What propaganda is being used during hate week?
Why is the propaganda being used? How is the use of propaganda used

Part 2 Chapter 5 – The Room and Winston and Julia
Look at the word choice Winston uses to describe the room. Why does he use those descriptions?
Winston lists all the possibilities for him and Julia. He then states that, “It was all nonsense…” (Orwell 152). Explain why he says that.
Part 2 Chapter 5 – Julia and Winston’s Beliefs
How are Julia’s beliefs about rebellion different than Winston’s?
What does Julia believe about the war? Why is the change in opponents during war
so important to Winston but not important for Julia?
Explain the meaning behind Winston thinking “History has stopped” (Orwell 155).
Why does Winston wish he would have kept the picture of the three men? What could the picture have done?
Part 2 Chapter 5 - Response Choose one of the following prompts to
respond to in your writer’s notebook Examine why the Party hangs the posters of
the Eurasian soldier. Explain Winston’s comment, “Dirty or clean,
the room was paradise.” Assess why Julia does not believe that
widespread opposition to the government exists.
Show what Winston means when he says, “Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
