1 OVERVIEW

1.1 BackgroundThe WCDMA system is composed of radio access network UTRAN and core network CN. The base station (Node B) is an NE of the UTRAN system and located in the WCDMA system, as shown in Figure 1. It is connected with the RNC through the Iub interface and with the UE through the air interface Uu.

Based on the function realized, Node B can be divided into Base Band Unit and Radio Frequency Unit. Distributed Base Station is developed by this concept. This technical specification is about the Remote Radio Unit equipment (RRU) R8840 of ZTE Distributed Base Station.

Distributed Base Station equipment consists of Base Band Unit equipment (BBUB) and Remote Radio Unit equipment (RRU). It’s a kind of Base Station that can be installed flexibly and distrib-uted, as shown in figure 2.

Remote Radio Unit RRU can be connected to Base Band Unit BBUB by fiber, and BBUB is con-nected to RNC through Iub interface. Distributed Base Station is applicable to virous environmen-tal condition, and can greatly reduce operators’ CAPEX and OPEX.

1.2 Product ApplicationZTE Remote Radio Unit equipment R8840 is developed based on 3GPP R99/R4/R5 FDD proto-col. Together with ZTE baseband pool equipment, R8840 can constitute a full Node B Base Sta-tion. R8840 can also be connected to the ZTE Base Station to provide remote radio function.

ZTE R8840 is small, airproof, natural cooling radio unit that meet the requirement of outdoor in-stallation. It features small size, light weight, low power consumption and easy installation.

R8840 can be mounted on the tower, pole or wall that is close to the antenna, so that the radio sig -nal loss in the cable can be greatly reduced.

R8840 can at most support 4 carriers, 40W transmit power. It is applicable for different environ-ment condition from urban to suburb.

3G networking by ZTE distributed Base Station has the following advantages:

Reduce the operator's investment and OPEX: ZTE distributed Base Station adopts separate struc-ture. It uses small ground space and does not need a special equipment room. Therefore, the in-vestment into equipment room is decreased effectively. In addition, the power supply and trans-mission device for 2G network can be shared, which also saves the investment. ZTE RRU em-ploys DPD technology and achieves a high efficiency of 30%, leading in the industry. The very

low overall power consumption helps the operator reduce electricity expense greatly. Besides, the RRU is installed near the antenna, saving feeder cost and radio power loss.

Support flexible services upgrade: Using horizontal board plugging mechanism, ZTE Base Band Unit is easy to expand and maintain. It supports the all-around smooth upgrade from 2G to 3G in the service ability. Through software upgrading, it supports the all-around service upgrade from R99 to R6 and even to LTE. The transmitting power of ZTE RRU can be increased from 20W to 40W. ZTE RRU can satisfy all kinds of application scenarios by supporting 1 to 4 carriers.

2 R8840 SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION

2.1 R8840 Physical StructureThe appearance of ZXWR R8840 is shown as Figure 3.

Duplexer: Isolate and filter the transmitted signal and received signal, Integrate the function low-noise amplifier.

Transceiver: uplink and downlink frequency conversion of the radio signal; signal amplifying, filter, A/D, D/A;

3 R8840 FUNCTION

3.1 Configuration FunctionR8840 supports the following functions:

2 receive channels (receive diversity) and 1 transmit channel for each R8840

1 R8840 can supports 4 carriers at maximum

Support carrier expansion

Support 4 antenna receive diversity

Support 2 antenna transmit diversity

3.2 Networking FunctionIt supports star, chain or ring networking between R8840 and Base Band Unit BBU (such as ZXWR B09 or ZXWR BBUB). Cascade grade can reach up to 8 grades in chain networking. Fig-ure 2.5 shows the typical networking between BBU and R8840.

Other functions related to networking include:

Various R8840 connected to one BBU can constitute one cell.

The maximum fiber transmission distance support by one R8840 is 10km, and the maximum fiber transmission distance supported is 40km by cascade.

Backup function is supported for the links of R8840 interfaces when using ring networking.

3.3 Service Function Provide signal processing function. In uplink direction, radio signal is converted to base-

band signal; in downlink direction, baseband signal is converted to radio signal.

Provide Auto Gain Control controlling in uplink, stabilize the voltage of IQ signal in BBU-R8840 interface.

Provide I/Q signal frame assembling and disassembling function in BBU-R8840 interface.

Support RTWP reporting, reporting interval can be 100ms or 2ms.

Support transmit power reporting function for every carrier.

Support over loading protection function for Power Amplifier.

Support measurement, compensation and adjustment function for channel delay.

Supports transmit channel switching on/off function.

R8840 software fault in one R8840 will not affects the working of BBU and other R8840 connected to the abnormal R8840.

5 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

5.1 User InterfaceBBUB provides GUI interface for O&M.

Visualize the physical equipment in O&M system and simplify user input opera-tion

Output straight and understandable information; Generate respective graphic in-terface according to actual output

5.2 Configuration ManagementR8840 provides the following functions for configuration management:

Software upgrade – online upgrade is supported; service interruption is no more than 5 minutes and the other RRU’s connected to it, if RRU cascading is adopted, it will not be affected; automatic software roll back is supported in case of up-grade failure.

Local software launch is supported.

6 PHYSICAL INTERFACES

R8840 interfaces include interfaces with BBU, feeder and electrical tilt antenna, RS485 port, port for trunk node and power port.

6.1 Interface Between R8840 and BBUR8840 has 2 fiber ports, either 1.25Gbps or 2.5Gbps, for connection with BBU or other R8840’s serially connected to it.

Provide path for IQ data, clock synchronization, O&M messages

Transmission distance is not less than 10 km.

Failure optical module can be replaced at site.

6.2 Interface Between R8840 and FeederBetween R8840 and the feeder are two N-type connectors, of which one is for the main antenna and the other for diversity antenna. The interface resistance is 50Ω.

6.3 Interface Between R8840 and Electrical Tilt Antenna This interface is the path of power, O&M messages between R8840 and electrical tilt antenna.

6.4 RS485 PortOne RS485 port is provided for transparent information transmission of external environment monitoring and power equipment.

6.5 Ports for Input Trunk NodesR8840 supports 2 input trunk nodes which can be used for power alarming, switch between active and standby power module and alarming of lightning protection module.

6.6 Power PortR8840 provides power ports for 220V AC and -48V DC input.

7.3 R8840 Installation Requirements With maximum configuration of 3C1S, the whole rack is less than 16.5 kg (not including

The intensity of R8840 installation kits comply with GB4943;

Installation and maintenance are independent and will not affect each other when several R8840 are installed simultaneously

7.6 Grounding RequirementBBUB should have reliable grounding system and the grounding resistance should be no more than 10Ω.

BBUB should have reliable connection with grounding system. Grounding cable should be copper bundles with cross section not less than 16mm2.

Antirust and anticorrosion measures should be taken for connections with the grounding system.
