SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL
About the One City Marathon
Launched in March 2015 as an initiative to
bring together the community and promote
healthy living, the Newport News One City
Marathon has expanded from a city-spe-
cific, to a regional, to a national event
attracting runners and families from around
the country. The One City Marathon is a
Boston Marathon qualifying course and
is quickly becoming known in the running
community as one of the best marathons in
the Mid-Atlantic region due to the flat and fast
course as well as the festive atmosphere. The
race is unique from other marathons, with the
point-to-point course spanning the length of
the city as well as being one of the few that
offers a four-person relay. The race also offers a
distance for everyone with the Anthem
Maritime 8K and a Nautical Mile Fun Run. In
celebration of its fifth anniversary (March 1-3,
2019) as well as an over welling demand, the
One City Marathon is adding the One City Half
Marathon in 2019.
In addition to the races, the One City
Marathon weekend has lots of other
activities for runners and community
members to enjoy. Activities include a Health
and Wellness Expo, Pasta Dinner, Family
Fun and Fit Day, Women’s Forum and much
more. Additionally, with the 2019 Marathon
weekend falling at the end of National
Heart Month and the beginning of Women’s
History Month, special events are being
added to promote heart health and women’s
health. Finally, the One City Marathon wil
continue its tradition of supporting
organizations in our community with
charitable fundraiser Operation One City.
Since 2015, the One City Marathon has raised
and donated more than $40,000 to area
charitable nonprofits. With so much going on,
it should be a great weekend!

HAMPTON ROADSA diverse community of more than 182,000
inhabitants, Newport News is the third
largest city in the Hampton Roads region
behind only Virginia Beach and Norfolk. In
a recent study, Newport News ranked sixth
nationally in “cities where millennials
are moving” with Norfolk and Virginia
Beach coming into ninth and tenth place
respectively. Home of music legend, Ella
Fitzgerald, Newport News was once known
as blue collar, military town with a rich his-
tory of shipbuilding. And while Newport
News Shipbuilding— our presenting spon-
sor—continues to build the world’s most
advanced ships for the United States Navy,
Newport News has become a diverse
community with a growing economy
supported by cutting edge technology.
Located on the along the scenic
shores of the James River and Hampton
Roads waterway, and just minutes
away from two of the most frequented
area destinations, Virginia Beach and
Williamsburg, Newport News is a the heart
of a metro region consisting of 1.7 million
residents.
Since its inception, the One City Marathon
has helped to strengthen the community,
expand the city’s healthy living initiative, and
introduce visitors to the many assets in the
Hampton Roads area. These assets include
the world’s largest naval base located on
the south side of the water as well as strong
military presence on the peninsula. In
addition to our armed forces, the college
students from across the nation are drawn
to the region, attending seven major area
universities, two of which are Histori-
cally Black Universities: Old Dominion
University, Norfolk State University, Hampton
University, Christopher Newport Univer-
sity, William and Mary University, Virginia
Wesleyan College, and Regent University.
Hampton Roads is also home to many of the
world’s biggest names in music and sports.
Some of those who call the area home include:
music mega stars Pharrell Williams and Missy
Elliott, Olympic gold medalist Gabrielle
Douglas, NBA legends Allen Iverson and
Alonzo Mourning, and a host of NFL players
including Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson
and Kam Chancellor, Washington Redskins’
DeAngelo Hall, Philadelphia Eagles’ Torrey
Smith, former player and sports commen-
tator Michael Vick, and NFL Hall of Famer
Bruce Smith.
