Your job at the Mineworkers ProvidentFund puts you in charge of R28bn. Whatare your main tasks each day?

I am the chairperson of the audit and riskcommittee, which entails governance andrisk management of investment decisionsand financial strategy of the fund. I also hold

regular reporting meetings with manage-ment to ensure that finance and investmentstrategies are managed in line with stake-holder expectations.

How did you find yourself doing this job?Late in 2012, I got a call from a former col-

league that the fund was looking for a young,dynamic chairperson for the audit and riskcommittee. This was a big break for me asthe board trusted a 29-year-old to lead thecommittee. Moreover, I was appointed thedeputy chairperson of the board of trusteesat the same fund. We have since managed togrow assets under management from R16bnback in 2013 to a respectable R28bn.

What big mistake led to your biggestlesson during the course of your career?

While doing articles, I held back on mypotential due to low confidence, and I havesince learnt that you can never realise yourfull potential by playing small.

What did you want to be as a child?I have always wanted to be medical doc-

tor, but my late father disagreed and suggest-ed I become an accountant.

What do you find most meaningful aboutthe work you do?

Our main goal at Mineworkers ProvidentFund is to ensure that mineworkers and theirfamilies are well looked after after retire-ment. The governance role I play ensuresthat mineworkers can retire with dignity.

At ATNS, the CEO role has allowed me tohave a positive effect on the working envi-ronment of our employees, enabling them tocontinue providing safer skies for all our fly-ing public.

Another critical aspect, other than beingpart of an aviation collective that is geared tomake SA and the rest of the continent tech-nologically competitive, is to ensure thatATNS becomes a fully fledged caring and re-sponsible corporate citizen.

Our footprint is visible in all nineprovinces. We are taking aviation to our ruralcommunities, thereby ensuring we provideawareness and employment to those whohave no post-matric study opportunities.

● The soft skills that help you work well ina team, manage a project or meet yourdeadlines are usually not taught at collegeor university, yet they often make up alarger part of your working day than thehard technical skills you learnt.
