AC - V1 Monday, February 4 Barracka barracks is given a lifeline But station will still close By KERRIE DOWNEY A TEMPORARY reprieve for Barrack Street Garda Station should be used as an opportunity to ensure a permanent garda presence is maintained in the area, a meeting at UCC has been told. At the information evening last week — organised as part of the roll-out of plans to close four sta- tions in Cork residents, com- munity leaders and gardaí heard plans to close the station at Eliza- beth Fort in January were stalled but that it would be closed at some stage in 2013. Superintendent Barry McPolin as- sured the audience that community policing would not change following the eventual closure of the station, and claimed it would lead to more gardaí on the beat in the Barrack Street district (which includes Ball- phehane, the Lough, Turner’s Cross and Greenmount).
