and crowd method, a two Soldierfighting position 6' long +/- 6", 2 foot wide +/- 6", arm pit deep to the
tallest Soldier, a "L" and "T" fighting position 6' long +/- 1', 2'wide+/- 6" and arm pit deep to the tallest Soldier. All excavationsmust maintain a straight line. Performs a during operation PMCS,avoids contact with known underground hazards with no damage toequipment or personnel injury within 40 minutes.
SafetyRequirements
Review local training area SOP. Kevlars/hard hats must be worn at all times.Hearing protection must be worn while equipment is running. Eye protection, gloves, and proper foot protection must be worn when operating equipment. Usethree points of contact when mounting or dismounting equipment. Remove alljewelry. Use caution around moving parts.

RiskAssessmentLevel
Low - Instructors should complete a risk assessment before conducting trainingoperations, or logistical operations.
Environmental
Considerations
NOTE: It is the responsibility of all Soldiers and DA civilians to protect theenvironment from damage. Avoid unnecessary stripping of vegetation andwaterways. Control dust conditions and limit water erosion by dressing area at theend of each day. Explain the purpose of drip pans and their location under theequipment. Avoid unnecessary equipment usage and follow establishedprocedures for cleanup of fluid leaks. Restore site and surrounding areas as closeas possible to the original ecological condition.
Evaluation Performance evaluation, refer to the student evaluation plan in the student guide.
InstructionalLead-In
When used properly, this machine can excavate trenches, fighting positions(individual and crew served) and many other construction operations. As with allother construction equipment, the SEE can be dangerous if you are not paying
attention to what you are doing. Listen close and you will learn how to excavate atrench and several fighting positions.
SECTION III. PRESENTATION
1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Demonstrate Excavating With a SEE
Method of Instruction: DemonstrationInstructor to Student Ratio: 1:6
Time of Instruction: 1 hrMedia: Hands-on Instruction
A. Excavate with a SEE
NOTE: Ensure the front loader travel locks are disengaged and stowed.
1) Park the vehicle on level ground and lower the front loader to ground surface.
2) Bucket, Brakes, Buzzer, Power Take-Off (PTO) and Tires (BBBPT).
a) Depress the clutch pedal.
b) Shift the transmission into neutral.
c) Engage the PTO lever.
d) Release the clutch pedal.
3) Activate the hydraulic tool switch.
4) Open the implementation locks.
5) Release the backhoe travel lock and tilt the backhoe into the upright positionwith the tilt control lever. Close the lock latches with the lever and switch offHI/LO engine rpm switch.

6) Mount the vehicle and adjust the seat by pulling the adjustment lever out.Adjust forward or backward as desired.
7) Active the High/Low RPM switch.
8) Lower stabilizers with control levers until the stabilizers are extended andslightly lift the rear of the vehicle.
9) Look over left shoulder, ensure inclinometer is at 0 degrees
10) Press the swing control pedals, swing the backhoe to the center position,
11) Release the boom lock by:
a) Pushing the boom lock latch lever to the right and hold.
b) Push the boom control lever back until the boom lock is free.
c) Release the boom lock lever.
12) Dig with backhoe.
a) Extend the backhoe fully to 17' 8" and lower bucket to ground.
b) Swing boom to the left and right to create safety arc and return to centerposition.
c) Make marking cut by moving to boom and dipper to a 90 degree position.
d) Begin the dig cycle.
e) When the boom reaches 90 degrees, begin to curl the bucket.
f) If the bucket stalls, lift the boom slightly.
g) On completing the dig cycle, curl the bucket a 90 degree position, extendthe dipper, and swing to dump site with swing control pedals.
NOTE: Align the spoil with the stabilizers.
h) Move the dipper out and dump the bucket at same time.
i) After dumping the bucket, swing and lower the boom at the same time. When the bucket is over the excavation, stop the swing and lower theboom.
j) Repeat the dig cycle until the job is completed.
13) Back filling procedures
a) Position the SEE approximately 5 feet away from the outside rear of thematerial pile to be back filled.
b) Lower the bucket to the ground surface with the teeth 1/2 inch above theground.

NOTE: This step will leave the bucket partially filled with material so the bucketcan be utilized as a dozer blade.
c) Place the SEE transfer in low range (1st gear) and drive forward into thematerial and continue until material falls into trench/hole.
d) Raise the bucket approximately 18 from the ground, and dump material
into hole.
e) For the next pass, back up and position the SEE on the remainingmaterial to be back filled.
f) Drive forward continuing until the remaining material falls into thetrench/hole.
NOTE: If the spoil is higher than 2' or is dense (wet clay/mud) and/or wheelslippage becomes a problem, position 1/2 of the bucket on either side of thestockpile and take smaller portions until the hole/trench is back filled.
g) Continue with step 5 until trench/hole is filled.
h) Reposition SEE to either side of the stockpile and continue back fillinguntil complete.
i) Feather the spoil out at the end of each pass.
j) Dump bucket and back drag the work area, while keeping pressure onthe bucket and lifting slightly to feather material.
B. Excavate two Soldier fighting position with a SEE.
