Plein Air painting by Zufar Bikbov

Zufar Bikbov had an interest in painting early on, influenced by his father, a well-respected specialist in engineering. His Dad’s dream to be an artist was not realized in post WWII Soviet Union during Stalin’s regime. After being accepted to Nicolai Fechin Art school in Kazan (Russia), his father switched to the school of Engineering and Architecture. “My dad never pushed me into an art career”, recalls Zufar, “however, albums of my father’s watercolors and a library of Russian Fine Art at our home, along with my father’s paints and brushes – this environment became fertile soil for the seed of my artistic talent to grow." Zufar began drawing and painting classes at age nine. At age eleven, he painted his first Plein air works; depicting nearby cottages and a horse and carriage. He discovered painting outdoors was more inspiring than working with a still-life or live model in the studio. He fell in love with landscape painting and started exploring the language of direct expression. When the time came to choose a college and profession, Zufar chose a career in medicine. While in medical school, and after a move to the United States, art continued to be a part of his self-actualization.

He was honored to participate in the exhibit “Doctors Paint” at the State Museum of Fine Arts in Kazan and later at Yale Medical School. Zufar style leans towards Russian and Soviet era impressionism. Influences include: Isaak Levitan, Valentin Serov, Konstantin Korovin, Willard L Metcalf, Joaquin Sorolla, W M Chase and Gustav Klimt. For him art is a continuous growth of experimentation. For over a decade, traveling and painting in the United States has changed his painting palette to a higher key. Zufar has won a number of national awards such as the “Artist Choice Awards, Plein Air” in Easton, Maryland. He also received a "Medal of Honor and Merit" from the Kent Art Association, where he is a member. At the Irvine Museum in Laguna Beach, California he received another award for the Plein Air national competition. Zufar has work in private collections in the UK, Spain, Russia and the United States – from New England to California. Zufar has a number of fans of his artwork and considers teaching art another significant point of his career.
