Literature Circles are reading groups in which students have the opportunity to choose their own books and discuss them with their peers. The discussion is guided by roles or jobs that students select and complete for a specific part of the reading. These roles are chosen and completed ahead of time and they change with each section of the reading.
Discussion Director – The role of the discussion director is to lead and facilitate the group’s discussion. He or she is also responsible for generating discussion questions to begin the literature circle meetings.
Savvy Summarizer – The role of the savvy summarizer it to provide his or her group with a summary of the key ideas and important points from the reading.
Creative Connector – The role of the creative connector is to find connections between the book they are reading and the world around them.
Imaginative Illustrator – The role of the imaginative illustrator is to draw a scene from the reading. He or she must also explain the drawing and why they chose to illustrate it.
Literary Luminary – The role of the literary luminary is to highlight important or interesting passages from the text.
Word Wizard– The role of the word wizard is to pick out challenging or unknown words from the reading and then find the definitions.
Travel Tracker – The role of the travel tracker is to trace the setting of the action throughout the reading.
Character Captain – The role of the character captain is to describe and explain the traits of the character(s) in the text.
Figurative Language Finder – The role of the figurative language finder is to identify different types of figurative language throughout the reading.
Inquisitive Investigator - The role of the inquisitive investigator is to research any background information about either book itself or a topic within.
