A TEMPORARY reprieve forBarrack Street GardaStation should be used as anopportunity to ensure apermanent garda presence ismaintained in the area, ameeting at UCC has beentold.

At the information evening lastweek — organised as part of theroll-out of plans to close four sta-tions in Cork — residents, com-munity leaders and gardaí heardplans to close the station at Eliza-beth Fort in January were stalledbut that it would be closed at somestage in 2013.

Superintendent Barry McPolin as-sured the audience that communitypolicing would not change followingthe eventual closure of the station,and claimed it would lead to moregardaí on the beat in the BarrackStreet district (which includes Ball-phehane, the Lough, Turner’s Crossand Greenmount).
